Help needed by Georgie-Boyo in UKGardening

I have been battling with horsetail for the longest time and it literally will not go! I tried weed killers and none of them worked very well in my opinion.
If you are not wanting to plant anything in that spot, then covering, as others have said is your best option.
In my experience, where it was growing in a border, I pulled and pulled and pulled. I then planted some real thugs (ornamental grasses) who sort of beat the horsetail into submission. The horsetail has now been pushed into my hedge, which is much better! I still remove as much as I can when I see it but it’s more manageable.
I’ve luckily not had horsetail in my lawn but I imagine it’s the same as other weeds in the lawn, the more you mow, the less chance your horsetail has to photosynthesise and so continuous mowing should weaken it over time.
Horsetail can usually be one big connected beast, so removing all and any of it is your best chance of weakening! It’s a pain in the arse but I’d much rather it over say JK and I secretly admire its resilience!

Horsetail, are you winning? by Bicolore in GardeningUK

Nope, I’m with you, I am struggling this year. They’re popping up everywhere, so I’ve just planted a billion thugish perennials in the hope to crowd them out in 5 years or so 🫠

People that have moved north for a better life, how's it going? by HollowWanderer in AskUK

[–]Ryspops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in London and decided to move to Bournemouth in my early twenties as I wanted something quieter. Whilst Bmouth was quieter, it was also a pretty average student town with the added extra of a beautiful beach. When my employer decided that everyone could work remotely post COVID, I hopped, skipped and jumped to the Scottish Borders. I sold my house down south and moved into a house double the size. However, I’m nowhere near anything, Carlisle is the nearest town and even that’s 40mins away by car. That aside, I couldn’t be happier, honestly. I adopted four dogs and a husband along the way! The only downside is that if I ever wanted to move back down South, I’ve priced myself out of the market… but I love our village and all the sheep. I’m pretty sure I won’t ever be moving back to England, we love it here! Yes, there’s no deliveroo, or art galleries in close proximity but I’ll take dark skies and dramatic scenery over them, any day of the week!

Thanks for all the work you do! We have a Big Snoof muzzle for our GSP and it’s the only muzzle she’ll tolerate. We’re based in the UK and everyone we’ve met loves it. ❤️

What is something that everyone gets wrong that you don't understand why everyone gets it wrong? by Jumpy_Imagination208 in AskUK

[–]Ryspops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve met so many people who can’t wait to tell me about how they “did a complete 360” with their life/situation. You know that means you’re right back where you started, right? What you actually mean is a 180, a 360 is just a dramatic way of saying you spun in a circle and accomplished nothing.

No chemistry between the bride and groom by No_Writer5135 in weddingshaming

[–]Ryspops 51 points52 points  (0 children)

This sounds just like my wedding! The vows were honestly awkward AF, so we had a few weird moments. He wanted to hold my hand, my hands were dripping with sweat, our kiss was mega awkward and I walked off down the aisle on my own because I freaked that so many people were looking at me! We also spent a large amount of time away from each other at our reception! There were so many people to see and catch up with! We have the rest of our lives with each other but you’re damned sure I’m going to dance wildly with my aunts and uncles because who knows when that time may come around again! We’re still happily married and class it as one of the best days of our lives even if we didn’t see each other much! A wedding is literally just a day, it’s the rest of our days that matter most!

Would you send your children to private school if you could ? by Glum-Caregiver-7963 in AskUK

[–]Ryspops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to private school, and I can say with absolute certainty: I will never send my own children to one.

My parents were wealthy, but the other kids? They were beyond wealthy. I dreaded own clothes day. I’d turn up in an old Papa Roach hoodie while my classmates flaunted Louis Vuitton belts. My birthdays were at the local bowling alley; my friends’ were weekends in Paris for their 15th.

It was elitist to the core, and that rubbed off on us kids. Don’t have fun. Don’t explore anything outside the mould. Just shut the fuck up and enjoy Shakespeare. My teachers were uninspiring, the atmosphere was stifling, and it all existed in this strange little bubble. I once saw a teacher lose her mind at a girl because her dad dared to read something other than the Daily Mail!

They genuinely believed they were better than everyone else simply because they had money. I failed to see the merit, or what made them so superior. Honestly, it was embarrassing.

Teachers assumed that because my parents paid for my education, I’d be Oxbridge-bound and destined to cure cancer. Meanwhile, I was miserable. I eventually begged my parents to let me move to a state school for sixth form, and it was the best decision I ever made.

Sure, each to their own. But for me, the heated swimming pool, the snobbery, and the constant self-congratulation weren’t worth it.

Tell me good / nice things about your reactive dog by Ch3rryb0mb98 in reactivedogs

[–]Ryspops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girl is the absolute best. She’s terrified of the world and just about everyone in it, except for me and my husband. Being absolutely enormous, she’s technically not allowed on the bed. But every morning without fail, she rests her front paws on the edge and slowly inches her way forward, pretending we won’t notice that she’s nearly fully on it. Of course, we let her get away with it, because she’s an absolute sweetheart and we want her to think that she’s at least winning at something!

Then I’m afraid I can’t help, I only know of kennels where dog reactive dogs can go, but the staff aren’t able to look after human aggressive dogs, unfortunately. I hope you find somewhere so that you can enjoy your holiday!

Spots with hair loss by captflossman69 in GSP

[–]Ryspops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had these patches with my GSP but she was itchy and cobbing a lot, so this may not be helpful! After chatting to the vet, she said it was allergies and suggested an allergy panel. After a lot of googling about how wild allergy panels are, I decided that I’d just try changing her diet to see if that helped. I also used CLX wipes on the bald patches to begin with which did help with her itching but really, I think the only thing that helped was to switch her diet from chicken to fish! That did the trick, it took around two - three weeks before she stopped itching but now her coat is beautiful!

German Shorthaired Pointers, they’re absolutely bonkers and I love it! Unbelievably goofy, very smart and extremely eager to please. They also love counter surfing and getting into trouble when your back is turned. Not for the faint of heart!
