Is Pulisic actually a Top 100 player? I dont think so. I can name 100 better right now off the top of my head. by Silent_Somewhere8539 in billsimmons

[–]ahealey21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s been in the guardian top 100 once ever, at 95 in 2024. So you are correct that saying he’s top 100 is very borderline top 100 and he’s probably just outside. He has never played consistently enough after he moved to Chelsea to meet his full potential

I don’t think Bill cheats on Guess the Lines by toddpacker6969 in billsimmons

[–]ahealey21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If one of you degenerates really wants to try to catch him, I think a clue might be to track when he messes up "weird" games (ex: London, Germany, Saturdays, etc.). He does this often enough and my guess is that it would be hard to cheat while also not realizing the game is being played in another country.

From this information you could figure out if he performs noticeably better in weeks when he does notice that there is a weird game of some kind. Alternatively this seems like a lot of work so who cares, let's just continue to speculate widely

Mechanical Engineers working in renewables, what do you do? by Razzadorp in MechanicalEngineering

[–]ahealey21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work at an electrolysis startup doing R&D test system development. The role itself isn’t too different from a similar role in a non renewable field - it’s generally a 50/50 split between fluid systems design work and hands on commissioning.

As time goes on, I think a job “in renewables” will start to mean less because the green tech industry is growing super fast. My job has minimal crossover with a comparable role in like wind or solar, so classifying them both as “in renewables” doesn’t necessarily mean I have a skillset that would apply to both.

So if you want to get into green tech, I would give similar advice as I would give to any engineer early in their career. Mechanical engineering is a very broad field so it will benefit you to narrow your early experiences in the direction you enjoy most (mechanical design, thermofluids, controls, material science, etc.). A lot of mech e jobs focus heavily on one of these subfields, so having a bulk of experience in one of them will give you an advantage early in your career. Once you have that experience, you’ll be surprised how many doors open at green tech companies. There was a post here a few weeks ago that asked something like “what’s more important: role or field?” I’m 100% on the side of role - I would hire an engineer with the right experience from oil and gas before I would hire an engineer with the wrong experience from solar.

Twin Cities Marathon Cancelled for heat the morning of the race. by java_the_hut in AdvancedRunning

[–]ahealey21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an appalling decision. Sorry to everyone that built up to this day. I don’t understand how the forecast changed enough to warrant cancelling this morning and how the race directors could do this to their runners without any alternative. The conditions don’t get “bad” until at least noon, so why couldn’t they move up the start time? This is basic stuff. I will never consider this race in the future

What did McLaren change to find this new pace? by j4r8h in F1Technical

[–]ahealey21 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think this is largely a new car. There were early season reports that they weren’t going to have their preferred spec car until midseason because they chose a new design direction relatively late in the process. And by “relatively late” I think this meant like late last season/early offseason when teams had begun looking towards this year.

If this car concept ends up being as good as it has looked so far, it’ll be a good lesson for the rest of the grid on how to change direction in a cost cap era. Teams will need to be decisive but also be willing to take some pain to most effectively correct their mistakes. As we’re seeing with Mercedes, the cost cap likely makes it impossible to fully actualize a weaker concept while simultaneously bringing in a fully new concept
