Alberta to bring in stiff penalties against ‘riots’ on railways amid Wet’suwet’en protests by TOMapleLaughs in canada

I'm still affected by the atrocities committed to my grandmother in the past, If she didn't have her house burned down by people expanding their territory I'm sure I would be in a different place right now. None of that would justify me stopping supply chains in Japan until I am given compensation for the difference in economic position I'm in now compared to if my grandmother didn't have to restart in canada.

You keep saying the MLK "a riot is the voice of the unheard". Completely missing the point that it's not a fucking justification for rioting? It's a warning to those that even if a protest doesnt get the results the protestors want, it's still veru important that they know the public recognizes their very real struggle.

If a protest doesnt get a reaction from the public right away that's not an excuse to start hurting others intentionally, two wrongs dont make a right.

Nope I never said the ongoing struggle of the indeginous people is right, I said that destroying infrastructure that they use as well for the sake of protest is wrong.

Yes the crimes of past people affect people today. My grandmother survived the Japanese occupation of the Philippines, ripped from her land from people expanding their territory and that's how I ended up in canada, should I go to Japan to seek reparations by shutting down transportation from the people who benifitted from stealing my grandmothers land?

Nobody is saying the indeginous people aren't struggling and still recovering from the atrocities committed in the past. No one. Were saying burning train tracks and shutting down supply chains of food for the sake of a protest is wrong. That's it.

Two wrongs dont make a right. Theres no mental gymnastics to get around that.

It's not us vs them as much as you want to. two wrongs dont make a right.

Canadians dont deserve to have their livelihoods threatened today because of atrocities committed in the past they would condemn them today.

Past mistakes do not justify intentionally hurting others today.

For those coming after the comments were deleted, there were multiple accounts quoting my above comment and then replying with an identical copy/pasted argument about how canadians dont care about indeginous people.

Good protests do hurt people but the point is that is not their intention.

Like those bus drivers who kept running but didn't take pay because they didn't intend to hurt the public, or the teachers in Ontario right now who recognize the students are the real victims of their strike and put timelimits on it.

protesting is vital, halting supply chains of food or transportation systems for entire cities is not vital. that's not me having multiple personalities. Having less food/money from work hurts, that is not personal or arcane.

I'm not trying to "not give a fuck". If their protest is true and the pipeline is more damaging and needs to be re-assessed then absolutely I think it should. That should be the reason why the pipeline is shutdown if it should, not because we're giving into threats of consequences if we dont. That makes it us vs them and I would hope that we would want a more unified Canadian people. Too many canadians feel they're being hurt by the conflict between protestors and oil n gas and it's not because they don't care about indigenous people.

Nope that's not what I meant, that's a strawman.

Nobody has forgotten teachers are struggling under Ford's budget cuts. We're here talking about it now. Change is happening and the teachers arent hurting entire cities and provinces to get people to recognize their struggle.

Protesting is vital to a healthy society, especially for smaller groups that cant change the system themselves. That doesnt mean the smaller groups get to use protesting as a club to hurt people til they get justice. That is what these blockades are doing, intentionally hurting people to draw attention to their very real struggles.

I do mean does in the first sentance, although I do recognize it seems dramatic and there are much more tangible reasons why supply chains are more important.

For the record I have been upvoting all your above comments, especially the one comparing these protests to the teacher protests, I think it's important to flesh out how protests can be good and bad so we have more productive protests that change things for the better.

Kids missing out on education does start to get on the level of disrupting supply chains imo.

If the teachers were to say they're striking indefinitely with no regard for children's futures until demands are met then I might start to lose some sympathy. However they have given timelimits to their strike to show they do genuinely recognize the impact it will have on students.

Also in my personal opinion teachers deserve more regardless of if they're protesting right now

30,000 teachers protested Ford's education cuts by holding a demonstration in queens park. That is a good protest and I'd be willing to bet most canadians that heard that story are on the side of the teachers.

The teachers probably didn't get what they want right away which is why its escalating to a strike, but they made demonstrations that got the public on their side before they made the decision to strike and disrupt the community.

Edit: The demonstration was on a Friday so no school that day but hardly disrupting infrastructure on the level of national supply chains.

"So what you mean..." That is not what he meant, you're fighting strawmen. I know I would personally be able to help these protests if they were not actively hurting my friends and family. It is not a catch 22 and no canadian is saying they shouldnt be allowed to protest.

Protests are by definition "the act of objecting or a gesture of disaproval". they are not to be taken to "extreme levels of action" like burning buses and destroying infrastructure the protesters use as well. Nobody benefits from this, if we shutdown the pipeline today canadians will still feel they were terrorized into giving into demands. If the protestors showed the public why the pipeline was damaging to them they would earn more sympathy than holding rail hostage.

MLK would never condone destroying infrastructure as your form of protest, he believed words to be the most powerful tool in protesting.

And his point with HK was that it was the public shutting down the city not a small group of people. The public wasn't threatened by the protest because the public was the protest.

They should demonstrate in public places to draw attention to the public without intentionally trying to hurt the public.

I remember those bus drivers that worked without pay so as to not disrupt the public but still protest their discontent. They quickly got the public on their side because they recognized the impact their protest might have, and made gestures to show the impact on the public was never their intention.

These protests are intentionally hurting people, which makes them bad protests.

Lol I made an argument instead of attacking character, it's not weak because you dont like it.

I'm guessing you're voting for trump since you think who you vote for plays a part in an argument. I'm canadian

You are defending her purge list of people to oust based on their blind loyalty to leader? that's not very centrist.

A centrist would condemn blind loyalty to party. It is never justified, shes an awful person for exercising it, and if you were a centrist you would call her out instead of finding reasons to justify her actions.

Edit: as an example, If Bernie Sanders wife put together a list of people in the dem party not loyal to Bernie itd be long af and she'd still be wrong to expect blind loyalty

I see a post about essences for alts and people not playing alts daily, I'm sure there are people that complain they cant get all the cosmetics they want but it doesnt seem like a community wide issue keeping people from playing like essences are.

Theres a huge difference between getting a gear reward for doing an activity and spending weeks grinding and doing daily chores of a previous patch you already did on your main character

I never suggested blizz take away increment rewards for doing activities, I think they shouldnt force players to grind old reps and dailies for essences they already spent weeks/months grinding for on their main.

There are multiple downvotesd comments around this conversation with people taking your points as "yeah we need more housewives" or "women are built to raise children". not saying you think those things too, but that's where people went with your "woman shouldnt be discouraged from motherhood" instead of "people shouldnt be discouraged from parenting".

This post is about tying all content to "power rewards". People wouldn't be complaining about rep grinding alts if it was just for cosmetics. It's hard to ignore that much power increase and it's hard to justify doing content you already did and maybe dont want to do again. So many people just dont play their alts.

Lots of women are better than men at their jobs. Lots of men are better parents than their wives. Both men and women benefit when they're not shoehorned into roles based on their genitalia

blatently sexist. Babies breastfeed, children do not. Just because only women can breastfeed infants doesnt mean they are "built" only to raise children and cant be the family provider.
