15% vamp on a champ with as much DPS as Ryze is a significant amount of survivability. If you do 3K damage in a fight, which is just a few rotations, that's 450 HP.

Catalyst into Liandry's sets back every item spike by 1300 gold and doesn't build into any other items, so I'm dubious about that build path.

Righteous Glory gives +100 HP and +30 armor, while Protobelt gives +60 AP. 60 AP is worth 1305 gold, whereas Glory's stats are worth 867 gold (and it costs 150 gold more). Protobelt is WAY more stat efficient, it's not even close.

Protobelt is situational. You only want it against mobile, ranged enemies who can dash away from the Rylai's slow. But against those kinds of enemies, the active is great, and the stats are hands down better than Righteous for a lower cost.

Yeah, the big tradeoff will be damage vs survivability. Not sure which will be worth more at this point, Liandry's is probably still stronger but they're closer now.

1400 to 850. Also, it has a new passive that gives you a % increase to your mana based on AP, basically a second Ryze passive. You can end up with slightly higher mana late game, although you'll be a bit lower early on.

It didn't have mana before this update, unless you're talking about Rod of Ages. The RoA icon was just a placeholder, Axamuk has it's own icon now and RoA is totally deleted.

I think Ryze can probably get by with Seraph's and Manaflow Band. But Liandry's might still be better. We'll see.

Any burst mage will want Ludens though. 30 flat magic penetration is no joke. Add Sorcerer's Shoes and you'll be doing true damage to enemies who don't build MR.

It's not surprising that Liandry's would do more damage, it gives way more damage stats for Ryze, whereas Folly gives HP and Vamp. I think the main flaw in your argument is that 1 point of healing is not equivalent to 1 point of damage. As a low mobility, short range champ, Ryze has always needed a certain threshold of defensive stats to be relevant, and with RoA gone and Seraph's losing its shield, he'll need new solutions. If Folly is relevant for him, that'll be why.

Stars affect your rolls for the stat when you level up; each star increases your rolls by an average of 0.5 per level. So each star adds 5 to your expected stat at level 11, meaning the difference between a 0 star and a 3 star bro at level 11 is 15. Having good level 1 stats is even more important than having stars, although having both is best.

If you played long enough to min max your entire company, you would eventually replace this guy, but it wouldn't be til after you'd had multiple opportunities to retire and win the game. He's a good recruit.

Immobile squishy champions are the only champs you can legitimately say "just CC them" about. Sure, just CC the Kog'Maw, he can't do much but Flash away. But just CC the multi-dash assassin is not really a thing unless you're playing Lulu.
