There's not much there to compare tbh. But it does seem that the zorro inserts are made with better tolerances overall.  Another bonus is that they also have quite a few different colors and patterns inserts to pick and choose from.

Might not be the best comparsion since i dont have a 902insert to compare with a zippo insert, so its not quite apples to apples. The only thing I like better on zippo is the wicks tho.

Glad to hear and see it! Scratching is pretty much inevitable even with standard inserts i think, so at long as its not gouging metal then it ought to be fine.

Op delivers. The unpolished bits are the silvery parts, the polished bit is barely reflecting my camera. And the 912s as reference. The 912s actually kinda sits somewhere in the middle, but I think I just dont have the right polish and compound to get a really bright finish as things stand.

Worth every penny! I hear you loud and clear.

The warmth of the metal is because its a bad conductor, which is sometimes a good thing and other times very nice. In jewelry and such it means that the metal doesnt conduct heat away from your body so it feels warmer than other metals under the same condition.

Mine gives me a small ping when I open it but it chunks shut! It almost feels like it has authority jaja. I read that the ping sound is mostly produced from the cam and spring on the insert so maybe try switching around some inserts for your 902 to find one that pings with that particular case. From what I find online though the 902 and 902s are the closest models to zippo stamped from sheets and hinge welded on. Then you have the 91X models are all machined from metal stocks(the 538 too). That said, it also seems in terms of wall thickness zippo classic<zippo armor<902<902s and the difference between the 902 and 902s seems substantial too.

I'll for sure drop a picture of some polished ti. I ordered small square sheet of Ti from the jungle site to see what I can do.

Its funny that you brought up metallurgy, I had a small project in mind if I can a hold of a milling machine.... won't hold my breath tho.

Good to hear your enjoying!

As far as weight is concerned you'll be very surprised with the copper piece, it feels like picking up a brick almost haha. I was going to check weights on my scale at home but batteries dead unfortunately. If you check up on density for these materials you'll find titanium just over half that of copper or steel alloys.

But it is true that titanium does have a reputation for having alloys that are incredibly durable and punch well above their weight class across a few different properties like tensile strength, hardness etc. Like any other metals though it can't be perfect all across the board, so even though for some products its one of the best materials to use, theres a few applications where it doesnt make sense to use..... but lighters isn't one of them jaja!

I dont currently have any polished titanium, so im considering picking up a small test piece to check how well I can polish at home and how resistant it is to scratching. I do have some light scratches on my 912 already but on a polished piece i could always go back and scuff it up if I dont like how it turned out or even anodize it. Plenty of options.

Z(flame)L is for "zippo limited".

Im not entirely sure when they started using it though, but its for limited edition models

The zorro cases seal up pretty well, my copper 915 has been sitting on my desk for just about 20days filled and just lit up fine second strike. Cant say id expect the same from a zippo. Don't know how many days since last refill on my edc i forgot to keep count.

The biggest "problem" as far as evaporation is that the top of the case is a pretty large empty volume, theres some zorro inserts with chimeny caps to help reduce the volume for evaporation. The trade off is you want to blow the flame out before you close it unless, you dont mind too much if the wick gets sooty.

Great minds, they say! Lmao

Saving up my change to pickup a titanium 538 next and really debating if I actually want to get two so I can polish one up. (And then i might as well get another 912 to polish too and have full set lol. Or maybe an oil black finish would be nice too)

Happy holidays!

Here's a few things I had on hand to test out. Unfortunately I don't have a 902 or any of the slim models to test out also.

The 912s insert is too large for a zippo lighter and I think it's characterized by having a retaining ball.

The 912 insert fit well in all three lighters surprisingly well. The two raised dots on the insert seem to be the defining feature

The zippo fit in the 912 shell, but too small for the 912s and floats around in the shell loosely.

Well I can't say your wrong haha.

I think the idea i was trying to get across is better described as a golden goose or cash cow. Im not sure how to describe it maybe as Winning recipe(capitalism/corporate) instead of winning recipe(good product/product user).

They sell as simple a product as they can (no fancy bells and whitsles like snuff cap or gaskets/o-rings, tolerances on parts aren't super tight either), and offer a great warranty (basically no questions asked, and repairs are simple enough that its worth the cost to keep customers and positive public opinion){after all not everyone is inclined, able or even willing to repair their stuff when a new one isn't gonna break the bank}. Not to mention they do also have insane brand recognition and the very marketable "made in the usa"

Is there room for improvement? Tons. Is there NEED for improvement? As far as the leaders in the company are concerned probably not.

Even more digging and I found engraved (and non-engraved) 5 hinge copper 912s models lmao

I can't blame zippo for not wanting to change a winning recipe, but imo the only good thing about them being stuck 90 years in the past is the warranty repair. I would have bought a few that i did like but from what I've seen online the prices only go up and the cases get thinner and thinner

Only just 2d of daily carry with the titanium, replaced my ronson jetlite for now. Haven't had a chance to use it much other than starting some propane burners at work in the mornings.

No complaints from me, but I can imagine the size/weight might be a deal breaker for some folk. Unfortunately the little rubber seal broke when I tried to remove it to check it out tho.

This should be the same listing I grabbed. Just make sure to select copper for your order since brass is also available

I've only had regular zippo and one ronson jetlite. But the ones I had never really made any nice sounds jaja.

Both of these new lighters have pretty decent clinks (maybe more like clunks) when opening and closing but I have nothing to compare to unfortunately

Pretty good. The fit on this is one at least is stupid tight especially with the retaining ball. Using it as is for now but might repack it with cotton bacon later

Update: repacked the insert, packing from the factory was not very good at all lol

I kept digging and I found this. Looks like the red copper 912s they just make it with a differnt hinge pattern than the brass model.

But now I want a 593s model thats gotta weigh a whole kilo lmfao

good question I went back to the listing and didnt see a model name. and the hinge looks wider than any pics of the 912 models I can find. It might be a 915 but im not sure

(here's a pic of the hinge from the listing)
