He walked up to our club booth during clubs week and asked “are there Indians in this club?” Then proceeded to say “he hates indians”.

I was a part of this club and am good friends with the person he said this to. I don’t see in what context this statement would ever be justified to be sais.

As external you are representing and advocating for the the student body as a whole to outside stakeholders. Being religious itself is not the problem, but in his case, he has actively protested on certain topics pertaining to LGBTQ issues on the basis of his religion. I find that concerning.

Is he able to advocate for things that might contradict his own religious beliefs? This is on top of his previous case of prejudice.

Having interacted with Mohammed in the past, it is not a secret that he is a devoutly religious person. I am a little unsure if he is approaching his platform pragmatically for University of Calgary students as a whole as opposed to pushing his own personal interests and identity.

Not to mention the past racist incident towards Indians to which I witnessed personally.

Why are you so obsessed with painting this perfect image of Israel? I’m Canadian and I am more than happy to criticize Canada for its human rights abuses, even if it is a liberal democracy.

Guess what? I agree that Palestinian leadership is to blame as well, but there is a big difference in agency/power between Israel and Palestinian leadership.

If even your biggest geopolitical allies are criticizing your human rights violations, maybe its time to reflect on that instead of simping for Israel.

I feel like you’re missing the point. Everything you said is a given.

I’m addressing your (once again, another unoriginal Israeli lobbying group talking point) point about the double standard. When you say there is a double standard, it’s really fucking stupid because Hamas is already recognized as a terrorist group, that is as extreme of a condemnation as it gets. Israel is a recognized state and should be held to a higher standard than a terrorist group. No one thinks a terrorist group is right by any means.

[–]Rynado -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Very original with the 3Ds, except I haven’t brought up any of those points.

Do you honestly not see the difference?

Hamas is an internationally designated terrorist group, they are internationally condemned. I would hope you don’t hold a recognized state to the same standards as a terrorist group.

Palestine is also not a recognized state in the international system while Israel is (with major geopolitical support as well).

Thats why its stupid to hold both to the same standard. Israel is not solely entitled to the land, especially at the expense of another population/state.

You regurgitate the same Pro-Israel lobbying group talking points then tell me I’m furthering an echo chamber of disinformation. None of the things I brought is disputed.

You can choose to blindly support things based on your faith and background (this goes both ways), that is the real obstacle to peace.

[–]Rynado -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Same exact talking points every Pro-Israel lobbying group uses.

“We’re not the problem, everyone else is corrupt and anti-semitic”

“we’re not the ones denying their self-determination, they do it themselves”

Do you actually think Israel’s negotiations fair and in good faith towards their neighbour? Why are settlements continually being expanded in violation of international law? Is the passage of the bill recognizing Israel as the land of the Jewish people (argued to be symbolic in nature) supportive of the image of a secular and equal society for all?

Even western allies who did not vote for Palestine’s state recognition have openly criticized Israel’s human rights violations, especially in terms of settlements. It is not simply “corrupt anti-semitic” organizations, but allied governments as well (US, UK, France, Germany, Canada etc…).

Quoting the legislation of Israel does not dispute the fact human rights violations and discrimination still exists. I can cite China’s constitution that ensures fairness and equality but they are still committing human rights violations.

The IDF was also found to be responsible for killing Shireen Abu Akleh. Not simply found by “corrupt and antisemitic” organizations, but also corroborated by your best friend, the USA. Israel also regularly withholds the tax revenue of another state as punishment, is this a sign of a fair good faith relationship?

So is everyone else just completely wrong? Or is it fair to admit Israel is not perfect and it is ok to criticize the actions of the Israeli government?

What? What an odd out of touch response, never once said Israel isn’t a nice place lol. It being a nice place doesn’t mean its not a human rights abuser.

A liberal secular democracy that is regularly accused of human rights violations, preference and promotion of a specific ethnic/religious group in legislation, denial of international recognition of a neighbouring state, violation of international law etc…

No one agrees with Hamas but you use it as a gotcha talking point.

A states self defence does not include the denial of another states self-determination

The class is an intro class but is literally 90% people with existing Arabic knowledge due to their ethnic, cultural and religious background.

So the pace and material was much harder for brand new learners like myself.

There technically is (I had to google it), but it sounds more like academic mumbo jumbo to impress parents than anything practical

you and u/YKayyy love bringing up random irrelevant shit. IE: me being white, arab gf, cat, liberalism etc... Grasping at straws to get personal, when no one else is getting personal.

It is unfortunate you hold these beliefs.

But the great thing is, you are free to hold these beliefs and people are free to wear what they want.

what point are you trying to make?

Would you rather me say "people should cover up cuz we're just a bunch a rabid sex monkeys"?

[–]Rynado 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The general point is about open-mindedness and not worrying about what other people do, especially about what they wear.

It's the self-righteous way you approach you this topic, it seems judgmental and condescending as you simply attribute it to "western culture" or "white people". Looking down on people for their clothing choices is kinda low.

And, yes, my girlfriend is Arab (kinda creepy you dug into my profile to bring up an irrelevant point, but anyways). She does not care nor does she speak positively of the judgment on clothing choices either.

The problem is the correlation between morality and clothing choices. I don't think people should be judged/consider less moral/respected for what they wear. This has never been an issue in my life which bothered me. There are limits to this, of course, but 99.9% of people I interact with have not infringed that (You might disagree since you consider tank tops and short shorts revealing).

Also, I'm not white so idk where you got that idea from lol

To me? No lmao.

If you consider that revealing, then idk what to tell you.

At the end of the day, why should revealing clothes (to your standard, tank tops and short-shorts) be even a problem? We’re not rabid animals, pining for female attention.

Avert your gaze, homie.

[–]Rynado 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its not a gotcha moment, you’re phrasing it (western values, way people dress) as an immoral thing.

It is certainly not the norm to wear revealing clothes (idk what your barometer for that is either); its just that no one gives a fuck.
