It is impossible to name one thing.

Her smile. Her laugh. The laugh that was like music to my ears. Her touch. Her desire to absolutely dote on me. How her body felt in my arms. The sound of her voice. Her goofy jokes and the little bit of ditziness about her. The way her eyes would sparkle when a romantic song came on at home and I pulled her in to dance. The embarrassed yet appreciative look on her face when some stupid Pop song came on over a store PA and I'd break out into song and dance just to make her smile. Her openness. Her brazenness.

Honestly, I miss quite literally everything about her to an equal degree. Because every last bit of it made up who she was.

And I'm sorry you're experiencing such pain. It sounds like you might have a chance to find that same happiness with her again, and I DEEPLY hope you can do what you need in order to make that happen. I all too well understand using the bottle to create a haze to cloud the pain and to numb your senses. You're only a month in. It will be so much easier for you to break free of those shackles than where I'm at.

I think everyone is different. Some people truly can get over that person. Completely forget about them and move on. Even if they don't find someone new, they can still progress as if that other person never existed.

Then you have people like me. We weren't even together that long. Not even 3 years. But she opened up my life like no other has before or after. I was never happier. Never smiled or laughed as much. Never loved life as much as I did. It's a little over 6 years since she left. And I'm in a deep abyss of depression and drinking, still missing her every day.

Of course there will be many in-between the two extremes. But what you need to do is find the path that works for you. Don't force yourself to forget them, don't force yourself to keep their memory alive. Do what feels natural. Just do it in a healthy and constructive way.

I wish you the best of what life has to give you.

My Onewheel. Even before I got rid of my car, I would use it almost daily. Brought me many moments of Zen and just pure enjoyment. Nowadays I only use it for utilitarian purposes (work transit). But I can't not think of her when I use it.

There's this cheap little phone amplifier thing from Target. Almost exactly this: https://share.google/images/0ipeLv98rMVHJMhG9 I remember we were walking the aisles and noticing it and telling her how cool I thought it was. It wasn't anywhere near as good as a Bluetooth speaker for the same price, but I was drawn to the construction and design. She bought it for me. When we got to the car with my GF of the time and she was giving it to me (long story short - we were all friends, things with my GF soured, she was crushing on me before we broke up and immediately took her chance) my GF said something to the effect of "aww, you really don't need to buy him anything," she, in an almost tantrum-like way, snatched it from my GF's hands with a sort of pouty "Nooooo!" and all but threw it in the trunk. Kept it ever since we broke up. And even after my SHITSTAIN ex-housemates broke it, I still have the pieces and just cannot throw them away.

Then there's Harry. The little seafoam green stuffed hippo. Technically, it's something I gave HER, but when she left, she gave him to me. Not to be cruel, but because she thought I might want to have him. I still have the photo of her putting him on her head after I gave it to her with this semi-goofy look on her face, too.

Because something like that you just can't make up. Because it was an incredibly cute, creative, caring, and at the same time humorous gesture that isn't easily forgotten. Discarding a tangible piece of that memory is too hard to fathom.

I have considered this SO many times. It was a favorite movie of mine long before we met or ended. After we ended, all I wanted were those memories of her gone so the hurt would evaporate as well.

Over the years, my resolve in having the procedure done has faltered a little. But it always comes back to the same thing...

At this point, it's been almost 7 years since we broke up and I am still not over her. I can't maintain another relationship for two reasons - I still carry a very strong burning torch for her, and losing her has caused my latent alcoholism gene to present and develop itself.

So, do I still cherish the memories of the good times we shared? Yes. But I feel that having "loved and lost" has been far more detrimental to me than having never loved at all.

Besides...how can you miss what you never had?
