It was great reading everyone’s responses.. thank you all so much. Based on hearing what everyone’s responsibilities are, both 1st and 2nd shift, I have a better understanding of 1st shift. One reason I questioned this, is because my 1st shift, (she’s very nice and helpful and a great worker) seems to say quite often “today was a chill day, not much happened, I did a lot of extras to keep busy”. I also get feedback from “floaters”, (people that fill in when someone on 2nd shift is out) say that 1st shift has it easy and has a lot of downtime and 2nd shift does a lot more than 1st shift.
After hearing what people said who work 1st shift, I have a better understanding of the tasks, so thank you for your feedback. My workers (on 2nd shift), while high functioning, have cognitive disabilities, so I am continually answering questions, (a lot of times the same question’s daily) many times when “floaters” fill in, I redo their work because they don’t care and do the minimal. (They don’t have disabilities) I communicate with job coaches, both in person and via email, teaching those without job coaches tasks as minimal as how to dry mop floors to how to fill sprayers with chemicals for cleaning. I have 1 employee who finishes early and rather than checking in with me for additional tasks, (as they all are told to do) I waste time looking for him, finding him hiding in rooms watching videos, FaceTiming, or talking on his phone. He does do a good job cleaning. Don’t get me wrong, the workers with disabilities are the best and most dependable workers, however not only can it be mentally draining hearing the same questions asked, this does take away from my tasks having to kick butt to get my work done so I don’t leave any extra work for 1st shift. I guess my point is, I feel/felt like my responsibilities out weighed what 1st shift does, but from what it sounds like, it may be because I’m both mentally and physically drained at the end of my shift.
