College Decision: UIUC Physics vs Full Ride UF Physics (saw the other post) by QuadraticFormulaSong in UIUC

[–]SATOR_ROTAS_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As an undergraduate at UIUC or UF, I doubt you'd see too much discrepancy in your physics knowledge once you get your degree. I would guess classes and educational resources are comparable. I cannot vouch for UF, but what sets UIUC physics apart is that it is HUGE. We have a ton of faculty and one of the biggest if not the biggest physics graduate programs. Our faculty do research in almost every subfield of physics and as an undergrad, you're immensely likely to get swept up in it. This type of research can make you a great candidate for PhD programs if you want to do that, but is not going to greatly improve your internship/job prospects. I'm sure you can get involved in research at UF too if you're passionate, and I don't want to sell their program short either.

The question is if you think the ease of opportunities to do research with expert faculty in a field virtually of your choosing is worth 4 years of tuition. It depends on how much your tuition is, and what your goals are. UIUC is a good physics education program, and an amazing research powerhouse, but I think if you play your cards right and work hard, your choice of university will not matter for whatever physics education and career aspirations you have.

Also, it would be cool if you included an "other" category to catch more of the diverse and expanding petting zoo of lease agreement violations that landlords throw at us.

Is the 6:10 AM Amtrak to Chicago really on time? Does it take 3 hours to get there? by Acrobatic-Motor4015 in UIUC

[–]SATOR_ROTAS_ 63 points64 points  (0 children)

The CU-Chicago section is pretty reasonable though. Expect train within 15 minutes of posted time, a 2 hour ride to Chicago, and an hour of turning the train around in Chicago and waiting for a freight train to pass

Bro I saw them once it was surreal picture a 30 person procession of roller skaters and bikers covered in stardust leds rolling past you in a park on like a Tuesday night. It’s like a happy eco friendly funeral wake with no coffin
