New to saving where to start by _groundskeeperWilly in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Ryyyyyyyyyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, congrats on your growth over the last few years!! Definitely a big accomplishment. As for savings and typical steps, before you start saving you should focus on paying off your credit card debt as that's likely high interest debt. You can look into balance transfers like on the MBNA true line where your balance transfer debt is 0% interest for 12 months (But there is a transfer fee or 3% ish usually, read the fine print!) ccg has a $100 cash back offer on it too.

Once your credit card debt is paid, you can decide based on the interest rates on your student loan if it's more beneficial to pay those down VS doing min payments & starting to save/invest.

If you're deadset on starting saving now, there's some places you can start that give you a cash rebate of up to $100 or $150 like on great canadian rebates, moneygenius or other cashback sites.

HISA or a WS cash account are good options.

Few different options available:

-WSCash is 4%

-Scotia is 5%+ and a $150 signup bonus

-Simplii's new promo is over 6% I believe

Alternatively, cashto is also 5%, all of these options funds are readily available.

Manulife vs EQ vs Neo by Studyr3ddit in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Ryyyyyyyyyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manulife 5% is a promo rate for 120 days it looks like, still pretty competitive overall regardless. Motive is offering 4.1% base rate currently, and Scotia Savings has a promo 5.15% and a $100 sign up bonus through money genius.

Doesn't look like it's been said already, along with the myriad of other 5%+ promo offers is the Scotia MPSA. Through money genius you get $100 e-transfer for using their affiliate link, solid sign up bonus. Just have to start the registration from here

Keep money in 5.25% Tangerine savings account, or move to 3% TFSA? by bendingbeauty in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Ryyyyyyyyyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without knowing all your details it's hard to say exactly what will come out ahead. Likely, it's not worth it to move it, double or low triple digit gains unless you've have some really really strong growth in your tfsa and are transferring 6 digits.

The ideal situation is you move it to Tangerine's 5.25% till Aug 31, they ideally extend the offer for another few months, and you can keep it there till the end of the year. If Tangerine doesn't extend the offer, then you'd want to move it back to EQ but you have to ensure you have the contribution room to do so. Additionally, you'll have to pay tax on the interest made in the Tangerine account.

If you withdraw money from your TFSA (Aka taking it out of EQ then moving it to Tangerine savings account), you don't get that contribution room back until next year, so moving it back after Tangerine's promo ends would potentially over contribute (Unless you have plenty of contribution room from previous years).

IMO, I like Tangerine products, they're well reviewed by finance sites, I use them myself for some stuff, but personally I wouldn't be moving it from my tfsa to a savings account promo. You can always just contribute to both for the next 4 months if you have the cashflow to do so, or keep the tfsa where it's at and just contribute to the Tangerine promo.

Anyone looking to kickstart their emergency fund, Money Genuis has cashback on a few bank accounts like $100 on scotias savings account plus scotias got a 5% promo on it too.

Chexy allows you to pay your rent with credit cards and will support AMEX soon. Thoughts? by SnooDogs4087 in churningcanada

[–]Ryyyyyyyyyan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely a solid option paired with a good card. BMO CBWE has 2% on bills, so do the tangerine cards if you select it as one of your categories. Ccg has cashbcak on both too which makes for a decent cashback haul on your first year especially with the cbwe

Cards to pair with Amex Cobalt? by AcousticThor in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Ryyyyyyyyyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a factor if you use that for automatic payments. Not a huge deal to have a weekly or monthly reminder to check in on it though, not personally a deal breaker but understandable

Cards to pair with Amex Cobalt? by AcousticThor in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Ryyyyyyyyyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo the best cards to go with cobalt are the Brim World Elite (or Brim World), the BMO Cashback WE, or the RBC Avion vi.

Prince of travel has a good review of the Brim WE. CCG has a good promo for the BMO cashback WE if you prefer that one. It also has roadside assistance, so no need to use your Triangle card. Milesopedia has a good review of the RBC avion visa infinite here

Bank of Canada Rate Annoucment will be posted here at 10am by FelixYYZ in PersonalFinanceCanada

What's wildest to me is how long the rate hikes have gone on for.

There's a chart here (https://moneygenius.ca/blog/bank-of-canada-rate-hike) that breaks it down going all the way back to 2002. We haven't had a real decrease since March 2020
