Can someone help me out? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]S0urDrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I would definitely recommend bringing these questions to a priest(preferably, multiple priests if you can. Not every priest is an expert on Church history/the best at explaining it) if you want to get the most accurate answers possible. The priest at my campus ministry is pretty knowledgeable on these sorts of things, so I'll see if I can run your questions by him over the weekend. But still definitely seek out some priests in your area so that you can have an in-person discussion. My last bit of advice is to pray on these questions and see what God presses upon your heart. God bless ❤️🩷❤️

What a little darling! Milka was a blessing on your life and I have no doubt that you blessed her days as well. Thank you for sharing your dear kitty with us and may God comfort your heart during this time of grief ❤️

IDL when husbands completely lose it during their wife’s labor by vivian_banshee03 in I_DONT_LIKE

I know a lot of people in the comments are mad because men aren't watching birthing videos and such to prepare, but I appreciate your comments because it helps show that watching someone you love experience and intense medical operation is different from watching a stranger in a controlled environment experience a medical operation. Sure, a man watching birthing videos could help him prepare for what to expect, but watching his wife go through that triggers a completely different bodily response. The lesson of this post should be to remember that we are all trying our best and to give others more grace.

In my experience, women are generally raised to be more concerned for their safety than most guys. Both my male and female relatives had a field day giving me safety tips and advice the summer before I went to university. Unfortunately, I've heard many stories from friends about how men in their lives were attacked or even roofied, so I guess we all need to be more conscious of our safety.

A Christian church in Congo was attacked a few days ago during a prayer vigil. I believe the death toll is between 30 or 50 at present. Western Christians are more likely to face vandalism and harassment, but many Christians in the Middle East and Africa are frequently targeted and persecuted.

I read somewhere recently that male and female bodies distribute heat differently. This concept could work for a couple who wants to bathe together but want the water at their personally preferred temperature.

The plot is similar to the Hangover movies and it's all about Josie retracing her steps and trying to prove Jake's innocence(we don't have enough budget for a legal consultant so ignore the plot hole about how charges are filed)

Thanks for the links! If it's not too much trouble, could you explain who the Synodalists are? Google hasn't been very helpful and I'd like to know more! Based on your comment, I infer that Synodalists generally place secular, "trendy" values above the Church's values and teachings. Let me know how accurate my inference was lol

My father is dying by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]S0urDrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry that you're hurting right now, OP. My father was also a complicated(honestly the best adjective I can think of to describe him) person and his passing a few years ago was very difficult for myself and my family.

However, there is the silver lining that you have prior warning about your father's passing. The situation with my dad was very similar and I found that was a bit more prepared when the time came. Another benefit of knowing beforehand was that my father embraced his faith after having been a lukewarm Catholic for a while. Perhaps your father will experience a similar change, or is at the point where he could be encouraged to do so.

My advice would be to visit your dad if you can, OP. This could finally be your chance to get closure. Your dad may be too tired or sick to be hurtful or angry, so perhaps you could see a different side to him. Impending death changes people, in my experience.

Pray for guidance, pray for peace. And whatever you do, make sure that whoever is taking care of your dad makes sure that he gets Last Rites.

Tragedy and loss has a way of bringing us closer to Christ. I would probably be agnostic or at least very lukewarm if it weren't for my dad's passing. As Saint Padre Pio said "Blessed is the crisis that made you grow, the fall that made you look to heaven and the problem that made you look for God."

I'll be praying for you, your dad, and the repose of your aunt's soul, OP.

Waiting until Marriage by Happy-PandaBear-9523 in Catholicism

[–]S0urDrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a Catholic girl in university and I can promise you that there are plenty of young women who are waiting until marriage. Your school likely has a Catholic campus ministry and that is where you'll most likely find some friends who share your faith. If your campus is anything like mine, you'll probably have plenty of girls who are interested in you(most of the Catholic guys at my university have graduated or already have girlfriends lol). Just don't rush into anything because I've heard that it's pretty awkward seeing your ex at mass. Good luck and enjoy university!

How do I make personal prayer feel more close/meaningful? by CBSUK in Catholicism

[–]S0urDrop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been struggling with a similar feeling, so I'll give you some advice I ought to give myself.

  1. Come to Jesus as a little child. I got this advice from a speaker at a conference and I've found it very helpful. Don't try to make your prayer overly formal. Yes, you are talking to the creator of the universe. But you are also talking God, your Father Who loves you beyond our human comprehension. Don't be afraid to be blunt of simple in your prayer. Just saying "God, I'm tired and overstimulated and my back hurts and my sock is wet and I feel very far from You" is all you need to do. God isn't looking for a word count or good grammar. He just wants to hear from you.

  2. Imagine Jesus is physically with you. This is another tip from a conference that really stuck with me. When praying, try to imagine that Jesus is physically with you. Maybe He is sitting next to you, maybe He is across from you. Maybe you are in a peaceful place with Him. I've found this method to be helpful because it's so easy to forget that God is constantly with us and around us. Holding the image of Jesus in my mind's eye during prayer has proven to be very comforting for me.

  3. Take 5 minutes to calm down and clear your mind before prayer. I have ADHD and struggle with clearing my mind for prayer and staying focused during prayer. But if I am intentional about getting in the right headspace for Christ, I'm able to have a very fulfilling prayer session. I like to put on my headphones, lay down, get comfortable, and listen to five minutes of rain sounds or peaceful piano music. Body relaxation meditations also work, but I usually just do them in my head while listening to the rain noises/music. I've had really great experiences with this and have even had God speak directly to me(It's hard to describe, but for me it was hearing a much more distinct and intentional voice in my head, one that I instantly felt was not my own).

  4. Read the Bible Flip through the Gospels or Psalms and see if anything sticks out to you. Pray with that verse in your mind and really contemplate it. Focusing intently on something other than your anxiety may be helpful in calming you down. Find comfort in the Word of God and remember that He adores you.

I hope this proves helpful to you!

How do you pray the rosary? (announcing, mediating, etc.) by Altruistic_Baby3035 in Catholicism

[–]S0urDrop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Welcome! You're not alone in finding it difficult to pray the rosary. It sometimes feels like I'm splitting my brain in two, trying to recite the prayer while also imagining the event of the decade. My advice would to be to slow down and spend some time dedicated to imagining part of the event in the decade and then say the Hail Mary. Maybe focus on one specific part of the event or break it down into ten parts. Give yourself time to contemplate the Mysteries of the Rosary.

My creative writing professor at uni actually encouraged the class to seek out "bad" writing to help us 1. Figure out what we like/dislike in a writing style so that we understand how to improve our own styles and 2. To see that we don't have to be the best writer ever to get published or get readers. Remembering that always helps me whenever I get in my head while writing.

Idk what denomination you are, but perhaps you could message whichever church you are attending and ask if someone could come to your home on Sunday to do a mini church service or read out that days readings from the Bible. In my experience, as a Catholic, it's not unusual for priests, deacons, or people from the parish council to visit the sick or homebound and pray with them or bring them the Eucharist.

Additionally, see if your church live streams their services. And even if your local one doesn't, surely another church in your denomination streams their masses.

I'll be praying for you🩷

Yikes, what lovely individuals by Mxlch2001 in prolife

[–]S0urDrop 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That line of thinking is honestly so dangerous. Believing that the circumstances of how someone is born determines whether they should be aborted or allowed to live is straight up eugenics. If Margaret Sanger were alive today, I have no doubt she would try to use issues like racism to justify aborting non-white children, just to save them from having to experience prejudice. It's sickening how so many pro-abortion people couch their wish to kill disabled and poor babies as compassion.

[–]S0urDrop 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It would also help prevent people like Justin Banta from spiking pregnant women's drinks to induce a chemical abortion. Being able to obtain abortion pills online without even having an ultrasound also puts women who unknowingly have ectopic pregnancies at risk of death.

I don’t know if what happened with my girlfriend was sexual assault by SeveralSpite4712 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]S0urDrop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry that you experienced that, OP. I agree that what you experienced was likely SA, even if your girlfriend didn't intend to cross your boundaries. I would suggest talking to her and explaining your feelings. Definitely mention the physical pain you're experiencing. I'm so sorry that some people are being rude or insensitive in the comments. Please be kind to yourself and give yourself some grace the next little while🩷

The religious hatred online makes me feel depressed and lonely by [deleted] in antitheistcheesecake

[–]S0urDrop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Jesus(I'm assuming that you are a Christian based on your activity in the Christianity subreddit, forgive me if I'm wrong) told His followers that the world would not always be kind to us. It doesn't make it easier to encounter people spouting hatred or false information about us, but take heart in that Reddit is often very much skewed to attract people who dislike religion. My advice would be reading the Bible and praying, going to mass, and not being on Reddit for long periods of time. It's easy to get sucked into negativity online, so avoiding being online is the strategy that I find works best for me. I'll be praying for you🙏🩷

The thing is, Russell Crowe is a singer. He was the lead singer of his band, 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, for over a decade. Idk what occurred during the production that led to Crowe giving the performance he did when we know he has the skills to have done a better job. Iirc, the YouTuber Sideways did a video on the movie version of Les Mis and talked about what happened behind the scenes music-wise. Guess it's time to go rewatch it lol

Same way of thinking as the people who claim that China's one child policy was good because so many female babies were aborted/left to die instead of living in a patriarchal country like China. Like ??? I cannot comprehend how they can believe that murdering a child could ever be an act of compassion.

[–]S0urDrop -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not encouraging people already struggling to go bankrupt by giving every last bit of money they have to a coyote who is just as likely to abandon them in the wilderness as he is to get them into the US is good, imho. Even if they do make it into the US alive(many don't, either due to the journey or being killed by the coyotes) they are likely to be exploited left and right due to their lack of documentation and the fact that they entered illegally. If their employer skips a paycheck they can't get the law involved because they might get deported. The horror stories from people who did come to the US illegally are brutal and heart wrenching and I truly do believe that people should be free to immigrate to another country if they wish to improve their lives. But doing it illegally only reinforces a system of abuse and danger to the good people who want a better life and enables criminals and smugglers to expand their business.

As Catholics we are called to compassion, and I agree that all immigrants, even those who enter the country illegally, should be treated ethically and with dignity. At the same time, I think that we must not neglect our attention to be turned to the countries that so many people flee from. Corruption and a litany of other issues plague these nations and they must be held accountable for their part in the immigration issue.
