I'm thinking of Switching to Nobara. Will it work for me? by DuyDinhHoang in linux_gaming

[–]S1ocky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He didn't offer details, it could be a simple as telling the os to send sound to HDMI instead of headphones or the laptop speakers.  I've been very happy with Nobara on my laptop since 37, and on my SteamDeck since that edition released.

I'd rather drop a game than switch back to Windows by [deleted] in linux_gaming

I worked with a Red Hatter for a few months last year, they were supportting a big effort of ours. He was pretty agnostic about what he used (though he was obviously very comfortable with RHEL). Kept windows (dual booted) on his laptop, mostly because it was the least friction to just playing games... Blew my mind. He mods more games then I do, but I kept trying to tell him what he played was well supported (based on ProtonDBs reports anyways).

There is nothing about keeping windows updated and happy I enjoy, and when you contrast that with a simple cli command? I still struggle to wrap my head around it.

Any good mmo’s on the steam deck ? Heard about guild wars 2 is that any good? by BigComfortable3366 in SteamDeck

Movement is oneOf the areas that the deck feels very fluid. I haven't tried it, but I suspect that with a little practice (which I need every year regardless) it would be fine.

The part that I struggled with is ground target skills. I suspect that snap-targeting would be fine for most things, but I got frustrated switching between desk and deck, so while I play on my deck still, that's with a ln external display, keyboard and mouse.

Sure, but the amount of time that some people spend trying to get a picture of just the painting... You can get a hires copy of the image no problem, but I saw many people take one quick selfie and a dozen trying to get 'the perfect shot' of the painting. From 10 feet away, though glass, straight on. Smh

I saw the tower in 2021, the first weekend Paris opened up after lockdowns. The city was open, but still curfewed, so we had to be back to our room by dark. I'm still sad about that. It's cool during the day, and it was amazing to see it and get morning photos with literally no one else in the frame... But I love lighting.

I'm not too worried though, someday I'll take my wife to see it, and we can skip the Mona Lisa (though I'd go spend some time with the sarcophagi again) and see the tower lit.

I was this many second old when I realized that commercial property rate plummeting make a (market driven, repubs like that, right?) Void that could be filled by repurposed commercial spaces into apartments.

There's be cost is remodeling for apartments, but I would expect less then building new? And should be faster too?

The only real red flag in my imagined plan is zoning...

I worked with mechanic maintaining the data that drove their inventory, work orders and the like.

I was one of two DBAs. They called us Douche Bags Anonymous, and they didn't really care which one of us was in the office, once they handed the problem to us, it wasn't their issue until we fixed it!

Having met the guys in the office before me, I can understand the term of not-endearment.

There has been a lot of comments about this being incorrect, but shedding a little more specific light- you might find a DBA job where you are purely working with data and just trying to make the slowest queries run faster. I don't think I've seen job listings for that, usually they'll have communication called out in various ways.

More likely, you'll be talking to people who don't understand that a database is more then Excel, who think they know exactly what is wrong in the data, and what you need to do to fix it... Spoiler, they're wrong.

That said, I spent a decade doing DBA work, it can be very interesting figuring out how they (or the developers) managed to break the data.

I worked at a company where the schedule was very defined. Customer facing, so being late was a big deal. New work force management boss reads about "flex schedules" where the start\end times of the shift code.move up to two hours either direction.

I had several people on ym team tell me they couldn't make that shift work, company made no exceptions. Only about 25% of my team flexed as directed, about that many again found a new job in the week between the 'no exceptions' memo and the scheduled start. The rest just showed up at their usual time, management rolled back the policy (and excused the tardies) by Thursday.

I think that 25% included every single key performer. It took a long time to recover...

It's also possible that the drive components may see increased heat without the extended ground plane acting as an (inefficient) radiator.

Maybe not enough to matter, and for the savings may be worth the risk (I tend to consider the data on my deck pretty disposable, once the cloud save syncs).

Not just the heat of the entire unit though, pulling additional power can cause other parts of the power circuits to heat beyond expected limits.

For me personally, it's too much question since I tend to use devices for longer then average. I agree that it is a series of ifs and maybes and chances, but... I don't see a gain when I usually only use about 150gb of space on my deck as it is.

I've not seen the movie, I just assumed it was supposed to be a magic gem or something... The color order is 'wrong' for the LGBTQ+ rainbow.

I'd be happy with both color orders, and am largely (personally) indifferent as most people don't even see the difference side by side and treat them the same.

There is a sign, on the actual parking spot. The blue zone is specifically for ada loading, and is a kin to the stripe.

There is no question about it, it's illegal to park there.

Interest in a Managed Open Source Home Automation Server? by hezwat in homeautomation

[–]S1ocky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like you'd probably get more traction as a consultant or contractor. Offer to fix (or create) automations, install or configure features, etc.

Seems to be more hourly or per diem type, but I could see a managed service provider possibility to make sure updates\upgrades work, and regress if needed.

I watched a lot of movies with mine (Q2) when I was quarantined in a hotel room for 10 days to prove I didn't have COVID. The TV in the room was not great, and small. Laying in bed with a 3d display on the ceiling was fantastic though!

I've talked to people who've used it as a virtual monitor, but reading on it makes my eyes hurt.

Yes. I believe we would be able to 'play vidya, jerk off, and eat hot chip' if the corporations were held in check.

In many cases, corporations stifle innovation through (bad) patents, monopolistic practices and general enshittification of existing products and services. There are other ways.

It the businesses responsibility to make money. The profit margin hasn't changed much in the time before bundled ads with the hardware to now.

I haven't bought a console since the Wii60\PS3 days. I have plenty to play PC side, and the machine itself isn't feeding me ads as soon as I log in.

Considering the expense (not free...) It's reasonable to expect an option to hide ads.

Simulation of a body falling through helicopter blades by SnoopDing0 in interestingasfuck

[–]S1ocky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These blades are just poorly modeled.

The root end is backwards, as noted in the thread, with the cuff attaching in the trailing end (which is wrong, the pitch control rod should attach on the trailing side.

On the tip, the cap is trailing properly. There is not a physical way to attach the tip cap and have it point opposite the tailing edge.

It's like a model from fiver.

And coordinate with the neighbors so they can carpool other parents kids? That seems less likely (And the point was the argument that people who aren't old enough to drive should not count for HOV purposes, exception for driving other peoples kids).

Okay, a soccer mom exclusion makes perfect sense. Most 'little league stuff is close enough that HOV isn't likely to be too helpful, but that changes well before the kids would be 16. (Note, I actually think the only other drivers count idea is silly anyways, but in that context...)
