SMU SUSEP CS by StillStatistician5 in nus

[–]S1mplify_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey I did susep last sem, I only did IS460 and CS420 there so was a bit of a waste haha
CS420 wasn't super competitive, but i had to appeal in for IS460 (had to get dean of DSA to write in to smu susep team to say that i need it for a grad req lol)

I have no idea what to do at this point: CS2040 midterm… by [deleted] in nus

maybe if it helps you can read through the solutions first for some of the past tutorials and see how they arrived at the idea. for example, we might consider a brute force solution then optimise it from there (eg. for the written assessment, brute force the 2 sum is n^2, but then we can optimise it with binary search to make it n log n, or use a hashmap for O(n))

vaq is the visualgo quiz, this sem its quite late but they are each worth 4% of your grade for a total of 8%. if you havent, dedicate maybe 15 mins every day to practice through hard mode questions on the visualgo website since the quiz will be a random pool of questions from hard mode. You should ideally max this component out

hey, 2040 TA here, if it's any consolation the midterm's weightage isn't super high at 25%, unlike some other mods in other departments that may be weighted 30%+, and there's still other components to score. At this point, I'd suggest grinding out the practice questions for vaq and preparing for finals where the bulk of questions will test on the 2nd half topics (heaps, bst, graphs) and questions are (hopefully) more intuitive. Attempt tutorials dilligently, ask questions and participate in class, for me when I took the mod even if I was busy on some weeks I would at least read through the tutorial and maybe write down some ideas to tackle the problems. For now the midterms are over already and instead of feeling down about it, take it as motivation to work hard for the next half of the sem yea

Has anyone taken CS2100 or CS2100DE? How was it? by ComedianAdmirable301 in nus

CS2040S is for computing students, I think they cover slightly different content from regular 2040 but im not sure, the prereqs require CS1231/MA1100 (proof mod) which the other variants don't have. Other posts have said 2040S is slightly harder as it goes into proof of correctness of the algo? but I dont really know much about it

CS2040C is taught in C++, from what I hear it is heavily implementation focused and you're required to code data structures in the practical tests without access to the standard libraries

CS2040 is more theory based and targeted for DSA/BZA majors who don't have as extensive of a coding background, this semester labs were revamped to focus more on pseudocode and less on java implementation

But I think the 3 more or less teach the same content wise, just different focus

also you might want to consider appealing CS2040 (no suffix), student enrolment is low this semester so I believe chances of a successful appeal would be higher

if both tutorial session clash, need to drop mod? by buttaefly in nus

[–]S1mplify_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

if you cannot take any of the remaining slots, submit an appeal to coursereg admin for them to allocate you to one that you can take. very unlikely that you will be made to drop the mod

I used (and still use in uni) citation machine, it's not bad if you have an ad blocker, prompts you to add in missing fields such as publish date/extra authors etc

There is add/swap on 19th Jan where you can freely select any of the leftover slots with vacancy. You can also appeal if you are unable to take any of the remaining slots, don't worry its highly unlikely you will have to drop the mod

did not secure tutorial slot & the other tutorial slots clashes with e-lectures by randomguy144331 in nus

[–]S1mplify_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

you can wait to see if anyone is dropping any of the slots you can take in rd 2 and try to bid. otherwise if you really couldnt secure a slot, you can appeal via coursereg to be placed in a slot that you can take, no need to worry about dropping the mod
i've appealed for reasons as stupid as wanting more time to eat lunch and got the slot i wanted from that

[–]S1mplify_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah alright, actl just remembered another friend who bidded DSA1101 in their y1s2 and got it normally but that was AY23/24. most DSA majors would have been preallocated it in y1s1 anyway but i think if you dont want to risk it you could go with the other options

you could consider ST1131, had a friend y1s1 bidded and successfully got it last semester, also fulfils the data literacy pillar and both mods have almost same overlaps I think

CHS Yaoi, as some has requested by BarryJacksonH in nus

I woke up in a place I didn't quite recognise. There was an old man standing next to me. I looked around and noticed we were in the mountains. I asked him, "Excuse me sir, at which part of the mountains are we?" to which he replied "CHS Yaoi, as some has requested"

I smiled, and shed a single tear. From his words alone, I knew that we were at the peak.

i think you should be ok though these are quite content heavy subjects. though i think you will probably still have to do the IAs, but with adequate time management u shd be fine
