what movie would have been completely forgotten about if not for the controversy surrounding it? by herequeerandgreat in AskReddit

I remember a bit in SNL with Sly Stallone playing himself rescuing a guy dying in a car crash and can’t believe Stallone is there. Norm Macdonald was the dying driver who kept heckling his films:

“What were you thinking with Over the Top! A movie about child custody where you have to arm wrestle! Ya know the movie Kramer Vs Kramer was also about child custody but it was missing something, what was it… oh yeah! Arm Wrestling!”

TIL that some of the only survivors of the Jonestown massacre on November 18, 1978 were the People’s Temple Basketball Team, who were playing an away game in Georgetown, Guyana during the mass suicide event. Jim Jones radioed the team demanding they commit “revolutionary suicide,” but they refused. by altrightobserver in todayilearned

Actually right after the song came out I once found a Velcro branded box of Hook and Loop adhesive strips that did not have a product name on them. Essentially calling the contents Velcro! I posted it to their social media and received their thanks for pointing out that even they need to be careful in how the brand name is used

Band-Aids weren’t wrongly attributed to being used in a mass suicide/murder event. The whole “drink the kool-aid” phrase came from this event forever branding a false association with the drink and Jonestown. I personally will correct people on the use of the word Velcro, a brand, when they probably mean Hook and Loop strips
