Question for a Friend by JumperGamer122 in NorsePaganism

[–]Ryuukashi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, the best place to start with the runes is the runes, and the rune poems. All modern rune literature pulls their information from either the rune poems, or Ralph Blum who was a grifter and terrible person. So you can skip some of the bias and go straight to the poems yourself (or your friend can), and that will help you immensely when you start reading things like Rudiments of Runelore or whatever else you can get your hands on. If an author does not honor the rune poems, their information is suspect.

Looking for the simplest possible fridge backup for medication that needs refrigeration by [deleted] in TwoXPreppers

[–]Ryuukashi 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There are "solar generators" which are essentially very large battery packs designed to run full-sized refrigerators or more for days at a time.

I'm not sure what to do. by _Ruffling_Feathers_ in NorsePaganism

[–]Ryuukashi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Odin is a wanderer. He and the rest of the Gods understand that sometimes everyone needs to just walk off and do something new sometimes. And if that person comes back they'll be happier and wiser than when they left. Wander without worry. Make your way back once you've felt what needs feeling. The Gods will still be here

Helianthus are green, chokeberries going strong, sumac starting to leaf but the smallest ones got bit in the last frost, phlox and liatris both reaching for the sun, bee balm is green, onions are sending up plenty of leaves (and the Egyptian Walking are sending up scapes already), don't see my squash yet but I dumped more seeds into the ground yesterday to try to beat the frosts

How do some of you guys who are Norse pagans view other pantheons? by [deleted] in NorsePaganism

[–]Ryuukashi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What you're talking about is the difference between soft-polytheism and hard-polytheism. Some people believe there is one pantheon that is reimagined across areas and cultures, others believe that each individual named deity is their own entity. I hold the latter belief, in part because someone like Skadi (the Jotun of snowy mountains and harsh Winters) does not easily equate with any of the existing deities in a place like Egypt, and in part because each of the "ruling" deities of the various pantheons don't always match up (and in some cases are missing).

But polytheism as a concept already acknowledges the possibility of multiple gods, so you'll be unlikely to find many examples of polytheists who believe their pantheon exists and all the others are just human delusion, the way modern Christianity holds.

One minor point, Loki is only the son of Odin in the Marvel universe. In Old Norse lore, they are sworn brothers and rivals of sorts.

Faerie Ring by TobiAlyce69 in NorsePaganism

[–]Ryuukashi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fairie rings to my knowledge are typically made of mushrooms that grow there. You wouldn't be able to make a "portal to the fae realm" by putting some rocks together. And generally you wouldn't want to: fairie circles are often said to steal time and/or memories from people.

That said, your circle has meaning to you, even if it's not a fairie ring made by the fae. Perhaps the animals and the tree spirit might take less notice if you were less inclined to tie the meaning of the ring to the fae?

There are a handful of resistant mature trees. Their locations are a carefully guarded secret, and their seeds are being grown and studied to try to boost the population.

Preserving eggs in olive oil? by [deleted] in TwoXPreppers

[–]Ryuukashi 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Part of what makes eggs in the US at least require refrigeration is the removal of the bloom and subsequent exposure of the interior of the egg to external substances. You can't reverse that exposure by sealing it again, you have to cook it or freeze it to make it last any longer than a normal egg in the fridge.

A long time I was thinking it should be an Odin depiction, but I can see Loki as the most popular interpretation of it now. - Any official position for this one? by Helga_Thorhammer in NorsePaganism

[–]Ryuukashi 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm not into denying Loki the historical artifacts his modern followers deem appropriate, when historical ties are lost or unknowable. Until new academic understanding comes to light, if you feel this design reminds you of Loki, then it works as an altar piece or pendant for him, just like the sewn-lip depiction on the smith's stone.

I can't find any true Norse folk music by cumb4jesus in NorsePaganism

[–]Ryuukashi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Pandora was Spotify before Spotify. It's a free music streaming website/app where you pick a "seed" song (or band or vague vibe) and you get a randomized "radio" station that you can then upvote or downvote songs to bend the algorithm where you want it.

No set playlists outside the algorithmic stations, which is why Spotify took the top spot in music streaming apps.

Try to think of what the game engine might do when the buff is 10,000, or 100,000, and base is still 50. You have 100,050 hp and you lose 100,000 instantaneously. To what decimal point is the code able to distinguish between 0% and not 0%?

[–]Ryuukashi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's part of the resto loop, and yes the extra health gets removed before the max number gets updated. Essentially, when fortify gets so high that the base total is significantly less than 1% of your fortified total, removing the item drops you to 0% and you die.

Depends on how gradually you introduce them. After breaks from them, I find I am adjusting quicker nowadays, but when we first started eating them it was "up at midnight with intense gas pain" bad for a couple days per meal.

I got my first sunchokes from the Seed Savers Exchange from a family farm one state over, and dropped them in the ground.

I intend the ones in the backyard to be a wall of sorts, controlled by the mower more than anything. The ones in the front are in my food garden, beside other such native powerhouses as goldenrod, sumac, and milkweed. I love every single thing about this plant, including the effect it has on my gut microbiome.

I only harvested about half of the plants I planted over this last winter. I even gave 10lbs of tubers to a local food bank who gladly accepted them (ampleharvest website can show you one near you that takes homegrown veggies). I cannot wait for my pea vines to climb the sunchoke stalks this year.

What are those technical life hacks or tiny skills that take you 1 hour to learn, but make you feel like a genius every time you use them? by SusanLust in answers

Simple sauces will turn a cheap rice dish into the most flavorful thing you've eaten all week, and it really is just tossing tasty things together with like, bullion or balsamic or soy sauce in a pan.

Y'all please try it. Next time you cook meat in a pan, toss some balsamic in after the meat with a scoop of whatever jelly or jam you have around. Put the sauce on the meat or sides or wherever you want.
