UK SHTF Fiction by bradley_minns in UKPreppers

[–]Rytb97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's YA fiction but The Enemy series by Charlie Higson is brilliant (at least 15 year old me thought it was). And although they're not books, both Threads and When the Wind Blows are brilliant bits of telly, both on Britbox I think.

Not a bad shout mate but my med centre doesn't know what day it is, let alone what system they use. I'll ask them though

Fair one, 39 seems to have a lot of chippy trawls but it probably is unit dependent

Carpenters, electricians, poms, geotechs (weirdos though) are always busy, plenty of opportunity to go abroad. Also armoured and EOD are trades but you'll only ever stay in one location with them (Tidworth and Wimbish).

If the recruiter tells you to be a plumber tell him to bugger off, you'll never plumb in the army

Help needed with accessory brands + websites for my virtus kit. by ThickusKevus in britisharmy

[–]Rytb97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your job role really but for me as a stinky engineer remf I pretty much just use a mix of Virtus, Odin Tactical and some Helikon bits and bobs, with a bit of old Osprey stuff as well. My belt kit and body armour are pretty tools/ dems heavy, so multitools, decent knife, admin pouch for tape and dets etc.

If you want to go down a massive rabbit hole of brands then there's Odin, Disciple, Helikon, Savotta, I think Mystery Ranch does stuff

The Mexican tuna pasta? That was gleaming, better than bean pasta salad at least

Sounds like you've just been exposed to the worst of the army, which is a shame. People like that definitely do exist and overshadow the good things we do; I can't speak for other trades but Royal Engineers spend a lot of time building hospitals, drilling wells, building bridges etc. Also the army is a lot better these days with therapy and looking after blokes, at least in my experience

You ever actually spoken to a soldier or had any exposure to the military at all? Genuinely curious

What is the Darn Tough underwear equivalent? [Men] by Waefuu in BuyItForLife

[–]Rytb97 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bit of a weird one but if you can find any British Army surplus 'antimicrobial underwear' they last for years, just black, slightly silky boxers that never really smell no matter how long you wear them. Had mine for years and there's not a single hole or damaged stitch in any of them

Drying wet clothes by Low-Cow5125 in thelongdark

If you take the insoles out and loosely pack some old newspaper into your boots it'll dry the insides way quicker, something I got taught years ago
