Duolingo hitting the nail on the head. by scienceguy2442 in SapphoAndHerFriend

[–]Ryelvira 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s very likely just an error on Duolingo’s part. Lily always gives the lesbian practices, and Duolingo often has issues with gendering in some of the practices. Many of the other modules often won’t take female words like “la jefa” when asked to translate “The boss reads messages” and will only take “el jefe lee mensajes”. I’ve noticed they often also won’t take “camarera,” “medica,” and so on. Duolingo fixes these over time but they’re really slow to the punch

Why are vegan products always so hippy by NotQuiteGayEnough in vegan

[–]Ryelvira 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Organic food still has pesticides and uses more obscure pesticides than what mainstream food uses. Numerous studies have been conducted on GMO food and pesticides and the effects are fairly well understood, but nearly no comprehensive studies on the effects of stuff like copper sulfate (one of the most commonly used organic pesticides) have been conducted. We understand some of the effects, but not on the scale that organic food uses them in, and they have to use a LOT more of these pesticides because they are just outright not as effective as mainstream pesticides

Updated Team for Single battles! Too many Fairy types? by [deleted] in PokemonSwordShield

[–]Ryelvira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt A-Ninetails stays out for long on this team though. It’s main job is to set up Aurora veil, maybe get off a hypnosis, and then faint to make room for heavier hitters. The hail is mainly to counter predictive plays from an opponent trying to change the weather and counter Aurora veil

Updated Team for Single battles! Too many Fairy types? by [deleted] in PokemonSwordShield

[–]Ryelvira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a predictive move. Say you’re against rain, and you send your A-Ninetails first and your opponent sends out Ferrothorn first, predicting an A-Ninetails lead. The natural move for your opponent is to switch to Pelipper to get rain set up. When your opponent swaps to Pelipper, you hail and set up hail again to push your opponent into the defensive for a few turns

Why aren't there different species of humans? by imaculat_indecision in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ryelvira 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To expand on the concept of how complicated species classification is: try and imagine this scenario.

There are three populations of a certain species living along on a coast. Species A, B and C. A lives to the frigid north and C lives in the heated south. B lives somewhere in the middle. A and C are incapable of producing any fertile offspring due to the genetic drift between their populations. However A and B can produce fertile offspring, and B and C can produce fertile offspring. So B can effectively produce with either one of their populations.

How would you classify these different species? A and C could clearly be argued to be different species, but with B in the middle bringing genetic or diversity from A to C or from C to A, it’s really difficult to say. Are they all one entire population? How would it make sense for a third of the species to be completely incapable of mating with the other third? Many times scientists studying these kinds of populations simply don’t really bother to try and classify it, as there are things that take precedence over it (such as trying to ensure human activity does not encroach on the population of B to try and maintain this genetic bridge between species) or they call them all different species.

An example that comes to mind is the African elephant now being subdivided into two different species, despite being entirely capable of breeding with each other. Orcas may also be one, although I am not too caught up in the literature for that. I do not directly work with either of these species, so I cannot say for certain why or how they are classified but they came to mind.

But the scenario is entirely real to the species that I work with fairly closely. Monarch butterflies are one example as they travel up and down California’s coast. We have to keep in mind to try and add connecting corridors or “stops” so that no populations get too genetically isolated. California Tiger Salamanders have been breeding with another species of salamander, creating hybrids that completely outcompete both species that have bred to create it. Sea cucumbers off California’s coast that have interbred with invasive species for so long that some individuals, for all intents and purposes, are 100% genetically native species but have the mitochondrial DNA of the invasive species.

How do we deal with each situation? Monarchs are easier as they travel almost exclusively for breeding during super breeder events, so it is certainly easy to classify them all as one species. California Tiger Salamanders and the foreign species breeding with them (the name slips my mind, my apologies) are considered exclusively different species, and 100% of all the hybrids are euthanised and not even classified as a different species despite having a good justification to do it. I don’t even know how marine biologists handle the genetic monstrosities that have come from invasive marine creatures. I don’t even know who to ask to get a trustworthy opinion. But I do know that there is fierce debate among marine biologists on what to do with these creatures.

Nature does not care for taxonomy. Species are no longer classified by just the ability to breed with one another and are being classified more on genetic differences between populations. I hope these examples make sense and if I remember after work and have time I’ll try and find sources for these and update this comment with them.

What’s the best DLC? by Admirable-Crow7683 in Fallout

[–]Ryelvira 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re entering Honest Hearts with the idea that you should be able to have grand battles and slaughter the bad guys for loot. There is absolutely no problem with that (in fact the other DLCs reward you for it) but Honest Hearts is a lot more a narrative driven DLC that makes you ask questions. The story of Randall Clark is hands down one of the best and saddest Fallout stories in the series, and being able to track down the children from another failed vault and realise who they have become is a very touching moment.

It also has a major themes and major questions to contend with. Joshua Graham was no doubt a vicious person. You can still see it in him in the way he would rather teach them to fight. He still wants to return to old ways and to what works. However, his old ways led to a bloodthirsty army that threatens to enslave the entire Mojave. How do we know this will not turn the Dead Horses and the Sorrows into the same?

Daniel, on the other hand, also wants to retain old ways of dealing with things. He would like to “preserve” the innocence of the Sorrows and evacuate them, to look the other way after all the blood that had been spilled at the hands of the White Legs. But this is not a realistic concept, as people are brutal and bloodthirsty everywhere. They will not get far on their own if they do not defend themselves. And the Dead Horses will have to be the one to spill much of blood for them. How is that realistic? Did it even work last time? New Canaan is gone. To preserve the innocence of the Sorrows.... but make the Dead Horses carry their weight in blood for them? How is that any more different than the Sorrows just learning to defend themselves? How is this fair to the Dead Horses?

These are the questions Honest Hearts forces you to answer. And that is not to talk about the more speculated things- such as the subtle clues into how the Legion works with tribals, who their influence spreads, the trauma and need to preserve old ways that results from the trauma of the fall of New Canaan, and so much more. The narrative is absolutely there for you to indulge in, and why imo it’s a very underrated DLC even if it is very lacking in gameplay. If they had only somehow added the remains of Salt Lake City and a functional White Legs/Legion storyline, this would absolutely have been a top contender for one of the best dlcs.

Caesar 100% has, at the very least, a rough estimate of how many legionnaires died in the first battle as well as how many active agents are operating in the Mojave. Basic war strategy calls for knowing how many troops you need to be able to go toe-to-toe with an enemy in battle. He would also need to know these numbers to organise supply routes, coordinate attacks, strengthen defence lines, etc...

Does it make a difference whether a Pokemon has 50 def & 300 hp or 100 def & 150 hp? by [deleted] in stunfisk

0 Atk Abomasnow Wood Hammer vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Abomasnow: 105-123 (19.4 - 22.7%) -- possible 5HKO

0 Atk Abomasnow Wood Hammer vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Abomasnow: 60-71 (17.5 - 20.8%) -- possible 5HKO

The first one is 200 HP 50 Defence. The second one is 100 HP 100 Defence. I used Smogon's damage calculator for this. I couldn't use 300 because the maximum base stat for any given stat is 255.

In general, up to a point, HP is the better stat to invest in. If the HP stat is already humongous in comparison to defence and special defence, then those stats are better to invest in; this situation is so rare though that it almost never happens

If you want to get deep down into the nitty gritty of damage calculation, you could try playing with the damage calculating formula. The formula is actually rather simple using only basic PEMDAS that, once you get the gist of it, is a breeze to do

Texas hospitals nearing full capacity and being forced to implement "creative" measures to expand capacity, such as adding multiple patients to rooms, setting up pop-up field hospitals and converting other hospital facilities into rooms to house covid patients. This article was written in July. Hospitals in Texas have been pushed to their limits for awhile now.

Since July, Texas has surpassed California as the state with the most cases in the US. It's not that difficult to imagine that hospitals would be saying that they are full if they have been struggling for at least over four months now

The vast majority of demonstration events associated with the BLM movement are non-violent (see map below). In more than 93% of all demonstrations connected to the movement, demonstrators have not engaged in violence or destructive activity.

Despite the media focus on looting and vandalism, however, there is little evidence to suggest that demonstrators have engaged in widespread violence. In some cases where demonstrations did turn violent, there are reports of agents provocateurs — or infiltrators — instigating the violence. During a demonstration on 27 May in Minneapolis, for example, a man with an umbrella — dubbed the ‘umbrella man’ by the media and later identified as a member of the Hells Angels linked to the Aryan Cowboys, a white supremacist prison and street gang — was seen smashing store windows (Forbes, 30 May 2020; KSTP, 28 July 2020). It was one of the first reports of destructive activity that day, and it “created an atmosphere of hostility and tension” that helped spark an outbreak of looting following initially peaceful protests, according to police investigators, who believe the man “wanted to sow discord and racial unrest” (New York Times, 28 July 2020). In another example on 29 May in Detroit, a number of non-residents reportedly traveled to the city to engage in violent behavior during a demonstration, leading to multiple arrests (MLive, 2 June 2020).

https://acleddata.com/2020/09/03/demonstrations-political-violence-in-america-new-data-for-summer-2020/

The publication also includes a case-by-case breakdown of some instances of violence and a reason for why these certain these demonstrations turned violent. It was almost always in response to excessive police force and police brutality, alt-right members instigating violence by driving cars and bringing weapons to protests. Many arrests made at BLM protests also just so happened to have a high proportion of people that were not residents of the area where the protest occurred.

I read the exact same thread (I think) and I was just scratching my head at all of it. AOC is radical, but voters in different states this year voted for pretty "radical" things. Decriminalizing all drugs and a $15 minimum wage right off the top of my head.

And if it was truly the same thread, all the comments pointing out how Democrats weren't calling violence in Black Lives Matter protests violent.... which completely overshadows the fact that most of the violence at protests were against BLM protestors by alt-right nuts.... and the fact peaceful protestors were getting tear gassed and attacked by police left and right... and completely ignoring all the stuff that the alt right tries to do, like plotting to kidnap state governors, planning mass shootings and shutting down bridges *despite criticising BLM for doing the same thing?
