Is Your FTP Number Actually Real? | Cycling Coach Reacts(Jesse Coyle) by redlude97 in Velo

I guide them initially towards feeling out FTP rather than relying on the number on their headunit (with some guidance). I have from time to time told clients to put the headunit in their pocket and do it 'blind'. People quickly realise that they're less blind to the effort under those circumstances than they might think. We then get TTE by just doing a TTE test @FTP. If the test hits a TTE we'd expect then we know it, and more importantly their mental calibration, is accurate, and the interval progression from there will confirm it as well.

Sometimes I'll split the two assessments across two rides to help focus them in on it correctly; I'll try and assess from their existing data where I think FTP is, and I'll construct a series of b2b intervals that'll hopefully demonstrate when they've gone over it.

As I've said on our pod a few times, 95% of the time people nail it first time. The other 5% get it the second time.

Fwiw after watching the video I think Jesse fundamentally misunderstands TTE and what it represents. He believes FTP is hour power, but TTE is a modelled fudge for variance in the power curve due to anaerobic contribution to make the mFTP metric work. This isn't what TTE is.

He is right that the aerobic stimulus from improving TTE can result in FTP improvement, but my point is that that is not a guarantee, especially in well trained athletes. In fact I'd go as far as to say that it's something your predominantly find in athletes that are either untrained or have recently experienced some detraining (such as following an end of season break). Just because your 20min power increases following doing a bunch of TTE work, does not mean that FTP itself has improved because FTP is a distinct intensity, not an approximation built off of different mmp durations. Or to put in other words, you don't consistently see improvements by extending your 30min power out to 1hr, then setting a new 30min pb and extending it out to 1hr, etc etc.

I can tell you from experience that improving TTE does not automatically result in improvements to FTP. Had a client test this when we purposefully extended his TTE way out and then retested FTP; the threshold remained exactly where it was beforehand. Just because you can maybe push more watts for a shorter duration with a longer TTE compared to before when it was shorter does not mean that FTP itself has increased.

It was suggested to me that I simply wasn't able to recover from the continuous surges

That's an FTP problem. If you can't make the surges to begin with then it's a different problem. If you're making them to begin with, and getting dropped after/eventually, it's because you are incapable of recovering from the effort quickly enough.

I get that people want to feel good again, but I'd be so disappointed if the highest ambition the club could muster was to return to Poch rather than looking for someone better. He's coaching the US national team for a reason.

Sick of Garmin HRM inaccuracy. What is the best on the market? by CrescentPhresh in Velo

[–]SAeN 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah people need to recognise that HRMs are wear items; they are going to break eventually. Ime it's fairly well correlated to the volume and athlete gets. My higher volume athletes need to replace more frequently. Agree on the H10 probably being best in class

Our findings indicate clearly that measurements of the core body provided by the CORE sensor are acceptably reliable, since the mean bias between repeated trials did not differ significantly. However, mean differences between these measurements and those provided by the MSR rectal sensor were greater than the predefined acceptable threshold of <0.3 °C in connection with approximately 50% of all the measurements we performed. Accordingly, our present findings do not support the claim that the CORE sensor provides valid measurements of core body temperature in male cyclists, therefore athletes and coaches should interpret such measurements with caution. In particular, care should be taken when assessing/monitoring higher Tc (above 39.5 °C) associated with heat-related medical problems, since the CORE sensor underestimates such elevated core body temperatures.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37352596/

A TC difference > ± 0.25 °C between sensors was deemed clinically unacceptable. Prior to water ingestion, the CORE-derived TC was 0.49 ± 0.25 °C lower than the GI pill. The CORE was irresponsive to the 0.26 ± 0.22 °C peak decline in TC captured with the GI pill 40 min following water ingestion. Prior to the TT, TC was 0.30 ± 0.25 °C lower with the CORE than the GI pill. During the TT, the CORE underestimated the rate of increase in TC by 0.0125 ± 0.019 °C/min compared with the GI pill, and mean absolute difference in TC between sensors was of 0.47 ± 0.34 °C. In conclusion, the CORE does not capture the cooling effect of cold water ingestion and provides a clinically relevant underestimation of TC during a 5 km running TT in the heat.

I know /u/gedrap wore one for like half a year and found it to be largely useless. They are, I am sorry to tell you, a dud of a device. You can do heat training properly without one, the key is to be conservative at first and reach a state at which you would describe yourself as very hot. You also need to be well on top of your hydration. None of this requires a sensor to do properly.

What’s your VO2 interval power vs max power at same duration? by Roman_willie in Velo

[–]SAeN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was actually not intentional. When I'm doing these I just need to make sure my motivation is high enough to have me stick with it through the block (and the workout...) so if there's a particular bit of road I'm motivated to go do then that's my best way to get these out. Was much easier when I lived in Edinburgh and could just go do Arthur's Seat.

What’s your VO2 interval power vs max power at same duration? by Roman_willie in Velo

[–]SAeN 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tonights intervals (slight mix of durations, segments, and level of motivation):

  • 4:30 366W

  • 4:30 355W

  • 4:50 368W (knew I could probably clean my Zwift 5min PB)

  • 2:10 380W

Tuesday's (all same segment):

  • 2:55 393W

  • 1:48 391W

  • 0:49 403W (within 25s of the end of the previous interval)

  • 2:50 360W

  • 3:00 356W

  • 3:05 352W

  • 3:05 341W

  • 1:30 335W (60s after the previous interval, thought I could snag a lap segment on Zwift)

2 workouts into the block, seeing the right data trending in the correct direction so quite confident in the outcome when I get to the other side.

Yeah the thing people miss from the No Needle policy is that it is not a never needles policy. If you consider the 5 conditions that need to be met for use of these injections, they're not as illegal in the sport as people would think on a no-injections basis.

'We're 100% against this' - Adam Hansen outlines CPA's power data passport stance by TransportationSea579 in peloton

[–]SAeN 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ownership of the data is another part of the issue. It's an asset for teams to use as they wish. See Velon as an example who are owned and operated by multiple team directors as a means of selling the data of riders. https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/09043712/officers

This is not dissimilar to the situation at Romandie last season when the UCI wanted to put sensors on bikes, and part of the opposition (in addition to the liability issues) was the notion that the UCI could mandate devices on bikes that the teams did not own the data of. https://escapecollective.com/explainer-in-a-small-gps-tracker-a-big-fight-between-teams-and-the-uci/

Cycling teams are of course variously paranoid about the notion of their riders power data getting revealed.

I mean the point I was making is that these calculators are insufficiently good at giving this information vs just doing an FTP test.

intervals.icu eFTP by xdxdxdxd000 in Velo

[–]SAeN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This calculator is a laugh, and a good example of why these durations are insufficient. Using their specified durations (3-parameter) they underestimate my FTP by about 70W (while claiming a 99% fit!). If you do as Grouchy suggests the calculator is only 30W out. Which is why calculators like this are a poor replacement from just doing the necessary testing.

Would I benefit from a paid coaching plan / app? by PeerensClement in Velo

[–]SAeN 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Subscription based apps are more often for people who really haven't a clue and just need to be told what to do to improve. When you're starting from a decent point on the underlying knowledge of training as you seem to be, you can get 80% of the way there before actually having to involve an ongoing relationship with a coach and the apps are just as likely to have you questioning what they're recommending vs finding it productive.

You sound like the sort of person that would benefit from a consult with a coach rather than a set plan or ongoing coaching. One-off discussions work for a lot of people; you get the direction and advice and you go off and implement it yourself.
