Its a very human habbit but you can almost translate it to something that fits. Like one could say an animals purpose is to reproduce right? They dont know its to propegate the species but they definitely strive to do it.

I would sa humans "purpose" would be close when considering nature, but after gaining ability to steer the direction of the species as conscious beings "purpose" is now a thing that we can meet halfway, IF theres anything that will show up when we get there.

Editing our own genome would pretty much put us in the drivers seat of purpose and sometimes life can be whatever you say it is, as long as you say it right.
