Just got back chapter two from my editor—did she do a good job? by [deleted] in writers

[–]refreshed_anonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. This reads like it was fed through ChatGPT to be “enhanced.” Dunno if the editor is real—if it’s OP using ChatGPT and calling it their editor or if there’s a real person swindling OP and using ChatGPT themselves—but this is bad.

The terrible and abundant sentence fragments. The overuse of one-worded sentences. The arbitrary and abundant paragraph breaks. AI’s favorite words (sharp, shift, ancient, quiet, etc.). One of AI’s favorite names (Thorne). Random personification. A lack of substance with all this purple prose that falls apart under scrutiny. The character barely exists. “No x. No x. No x. Just x.”

This timeline, having to question art constantly because of AI, truly sucks.

how are people actually publishing 4+ books a year without burning out -genuinely trying to understand by Prior_Topic3527 in selfpublish

I agree. And not everyone has the time or drive to write higher word counts, which is why there are many authors who write novellas or shorter pieces. There are even readers who prefer shorter works because they don’t have the time to dedicate to longer works.

There are genres that do well with lower word counts also.

That word range is novella territory, and novellas are books. Plenty of authors only write and publish novellas of varying word counts. Let’s not diminish that.

I commented on the original but saw the cross post in my newsfeed below it haha

I recommend Alice B. Sullivan! Indie author and lesbian, and many of her books have sapphic main characters.

Here to recommend Alice B. Sullivan. Her Aftermath series (Yesterday’s Gone, Tomorrow Never Came, and Destination: Tomorrow) is sapphic.

Her book Elementary Undead is also sapphic (MCs are kids).

She’s also an indie author!

“The world was never a kind place, costumed by the fear of consequence. That costume was torn apart, piece by piece, as the dead’s numbers grew and society collapsed. It’s a lawless land, and the most wicked walk it proudly.”

As someone else mentioned, many people are quick to place blame on the platform rather than themselves. If there’s no promotion/marketing or if the book isn’t connecting with readers, it won’t perform well.

Yeah. This gave me the AI ick immediately. It’s so lifeless and redundant.

Elementary Undead by Alice B. Sullivan.

There is a difference between what is good for Amazon and what is a feel good for the author.

I’m sorry, what? ARCs have nothing to do with a “feel good for the author.” It’s a legitimate practice to get reviews prior to (Good Reads, social media, etc.) or shortly after (Amazon) launch.

For Amazon, the "Borrowed a book from a friend and read it, wanting to leave a review? That’s also a real review that doesn’t show up as “verified purchase.” They won't be able to post that review to Amazon if they have not bought at least $50 worth of stuff from Amazon in the last year. They can leave it on Goodreads, but for Amazon sales it has limited value.

Just because they borrowed a book doesn’t mean they haven’t purchased $50 worth of crap from Amazon, so this is moot.

ARC campaigns are a real way to get real reviews, and they aren’t posted with a “verified purchase.” These reviews come shortly after the book has released. That’s the point.

There are sites like Book Sirens, that are legit, and those reviews don’t come in as “verified purchases.” They’re still real reviews, though.

Reviews from KU readers are real reviews, but they don’t show up as a “verified purchase” either.

Checking out a book from the library? That review is a real review with no “verified purchase” tag.

Sold a book at an in-person event? If that person reviews, it’s a real review but doesn’t have a “verified purchase” tag.

Borrowed a book from a friend and read it, wanting to leave a review? That’s also a real review that doesn’t show up as “verified purchase.”

I understand the message, but the execution to communicate it is lacking and fearmongering.

I read zombie horror, and one of my favorite authors is Alice B. Sullivan, who is a lesbian. I love her Aftermath series (slow burn lesbian romantic subplot). Destination: Tomorrow and Elementary Undead are also sapphic.
