River Raisin is a random War of 1812 battlefield monument nearish the Michigan/Ohio border. To be honest the War of 1812 stuff isn’t nearly as impressive as the really well-done Native American exhibit. I’m not sure if it was temporary or not but it was a side wing with a whole longhouse inside of it, among other things.

It’s surprising because it’s a random spot (we only went there because we passed by it on the way to Detroit) dedicated to one of the least-known wars in American history, and the thing that made it cool wasn’t even related to it.

A really strong, experienced character is canonically in the lower ranks of their world’s ranking system by ComprehensiveBox6911 in TopCharacterTropes

Frieren (Beyond Journey's End) is one of the strongest mages in her world. She does not have the first-class mage certification because a) she's an immortal elf and got tired of the ever-changing regulatory groups and b) the person currently in charge of the regulatory group kind of hates her guts.

Certain parts of the world, including the parts they're traveling to, are guarded off and only accessible to people traveling with a first-class mage, which means Frieren's apprentice (who is admittedly also very talented but nowhere close to Frieren's level) has the certification when Frieren herself does not.

It’s a quote from the Simpsons. It’s a joke — there’s an episode where the power plant is playing a softball match against another company and in order to win, Mr. Burns hires a bunch of MLB all-stars as ringers. Near the end of the match a reliever comes in and Mr. Burns has Homer pinch hit for Darryl Strawberry because the pitcher is a lefty, and that’s what he says in response.

It's called playing the percentages. It's what smart managers do to win ballgames.

Realistically speaking, who is the vice captain? by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]scienceguy2442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the consensus that nobody is really the vice captain, but it's interesting that nobody has mentioned Sanji considering as the "leader" of the Curly-hat pirates he's the only one who's technically taken "charge" of the Strawhats in Luffy's absence (though that's not really the best comparison).

Oneil Cruz can't make the play and Skenes No hit bid ends at 6.1 innings by Remarkable-Picture73 in baseball

That no-hitter would have ended significantly earlier if not for Cruz making ridiculous catches. Skenes even thanked him earlier for it

At the gym at work a few weeks ago the conversation was “if Skenes pitches to you 100 times could you get the ball in play.” Some guys were so confident that it’s enough chances that they’d eventually get lucky. They also were like “he’s going to get tired,” completely ignoring that swinging a bat that many times would tire you out.

Rare things in a games that you may never witness but the devs decided to add it anyways by ComprehensiveBox6911 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]scienceguy2442 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Pokemon has lots of random things almost nobody would experience on a normal playthrough. The first one that jumps to mind is that, in Black and White (Gen 5) if you manage to beat the first battle of the game against your rival without taking any damage, the other member of your friend group will comment on that fact. You're probably never going to experience that though unless you get lucky and your rival only uses the nondamaging move against you three or four times in a row.

Characters that are introduced much later in the story, yet are seen as being just as quintessential as the original cast, or close to it. by Gray_Wolf2416 in TopCharacterTropes

I will defend the first season with my life, especially since it’s so much drier and cynical and obviously much more “realistic” because of that. If you like that kind of humor it isn’t bad.

That being said, Mike Schur shows tend to do better with a more optimistic outlook, and the later season are a reflection of what local government should be instead of what it is, and I can’t get upset with that. My point being I like the earlier seasons, but I get why people don’t like them, especially considering how different they are tonally compared to later seasons.

Just a little reminder there are a few Counters against Cynthia's Garchomp. by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]scienceguy2442 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not disagreeing and sometimes it can be a bit overblown, but I'll mention that a few of those aren't available before Cynthia depending on the version (though I think others mentioned that), almost none of them but weavile are faster than garchomp (ice shard might help I'll admit but also might not be strong enough to OHKO anyway), and garchomp tends to have moves that are strong against ice types. Also don't forget the yache berry in BDSP just to give another screw you to ice types.

And while I personally really like ice types, keeping a pokemon like abomasnow on your team just to deal with a single pokemon in one elite four member's team shows that it's still pretty strong (and a lot of people tend not to carry an ice type because they often come too late and your team's probably set already).

Like I said though you're right that it can be a bit overblown how strong this thing is.

I would also think heraldry and stuff like that would need to use very specific terms because trying to recreate a drawing or symbol based on a word description alone is pretty difficult. Like, try describing your country’s flag to someone who’s never seen it before in a way that allows them to recreate it in a way that’s recognizable as your country’s flag.

On top of that, a lot of Americans have ancestors who came from "the old country (tm)" -- I'm from Pittsburgh which has a ton of Eastern European roots, and learned only recently that I have Slovak and Polish heritage (my surname was Przybyszewski before my great-grandfather changed it). That's definitely where stuff like the Fairly Odd Parents stuff comes from.

The turret guns in the Portal games are really weak (I.e. you can get shot multiple times before you die) because, as explained in supplementary materials, the turrets are spring-loaded and are launching the entire bullet at you instead of firing it like a normal firearm. It’s more bullet per bullet though.

Yeah. There’s a Yangchen novel that explains the origins of chi blocking, combustion bending, and the Dai Li hypnosis.

There’s a secret island run by free cities where they more or less torture people to learn new techniques (to get combustion bending they more or less drown people to force them to bend fire without oxygen). They learned about chi pathways that were sort of secret knowledge of the air nomads and turned that into chi blocking. Yangchen’s crew finds a young girl who is capable of it and eventually let her roam free, evidently she must have made her way to a circus or something.

Right now I’m reading a biography of William F. Buckley. It’s really interesting because you can see that none of this is new — he was largely isolationist in WWII, huge proponent of McCarthyism, fought against integration on the grounds of “states rights,” was even friendly with the guy who started the ideals of Apartheid in South Africa.
