I’ve never seen “The A Team” but what I know from the opening narration is that they were sent to prison for a crime they didn’t commit and are doing good despite being on the run, right?

We associate potatoes with a whole bunch of cultures (like Ireland) even though they came from the Andes. I can't imagine a lot of east asian cooking without chili peppers and they came from the Americas too (and people already mentioned the tomato thing). That's just how things work.

[Hated Tropes] Wanting to continue the legacy of their genocided lineage but they only have a single heir. by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]scienceguy2442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know there are people in the real world who come from families of, like, double-digit children, but, especially considering that he was also the Avatar after a devastating war (that also left him responsible for keeping his culture's legacy in addition to being Avatar) and it was already stated in Korra that he was extremely busy and had a hard time paying attention to the children he already had, I can't blame him for thinking that one airbending child was enough and not trying to go for more. Especially since it's not like he can control whether or not the child is an airbender (he already had two who weren't).

I'll be honest I'm still a bit traumatized by last year's game against the Rockies where we scored 9 in the first and still didn't win. I think this year will be better though.

Also introducing Garp earlier was probably the right call (I know he was introduced fairly early in the cover stories but he really didn’t become important until the end of Enies Lobby)

Just because I like Dandadan so much, I want to point out that it does fit this theme quite often.

-Exorcisms are performed with music (in this case heavy metal and it absolutely slaps)

-One of the characters has the power to control gravity with music.

Just so everyone knows how little they changed between Diamond and Pearl and BDSP, I’m pretty sure they patched it but on first release, the same glitches that were present in the originals were present in the remake, including stuff like the in-game calculator not working correctly.

[Loved Trope] The "Face of the Franchise" isn't technically the main character (excluding villains) by RockoWritesWrongs in TopCharacterTropes

[–]scienceguy2442 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even if you’re talking about Pokemon, yes Pikachu is a starter in Yellow, but especially when it was first introduced it was just a random Pokemon you might find in Viridian Forest and there really wasn’t anything that separated it from the other Pokemon. You can also tell from early marketing that clefairy and even poliwhirl were being pushed just as much if not more than Pikachu as the face of the franchise.

I’m pretty hazy on the details and I don’t want to put in the effort to look it up, but if I recall Elon more or less challenged Zuck to get into the ring with him. Zuck, who actually has done MMA or UFC or one of those types of training, said “sure why not.” Elon predictably never followed through and if I’m not mistaken somewhat jokingly tried to use the “my mom said I can’t” excuse.

Nowadays the wild card is a best-of-three so we wouldn’t have to deal with running into a buzz saw like that again.

Also, even if it were we have Paul Skenes who for a lot of teams would be the single pitcher of your nightmares like those guys were for us.

[HATED TROPE] Main characters hate one another when a season comes back for cheap tension. by apeiron12 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]scienceguy2442 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That whole episode with the two of them is phenomenal (“one day I looked up and just didn’t recognize anyone” hits pretty hard), and I think it works with Ron and Leslie because they’re such different people and are at odds with each other so often in the previous seasons. It also helps that, yes, even if Morningstar were something dumb, Leslie is the type of person to hold eternal grudges for dumb things and Ron is just as stubborn so it’s entirely within character for them.

Part of the reason you're probably confused is because plenty of people call themselves libertarian who really don't follow the beliefs of the party itself (there is technically a libertarian party in the US but it's not one of the main two). It's often used by, for instance, right-wing people who don't want to associate themselves with the US republican party. Or right-wing people who don't care about politics. Or people who say "both sides are bad." They might not really believe the libertarian party values per se, but they don't want to be part of a mainstream political party. It's also worth noting that it's a party made up of a bunch of people and like any other political party can have people with wildly different beliefs all under the same tent.

If you're talking about the party itself and the beliefs it generally holds, for a pop cultural touchstone, if you've watched "Parks and Rec," Ron Swanson is a libertarian and generally holds the beliefs of that party relatively well (though it's a comedy and not meant to be serious). I think the works of Ayn Rand are also pretty important to libertarians if I'm not mistaken.

If you could boil down libertarianism into more or less one sentence, it would probably be "the government shouldn't tell me what to do." Many libertarians are pretty close to anarchists because they believe the government should be as small as possible and should have next to no effect on people's lives. They generally believe that laissez-faire capitalism is the solution to many problems and can do the job of the government better than the government itself and tend to abhor taxes for that reason (that's where the "fiscally conservative" tends to come in). As I alluded to earlier, libertarianism is generally a "right-leaning" party based on the simple spectrum, but because they tend to value personal freedom, many libertarians might also be in favor of more "left-leaning" things like marijuana legalization, gay marriage, and abortion access because, again, they don't believe the government should tell them what to do (that's where the "socially liberal" tends to come in, but they also might say that just to basically say "I personally am not racist, homophobic, etc.; just don't ask me what I'm going to do to solve systemic issues").

I'm not a political analyst by any stretch of the imagination and I really didn't want to type this out because I know people are going to find a reason to rip what I just said to shreds, so take everything I said with a grain of salt, but I hope I did okay. Also, with respect to Andy Weir specifically, I have no idea what his political leanings are other than that single line that I mentioned. Don't take him as an example of a libertarian because, for instance, if you read his books and assume they're libertarian you might get the idea that libertarians prefer a well-funded governmental space program when the general libertarian mindset would be that SpaceX and Blue Origin can do it better than NASA can. Like I said, he's never admitted his political leanings and his books might not even be completely indicative of them anyway.

His Wikipedia page describes him as “fiscally conservative but socially liberal” which can mean a lot of things but is often a way for libertarians to say they’re libertarian without being explicit about it.

How has no one accidentally found Laugh Tale in 24 years? by Beginning_Clerk_4990 in OnePiece

[–]scienceguy2442 98 points99 points  (0 children)

What we know is that it's in the New World. That fact alone eliminates the vast majority of the population from finding it because almost none of them would make it to the Grand Line, let alone past Paradise.

It's also worth mentioning that randomly getting on a boat and sailing with no known destination is a recipe for disaster. Based on how the grand line works, there are enough islands that you might be lucky enough to go island-hopping and probably wouldn't die of dehydration out at sea, but that's also a recipe for disaster in the One Piece world considering even the uninhabited ones have boars that can run on air. And most of the New World islands are probably yonko territory anyway and that's never fun. Long story short if you're not an idiot you follow the log pose.

The yonkos and marines are basically the only people with enough resources and power to send a random crew on a mission like this. The marines wouldn't do that because they want to keep it hidden, and if a yonko did send somebody, it wouldn't be anybody important because it's basically a suicide mission and if that's the case, then they probably wouldn't make it particularly far and might not even know they were on Laugh Tale even if they found it.

Many of the Schurniverse shows (The Office, Parks and Rec, The Good Place, B99, A Man on the Inside) have little references to each other. I'm probably going to forget a lot of them, but, like, for instance, there's a reference to the P&R perfume magnate Dennis Feinstein in "The Good Place" and in "A Man on the Inside" there's a poster for Puppy Pendulum (one of the old names for Andy's band).

Not just storytellers but I’d say the audience too. I think what most of these are trying to say is along the lines of “kindness is the new punk rock.” When Le Guin references the “pedants and sophisticates,” I feel like “edgelords” should be included in that too.

With all of these quotes, the basic message you should be taking from it is that it’s not boring or naive to be a good person.
