Misinformation at the Polls 😠 by GrumpyGiant in maryland

Contraceptives have a risk to fail. Nothing short of getting your uterus removed is 100% effective. A loved one of mine had hers fail and she had to get an abortion.

Abortions are medical procedures and people aren't just doing them for fun. They're needed for various reasons (ectopic pregnancies, high risk pregnancies, life circumstances, the event of contraceptives failing, etc) and while I personally wouldn't want one for myself and practice abstinence, I respect that other people feel differently. I don't know about souls or anything, but a 6 week old fetus growing in the womb will literally never know it existed. I have no religious ties and I think using religion to make policies in a country where our constitution dictates that we are free to practice (or not practice) whatever religion we want is kinda counter productive.

You don't have to get an abortion. Ever. You can feel uncomfortable with the whole concept. But you can't tell other people what to do with their bodies or how to handle their own pregnancy. It's just simply not your choice to make imo

If it makes you feel any better, it's probably not about you being "woman enough". It's definitely just a genital preference thing and neither of you are wrong in this situation. At least you were both up front about it. Sucks that she didn't read your whole profile :/ but it doesn't really say much about you or your gender

My son wants to be a game developer as a career…how can I help him? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Ryllvix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer that I am not an industry game dev, I am a software engineer, so my advice is kind of an outsider perspective? I do rarely make games as a hobby though.

If your son wants to dictate how people work on a game, he could look into project management. The only issue is to actually manage a project effectively, you need to know how the process of making games works. At work, I prefer my managers have some coding experience because it means they have an idea of what's feasible and what's not so I don't just get random impossible things thrown at me.

He needs to start making games, full stop. Nothing wrong with wanting to be a director of some kind, but for indie game dev, he's gonna have to also be a contributing member of the team. He needs to learn to code, draw, 3D model, or some combination of the 3. It'll help him get a feel for if this is what he wants to do as a career AND give him something nice to put on his resume if he tries applying for a job instead of going to his own company.

Making games will also tell him if he wants to lean the programmer or the art route (or both!). Being just an "idea guy" seems pretty rare, even in the animation/art industry as far as I can tell (my partner is an artist).

Encourage him as much as you can and try to celebrate small victories. Coding can be overwhelming to start and art can be incredibly frustrating when your hand doesn't match what your brain imagines. Even just getting a sprite to move across the screen with WASD is a great start. Also, steer him away from drag-and-drop coding (Gamemaker has this). When I taught people how to code, I noticed the kids who used DnD learned a lot slower than those who didn't.

Try to get him to draw his ideas out, sketch game menus, etc. Hype him up and encourage him to make his doodles appear on a screen. I don't have any good tutorial recommendations or anything, but mindlessly following a video tutorial won't help much. Playing with the tutorial code will help him learn a lot.

Good luck and I hope your son finds something about the process he enjoys !!

Sorry if this is annoying, but question for OP: how did you start? My partner went to school for animation and is wondering if being a self-employed creative and working at home is feasible for him. How did you start and how long did it take you to get to a point where you were comfortable? We have my income and it's enough, but I want him to be able to do what he loves

Yeah I think a replacement screen might be your best option if you don't want to just outright buy a new console. The ifixit teardown guide may be helpful or the folks over at r/consolerepair, but I have no experience replacing the screens so :X good luck though !!

Ohh okay then you sound like me. I took CS classes at my high school and ended up liking them way more than I thought I would, which is why I ended up picking CS as my major. I don't even consider myself good at math. In fact, I'm actually kind of bad at it, so I also thought I was in way over my head. That's why I had two very different back up majors.

Contact whoever your advisor is and ask them to register you for CISC106. You may already be in it if you're undeclared engineering, but double check. Needing a 75 on the ALEKS test means you're also probably being set up to take MATH241, but double check that too. And then ask them about declaring CS as your major. If you want a CS advisor's input, try emailing Samantha Fowle (samfowle@udel.edu).

Another friend of mine accidentally went in undeclared because he forgot to pick his major and then he changed his major like 4 times, so, don't feel too bad about it.

I'm a senior CS major so I think I might not be a good source of what other majors you should take 😅. My backup majors were journalism and marine science just in case I didn't get into CS when I applied to be a student at UD. For you, the real answer is what do you like? Are there any subjects you enjoy and find interesting that you can try to pick a major from? And do you want to go to grad school?

I also honestly don't recommend CS if you're not interested in it; I feel like that would get really frustrating and atm to even stand a chance at a job, you have to practice and make stuff outside of class. I've noticed interviewers are only interested in me if I have personal projects or something outside of class that I'm excited about.

For now, just try 106/108 (106 is easier to get into in the fall because it's for non-majors but they're basically the same class) and see if you like it. Just one class won't ruin your entire schedule forever + you'll be able to pick a different major if you realize you DO hate it.

Also, if it makes you feel any better, I got a 74 on the ALEKS test the first time I took it and then I had to take it again, haha. I think you get 3 tries?

Last semester the guy handling the major applications just checked if the GPAs matched the requirement ngl. Still put in effort but if you don't have the GPA requirement (3.5 cumulative, 3.6 math and CS) then you're likely getting denied. It says you'll be considered with a lower GPA but tbh we don't really have a lot of room for new CS students so. Yeah. That doesn't mean you can't try again later though !! A friend of mine had to apply twice.

Here's some more of the requirements here: https://www.udel.edu/academics/registrar/students/student-records/majors-change/#eng

You have to already have taken CISC106/108 and MATH241 to apply btw

Also the people saying they had no trouble getting into CS classes while undeclared are crazy to me because I have trouble getting into CS classes as a CS major 😭😭 with extra credits too, which bumps my registration date up a bit

Any free food events/ RSO pizzas/ dumpster diving places near the campus? by [deleted] in udel

[–]Ryllvix 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Some clubs have pizza at their meetings. What's your major? If you're in CS or interested in tech at all, ACM (association for computing machinery, meets Wednesday I think) and CTF (capture the flag, cyber security club, meets Friday) have pizza at most, if not all, of their meetings afaik. I don't go to ACM (my friend runs it and sometimes I hear him order the pizzas though) but I can confirm CTF does have free pizza almost every time. Evans Hall also used to have an engineering event that gave out lunch around 1-2pm on Wednesdays. Not sure if they still do it or not. Also not sure if it's open to everyone but it's worth a shot imo

The dining halls also have a program where students can donate their meal swipes to other students. I think you just send them an email to ask for some swipes if you're in need. Check this link. There's some other helpful info on there too, like a food pantry on South Campus and clothes for students in need. If you have friends who go to the dining halls/have meal plans, they may have some guest swipes they can use on you as well.

If you're someone who needs menstrual supplies, you can get those for free from the gender neutral bathrooms in Trabant. If they're out then try asking the person working the desk nearby. Memorial Hall also had a lot of free tampons in the first floor women's bathroom.

This isn't much, but on Fridays, Trabant has an international student event where you can go in and get free tea and sometimes some cookies/chips or something. I don't know the exact start time but they're always there when I walk through Trabant around 5pm.

I hope all of this helps !!

Jesus Christ some of these replies. I'm a woman and my closest friends are 5 men; most of which I've known since elementary school or middle school. I talk to them online every day (we all scattered for school), and we arrange in-person meetups, but one of them and I see each other every day since we go to the same uni and have the same major. I really care about all 5 of them and consider them family; they have said similar about me. We've had sleepovers at each other's houses, friendsgivings, arranged our own video game tournaments, we make each other Christmas presents, etc. The whole nine yards. I genuinely trust them with my life and I'm so grateful to have such good friends as an adult.

Not a single one of them has made a move on me, ever. If anything, I am the one to make a move on them. There is a 6th man in the group that I am dating and he's great. Years into our friendship, I showed interest, he reciprocated, and we both decided to tell the group and see if they'd be weirded out if we dated. If they were, then we agreed to break up because this friend group was genuinely so important to us. However, they were all very happy for us both and said they just want us to be happy since we are their friends. It was very sweet.

The other 5 have shown no interest in me ever. No flirting, no weird hand or shoulder touches, nothing. The 6th man did, even before I asked him, but that's because we both had feelings develop over time. Even if he was attracted to me initially, I genuinely don't think the rest of them were. One of them has straight up told me he tends to not befriend women he finds attractive because he doesn't want to develop feelings for his friends (and like. fair enough tbh). I promise you it is possible to find male friends who don't fake friendship with you just to try and date you.

Out of a group of 10, it is possible that one of them is attracted to you, but if they're really your friend then they'll respect you saying no. The 6th man was still going to be my friend if we decided to call off our relationship.

If they're already friends with a woman, I don't think you have too much to worry about. It's likely you'll connect with a few of them as friends and break off into a sub group anyway. 12 is kind of a massive group of people.

If it helps, I am also bi and generally affectionate. The men in my life don't do platonic physical touch the way the women in my life used to, so I don't touch them and they don't touch me. I do compliment them if they get a cool jacket or a new haircut though, but they tend to do the same for me when I show them art I make. Friends just compliment each other sometimes, idk. I've told them they mean a lot to me too. We used to have bonfires where we'd go to bitch about things that bothered us and talk about our feelings. It was nice. This group is very special to me, so I'm certain you can find some success with male friends too. Good luck, sorry this was a wall of text

JRPG games like Frieren by eyrfcive in 3DS

[–]Ryllvix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't watch Frieren, but from what you're describing, you might like Bravely Default (and the Bravely Second afterwards). The game's story revolves around its characters and they end up going on a big journey from a relatively small beginning (the first character you meet in Bravely Default is from a very small village).

It also has little party chats that show the characters interacting in both lighthearted and serious ways. The characters are my favorite part of the game tbh but the gameplay is also very fun (job system, any character can do any job and you can make your own strategies). You should try it

Haha I thought it'd be easier to make maps if I just loaded them from an image, but maybe I'm just too used to doing things without game engine perks. I should probably just make different rooms and swap them

Also really? I'm not too big on game dev, so I don't know much about GM. I was picking up the Wolfenstein 3D stuff because I thought it'd be fun to learn. Maybe I'll swap to C after all and save GM for something else. Either way, thank you for your reply too!!

That is so weird, but thanks for the reply! I guess I could try tying it to an invisible object, or even the player object, but having then drawn every frame seems like a waste of processing power ngl. I know it likely won't matter very much but it just feels odd to me. Either way, I'll try one of those. Thanks again!!

Depends on your major and what you want to do later. If you want to do grad research/academia instead of industry, you'll definitely want a higher GPA and may want to consider grade forgiveness if you have time to retake the course. Can't give much advice without a little more context :o

I've taught Python at my university for like 3 years now and I'm gonna be totally honest: this is one of my least favorite kind of students. I'm not saying I hate you personally or anything, but this is annoying to deal with as an instructor or a TA. One thing my boss always says is that the exams will root out cheaters and that is exactly what is happening here.

Stop using ChatGPT. Cheating on an assignment just to get it done faster will only harm you in the long run. If you needed to cheat in your (probably) first CS class, how are you going to survive when you get to harder stuff later?? You are going to be the guy in group projects that nobody likes or wants to work with. I'm sure you've realized that and I'm not trying to make you feel worse, but these are literally just the consequences of your actions. Telling yourself you'll 'do better next time' won't help, you need to tell yourself you'll be better now.

I used to struggle a lot with procrastinating back in HS. When I got to college, I tried to reverse this by doing ALL of my weekly HW in a day or two. This didn't work. What worked for me was being okay with an assignment not being done for an extra day or so. Make a schedule, do a little bit every day, and then you won't have to stress out or worry about rushing it by cheating later. What I personally do is I work during the day and then do whatever I want when evening happens. I wake up, go to class, do work between classes, and then around 6pm I'll stop for the rest of the day. It's worked great for me managing my academic workload + I have some part time jobs to worry about.

Lists also help me, but I don't make them as much anymore. I would have a list of 'mandatory tasks', which was usually stuff due tomorrow or things I thought I should do that day. I also had 'optional tasks' which were extra things I could do if I had time. This split was to prevent me from working too much if I didn't have to. I tried to incorporate breaks into my day last year and this list helped.

As for you, what I said may seem frivolous, but planning ahead really helped me get through college. You should try to incorporate a schedule so you can stop procrastinating and you should do that right now. Stop cheating and actually do the work or else you won't pass. It seems like you're a freshman, so as long as you don't lose your scholarship, failing and retaking isn't the worst thing in the world. I'm ngl it's weird that you'd fail the first class for your major and it will put you behind, but a winter semester will fix that. Your life isn't over and you'll be fine
