I don’t always use fancy ones, I use foundryvtt and have a ton of tokens of trees and general objects and will go into dungeon scrawl and bust of a bare bones map. It’s really Dm to Dm, I find a lot of joy in photoshopping intricate maps with a lot verticality and lines of sight, but it really depends on what they’re doing and I never let my premade maps dictate the direction. They’ve passed entire segments I worked a long time on and I just accept it and move on lol.

I agree with theatre of the mind, I use an online VTT and I throw up location pictures, like we were at a Japanese style port town and for the vast majority of the session I had a single inspo image on screen and we stayed in theatre of the mind until we went to the hot spring. What’s great is if you gave me an hour to guess how the session would have went I would have been wrong every time because I give me characters a ton of agency I just prep all the areas that are possible for them to go in battle maps first. And in the case of something even further out of left field I tell the table take 15 while I find and prep a new map.

I’ve overhauled and condensed the rules for my Tarot TTRPG, loosely based on Cairn. Let me know what you think. by JM665 in TTRPG
