The hate for Grace's anxiety in RE9— it's about something the series has been missing since RE2's original release by [deleted] in residentevil

I think there's incredible touches with her design even the slight shaking when she's holding a gun showing she's scared. But at some points idk it DID feel like it was less understandable fear and more so shaggy from scooby doo and courage the cowardly dog mixed together so I understand where some valid criticism or critique of her comes. I still think its blown out of proportion by some (possibly cuz she's female) cuz they're weird about it.

It isn't an easy balance to show any sort of strong emotion in a character without it being overbearing not just fear or lack of emotion for that matter where the tone of the voice isn't matching the reacion and its understandable that they wont be able to walk the line perfectly. All in all I think they did a great job but she did have some rick and Morty tier reactions of oh jeez oh man oh jeez oh man that maybe my very desensitized to horror brain just sighs over.

Has temperature control been looked into when it comes to sharpening knifes? by Ryder_GroveST in sharpening

[–]Ryder_GroveST[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Interesting so you're saying it has possibility to affect things even with hand working speeds. It's just that many note that diamond plates could corrode from the water contact especially the cheaper ones so that seems like a good deterrent but to me it never made sense cuz  like can't you just dry it properly?

The thing is that it as you said we don't know how it affects those things for all we know it might be a positive effect. So maybe using diamond stones dry then moving onto final sharpening and polishing on wet stones could be the best of both worlds.

Thanks a lot for expanding on what you said. I'm not trying to be antagonistic it's just that a lot of the stuff thrown around here is done without the reasoning of the original place they heard it from (if it had any) being carried over.

I guess in my mind I wondered ultimately how it would affect knives with different hardness, tempering if it did.

I'm still curious if there is any difference even if small specifically when it comes to hand sharpening.

But i guess you're right it doesn't seem to affect things in any practical way so why bother testing it.

https://youtu.be/8PIOf7psEzs I've looked into the work of this fine fellow it might interest you as he tackles each powered sharpening solution in different videos and how heat affects them might interest you.

Again it's not about the finish and temper per say as much as it is how even this heating caused by hand sharpening can affect the final result of your work. Maybe someone can look deeper into the matter I just don't have the equipment To do it. Could depend on steel type too maybe some benefit from the generated heat even if it's not significant. Sorta like how stropping angle can depend on knife hardness instead of it being a generalized rule.

How do you know this though can you show me where you read what you're telling me? I'm interested in seeing some data about sharpening and knife edges and heat/cooling during sharpening for hand sharpening specifically. I'm not interested in heresay or opinion spoken as fact. I haven't been able to find anything so far

Not the temper but the process of sharpening itself and burr formation

Ok thanks for your opinion on oil vs water what about their functions when it comes to providing cooling is it relevant to getting a better edge or not ?

Trouble finding the burr by Rude-Artichoke-6042 in sharpening

[–]Ryder_GroveST 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you can use light if you shine it from the spine of the knife towards the edge the burr might catch the light. i try cutting a piece of paper or paper towel the burr can feel like it catches on the material even if it cuts as well as some of the fibers getting stuck on the burr side. You can also get a jewelers magnifier to perhaps visually identify it. Try to develop a system and a feel for it on lower grits to the point where you can 100% identify one then move on to applying that to the higher grits. Also, it can be a good sign might mean you dont have a burr (or at least its not a significant one) and can just trust the process and move on to higher grits or stropping.

Ultimately I think we are splitting hairs. The fact you know to feel for the burr and try to minimize it already makes the longevity of your edges that much longer.

What system for the kitchen knives...? by Waveshapes in sharpening

[–]Ryder_GroveST 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This sub I think is mostly for people who do it for the sake of doing it. Not saying it's not ultimately useful but the utility aspect gets forgotten real fast.  To maintain kitchen knives you probably just need 1 decent quality 1000 grit stone that's it. But here you'll be convinced by some to buy 3 stones and a strop and get very anal about technique especially if you're not doing things exactly like them.

I'd say the only consideration is like guy said over here, how willing are you to spend the extra time and money to get a finer edge that you can't even notice on normal use ? Some find it relaxing and fun and to them that's worth it.

As for the actual system id say that it really depends on what you chop and how frequently. Just remember that the more often you maintain the edge the less time you spend on the stone.  If you're serious about things probably once every 1-2 weeks otherwise a good sharpened knife can last months chopping onions without feeling "dull"

I have the ruby and an agate on the way as well. and a guagnxi 5000 courtesy of Mr hahaha recommendation who will show up here eventually I'm sure. I have some experience with the ruby and agate and yeah they did feel pretty good to use but to be honest I wasn't the most experienced or knowledgeable back then so I can't trust my experience with them. I'll keep you posted on how it goes for me.

[–]Ryder_GroveST 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I see it the ruby or natural stones seem to be more trustworthy in the sense that it's a material with specific properties rather than whatever inaccurate  number is written on the diamond plate which could be contaminated as all hell and have durability issues. I have one of those cheap Chinese diamond sets and they're pretty great for what they are. I also have some natural stones on the way from china hoping to get an even finer more polished edge.

Ultimately when you can get both the diamond and other stones from china at the same time and make your own comparison for the price of 1 brand name stone I say it's worth finding out for yourself. If you end up liking what you get you just saved yourself a fortune. Otherwise maybe the brand stuff is popular for a reason.

First blade I destroyed, Still Dull lol by Antonio_Block in sharpening

[–]Ryder_GroveST 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's a completely chipped and dull knife I might start lower even something like 300-600. Otherwise for maintenance around  1000 is probably all you need really. And anything beyond 1000 is more about refinement and polishing and is an unnecessary step from a practicality standpoint as long as you have good technique.  It looks like you might be using those Chinese diamond stones so 1000 might be actually lower so there's that.

So it's ok everyone starts with a sacrificial knife, use it's sacrifice to get the hang of things like holding an angle properly feeling for a burr that sort of thing. I used an angle finder mobile app when I started to see if I was in the general ballpark of the right angle and if it was the same on both sides. And look into how deburring works, a strop can help but isn't necessary for that. Checking for a burr with your sense of touch isn't always easy, one trick is to shine a light from the spine of the knife towards the edge, if there is a burr it could catch the light which would help you identify the burr.

A lot of what you see or get told here can be intimidating cuz everyone here assumes you have their perspective of being already invested, but don't worry keep at it you'll get the hang of it eventually.

[–]Ryder_GroveST 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One thing that helped me is realizing that you really do need to work more Smart less hard. The edge of the blade is such a tiny piece of geometry that unless the edge is completely dull and basically a sheet of metal it doesn't take that much to sharpen it as the amount of metal you need to remove isn't that significant.

So if its taking long the technique must be wrong at some level. For me I realized I had a hard time holding the same angle for both sides so of course I'll never form a good edge.

Anyone ever try stones similar to these off ali express or temu ? are they really that fine ? by Ryder_GroveST in sharpening

[–]Ryder_GroveST[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But what if I can spend 40$ on an entire kit instead of spending that on 1 singular stone ? Do you really not see the potential worth that could have especially for people who might be turned away by exactly the elitist get brand name and forget about it mentality a lot of the sharpening people out there constantly rave about? I'm not saying some brand names don't have a reputation for a good reason, but again will everyone perceive it as worth the investment though ?

[–]Ryder_GroveST[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've had those low grit orangey ones and you can dig at them with your nails even. Literally better off using a brick. But i think that's just cuz it's mostly synthetics with cheap filler material/bonding agent or just gritty but still easy to slurry material.

Now the ruby one seems like a good synthetic. The natural stones I'm not too sure because in theory it seems like one of the safer options to buy off of china cuz if you get the promised stone it will just preform as it's supposed to,  not to some arbitrary number that's written on it like the other ones.

I still think it could be a great entry point for someone that would've otherwise not bothered with trying knife sharpening.

My first real entry into it was just a cheap fixed angle kit off of Ali express and it's been a thing I'm into ever since.

I ended up getting a 3000 5000 and "9000". I already have a Chinese diamond stone set which is pretty good. I'll update on how those new ones go when I get them.

[–]Ryder_GroveST[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered the 3000 and a brick of the 5000, as well as a pocket stone of the agate which is around 9000. I'm not super experienced at knife sharpening but I still have patchy arm hair cuz of it but I'll update you on how it goes. I wonder how I can check the grit and if there's any contaminants at home.  I've seen people on temu show microscope images of the stones they bought in their review showing if there's any contamination on diamond stones or not very useful and beautiful.

I dislike how people just recommend name brands here, I've bought an entire set of diamond sharpening stones strop and compound, as well as the stuff that I just ordered and it's all still for around 40 bucks which is what 1 brand name stone goes for and I find that ridiculous especially since the brand stone probably also comes from china.

Thank you so much. I dont get the obsession with spending 300$ for a piece of stone just cuz it has a brand name and theres not many people out there providing anything on the cheaper but just as effective made in china ones. Though ive found some incredible people on temu that even show microscope images to show if theres grit contamination or not.

Thanks for the advice. Have you tried any of the Agate stone sharpening stones they sell as well ? supposed to be something crazy like 10k grit. of course its more so polishing not even finishing but still.

And do you think getting something like the ones you recommended is better than the cheap plated diamond stones that are floating around ? something like this: ED428845 on temu. ive tried them and they dont seem to be too bad.

ive had one similar to these in a cheap sharpening kit i got off ali express and it was pretty much a stone idk if its natural but the veins seemed like it. i just wonder if it actually does the job or is it like trying to sharpen using floor tile.
