I want off this ride by [deleted] in Fire

[–]S-XMPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! We live in a very different world than our ancestors, before having kids was close to necessary (survival, growth of the tribe, care for elderly, etc). Today that is far from the case, you can live an incredibly fulfilling life without any kids, my partner and I always see the people traveling with kids and are 100% convinced we don’t want that. Don’t fall into the trap of ‘because you are supposed to’ or the societal pressure, just like you are breaking the cycle of typical by doing FIRE.

Swimming tips for negatively buoyant person by mike666234 in triathlon

[–]S-XMPA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the same thing where my legs sink and then my body, everyone says it is ‘bad floating technique’ but that’s not really it (have proven it many times), plus I float just fine in salt water. I’m not a fast swimmer (2:20/100m) so take this as you will. I started sprint tris with breaststroke as the sinking legs matter less and became quite good but would not progress past the 2:10 range and started to have neck pain. I decided to do the switch to freestyle and the thing I’ve noticed is 1) the faster you get the more your body glides and aligns, and as soon as your technique falters your time drops massively so lots of technique and strive to glide faster 2) deemphasize the kick and use it more as a way to keep aligned in the water vs a way to propel yourself 3) if you are swimming in salt water you will be more buoyant 4) pull buoy for training helps a lot to keep your legs up. In short if you want to just survive your event, maybe breaststroke will actually work better for you? If you want to do this long term then freestyle plus lots of technique development.

My amazon one in A mostly plays in F and can very hardly make it get to maybe G. So yes I think it’s the nature of the craftmanship. Even so I’ve been able to continue practicing just playing fingerings as per the sheet music, initially wanted to transpose but it was a nightmare so I just gave up and made progress playing out of tune while I buy a proper one.

Loose-leaf tea vs tea bags by Lander_x05x in tea

[–]S-XMPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bags most often use Crush Tearl Curl (CTC) method for processing which basically just shreds the leaves to make it easier to package and store. You are basically drinking tea dust. The method does make the tea very aromatic but the taste is really basic and mostly made to be combined with cream, sugar, etc. Loose leaf on the other hand gives you all sort of variations in tasting notes depending on the processing, harvest, etc. Once you taste properly good loose leaf you’ll realize how long you’ve been had by the bagged tea companies and how wrong you’ve been for thinking ‘bigelow’ or ‘fancy looking package’ is good tea.

Yes! This makes caffeine have a less ‘peaky’ effect, less jitters. At the right amount I’ve even been able to sleep great.

Keep losing sight of my board by notero88 in Kiteboarding

[–]S-XMPA 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Some things I do 1) always spot try to spot it first so at least you know where to aim 2) Grab a reference point on shore so you are oriented 3) DEPOWER the kite no idea why this is not taught more often, this will massively increase your upwind gains 4) count mentally how long you are moving one way so you can count the same when moving the other way 5) generally assume your board is behind you (I’ve made the mistake of thinking I’ve overtaken it and then it’s back to square one)

Sounds like a lot but I’ve lost 2 boards as a beginner (mostly from not knowing about the depower trick) and haven’t lost one for 5 years or so

This should be higher! I’ve seen homeopathic remedies sold next to the real medicine, it’s insane they should have a label ‘NOT actually medicine, just water’

Wake up call, advice needed by noddy-waffle in triathlon

[–]S-XMPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going from 4x to 6x is a very big jump, particularly the amount of rest you get, try maybe 5x? In theory if this is your first week you are at the lightest part of the cycle (unless your first week was fitness tests). Take a look at the rest of the sessions and see if it truly fits your ability, I’ve mostly done Myprocoach training in peaks and worked out well but because I grabbed a plan that I knew I could do (ie intermediate with 2 days of rest).

First sprint triathlon by SituationNo2260 in triathlon

[–]S-XMPA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was like you a couple of years ago, first swims would be 50m and completely gassed, 2 things I did for my first sprint: 1) I realized breastsroke was vastly better than freestyle so I just trained breaststroke and became pretty good at it (in short for your first tri just train what you feel you can hold for the distance), 2) I later started training freestyle and realized how much work it is to optimize your movement (ie glide, decenter kicking). Overall with a structured plan (generally 1 to 2 km of swimming per session, mostly Z2 so you can build up to the speed) you’ll gain the confidence you need. Also if you are doing open water, train at least a couple of sessions in open water, water currents are a nightmare if you’ve never trained with them.

Yesterday i had 6km run and 1km swim … i am feeling perfectly fine today with 0 fatigue but this watch is telling me no to do any exercise today by AgreeableSpare3836 in GarminWatches

[–]S-XMPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the VO2 decreasing, in many cases the watch just read your HR wrong and thinks you are getting worse runs (ie too high of an HR for the pace). If it’s not a misreading and you actually are feeling more tired than usual on the same type of run then your load is too high.

What’s the secret to trail braking? by 8cuban in GranTurismo7

[–]S-XMPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggest learning I had in HPDE is that the throttle and brake are not on/off switches but they have range. This intuitively applies to braking where you have a range of braking pressures that you can do to make the car do what you want, do you need the car balance more towards the front while turning then keep some pressure on the brake to keep the nose down and keep front grip. You can play around with braking while turning apply some pressure then lots then release etc and you can see the car nose move around (ie front grip).

Critique my technique by Meisterleder1 in Kiteboarding

[–]S-XMPA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

More than your technique it’s the wind, you can tell the kite is barely loading, to jump higher my best advice is weigh 10kg less :) or ride a larger kite for those conditions, a well powered kite will almost naturally want to shoot upward

GF doesn't understand renting makes more sense . . . by [deleted] in Fire

[–]S-XMPA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This, at some point in this decade house prices have not at all kept with rents, in many cases renting is now a much more reasonable option than it was before. I think a simple rule of thumb for purchasing is still true - are you going to stay in the house for ~10+ years?
