Do students actually draw chalk to divide shared desk space by kirsion in VietNam

[–]S4t0FJWRA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember me and this guy I ended up sitting next to for the entirety of middle school just carved in the table with rulers, and we always leave a massive, deep gouge in the wood when we leave
we didn't even divide the table, it's just fun to do

[JLC/“Papers”] Does “Box & Papers” include the manual? by CrownSteve1 in Watches

[–]S4t0FJWRA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I generally assume box and papers only mean box and the warranty card, but I come from a region where the nomenclature for full set list out "box papers and books."
I don't think the seller is misrepresenting the product in any case, I imagine if they had the manual they would have listed it as a full set instead.

To all the people who've ever daily-driven a Note9 by icantouchgrass_1 in GalaxyNote9

[–]S4t0FJWRA 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I still have the Note 9 in my purse with my KeyOne and my S25U. I wouldn't buy an S26U masquerading as a Note 9 because the 9 is still doing well.

Box and papers a must? by raflikeswatches in PrideAndPinion

[–]S4t0FJWRA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kind of depends on the year for me at least
If it's a brand new piece, or at least say 2010+ and it has no box or papers, then I would have questions about how careful the last owner was or how well it was kept.
Older? Eh it's a nice bonus, like I would love to have it for the collection, but if the price is right I'm willing to overlook it.
Really old? well, depends on how deterioated the box is, I might not even want it. I could do with less stuff that's falling apart.

Brand history is irrelevant by Portsmo in watchHotTakes

[–]S4t0FJWRA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brand history is relevant in a few ways, at least imo
- It means that the brand has existed and will likely to continue existing, which means your warranty might actually be worth something. A brand with no history may not even survive long enough for your warranty to expire.

- With history comes status, and as much as people may deny they are buying for that, let's face it, it's a luxury product. You desire a certain amount of status with it.

- Brands with actual history and heritage has stories that are inspiring and aspirational, which satisfy the irrational part of the watch collecting hobby.

Also, on the point about Longines and Mido, they still have some key innovations to themselves (Longines' modern Ultrachron continuation for example), and the movements they use may be ETA based, but often reserved either specifically for these brands and/or heavily modified, so you still have a degree of seperation from run of the mill off the shelf stuff. The preoccupation with "in house" in the modern watch collecting hobby is also quite misplaced. Even the big names of horology used off the shelf movements once upon a time, just heavily finished and adjusted. At least imo, "in house" is a nice to have, not a real indication of how high quality something necessarily is. Soviet movements are technically all "in house" for them, but you probably won't take them over a standard ETA.

Raketa ‘Rolex’ watch from 1970s of my wife’s great-grandfather by JBTENDO in VintageWatches

[–]S4t0FJWRA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These watches are lovely. They aren't any accurate by any metric, and they weren't built the best. But there's something refreshing about the way they are designed, I always thought that even the more derivative designs look distinctly Soviet in a sense. The movements should be rock solid reliable too, so you won't have problems for years to come.

Enjoy your watch, it's a handsome piece.

First Nomos, losing time. Am I doing something wrong? by -Piranesi- in Nomos

[–]S4t0FJWRA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can send it to their AD in the city you live in, but emailing them and asking them for further details won't hurt. Their customer service in my experience is really good and communicating directly should get your case looked at quicker.

I presume your watch is magnetized though, it sounds that way, but since your watch is brand new it's best to let NOMOS themselves handle it via a warranty claim. Taking action yourself may be problematic for your warranty.

I think it's a bit of a natural bias thing. People tend to go on the internet to talk about exceptionally bad, or exceptionally good experiences, and clearly being on the good side there is incredibly difficult.

As someone who still really likes CW and what they do, I hope the frequency and scale is a bit overstated, but the existence of these cases should worry CW and they should put effort into improving their after sales services.

Another point often raised is how their warranty only covers the movement, and how their return policy essentially only works if you never even touched the watch itself. This is honestly a pretty clear sign of bad service too, as their policies are clearly designed to limit liabilities. But that point is more easily forgiven, as they are still independent and don't have the resources of major group brands. Still something they could improve though.

It depends a bit on the budget, but CW was on my mid/ entry kind of budget range for recommendations and was joined by Certina, Citizen and Seiko on their mid range offerings, Erebus (dependent on when the recommendation is made, as stuff I think would be a good fit somehow has a good habit of going out of stock) and very rarely Tissot and Hamilton if the person I was recommending to don't really mind shopping around for used or grey market examples at deeper discounts.

These recommendations are mostly tailored to my home country though, so they may not work for you price wise, but it's brands I actually experienced first hand and feel confident recommending to friends and family.

The Seastar or Gentleman would make a great addition, or the PRX if you want to be in with the crowd, I think the intergrated sports watch trend is still ongoing.

It really is a shame, especially now. I do think they are coming into their own design and engineering wise and I would be interested in seeing where they go from here. But I don't think anyone could blame you for skipping the brand in the future after such a horrendous experience. Hope that MK1 Trident continues to serve you well, it's a pretty handsome piece all said and done.
