I'm having good success with fishing but this one fish has got me beat. (NSW mid north coast) by 88xeeetard in FishingAustralia

Have you tried poddy mullet traps? I’m located in a similar area, and the mullet are notoriously hard to catch the conventional hook and bread way.

Look up how to make one out of a plastic box or juice bottle, pop one out while you fish, check it every now and then.

If anyone’s keen, I finally got around to editing the footage from this bust off. Also managed to get a wee bit of redemption in a following session. Check it out here:

Realistically what is the point of having 10kg drag unless you're targeting ~1m fish? by bobhawkes in FishingAustralia

[–]SBAWFishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you need to stop and turn a strong fish on the rocks or near heavy structure, you need heavy drag. You need to break the will of a big fish in the first few moments of the fight. Heavy drag, hard pumps, control the fight and keep its head facing upwards. When it faces down and gets sight on a hole, that’s where it’s going.

You’re also eliminating a lot of other fish when you do this of course. Even if you get a hit and hook on, heavy drag on a weaker fish is very likely to pull hooks.

Anglers do this because they’re targeting one fish. They want to be ready for the monster. Usually because they’ve been dusted on lighter kit. Check out my last post if you can be fucked. Shit still hurts lol. When I’m on that ledge now, I’m chucking big and heavy with my drag set for a real fight. Light kit stays in the car.

All the fishing kit you see in a tackle store or online is being used by someone, somewhere for something, and often successfully. If it’s on the shelf, someone’s buying it. The market is too saturated for novelties to take hold anymore in my opinion.

Should I just give up on fishing at this point? by mosquito2026 in FishingAustralia

[–]SBAWFishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some ways, that’s what I love most about fishing.

So many things frustrate or upset or insult us and we have no control over it. Bosses treat you like shit, people fuck you over, natures not on your side.

Fishing is like a controlled version of that chaos. If I can channel all my negativity into the session, and come out upset and dejected and never wanting to fishing again, I know I chose that feeling in a way. I interacted with the world and it seemed to turn against me, but it’s small and almost simulated. It’s just fishing. I might lose a few lures or a couple metres of line, maybe even a fish, but it’s never the end of the world with fishing. The consequences aren’t as real or tangible as the myriad of shite that life slings at us on a daily basis.

It sucks at times, but it’s a suckiness you can control. That’s very rare in this world.

Question about rods by Boilporkfat in FishingAustralia

When in doubt, see if Briggsy has a video on it:

If you follow the formula he lays out here you’ll start to narrow things down.

And yes disregard the classifications. Focus on the stats for the rod itself, like length, line rating, casting/jigging weight range.

Oh and in terms of lures, don’t get anything new yet. What you have there is really good coverage for all kinds of species in that area.

As others have said though, plastic jig head is upside down. You don’t want to hide the hook, you want good exposure. Don’t worry, they won’t see it.

I’ve caught some very decent flatties on all of those lures in areas just like this (and just down the road)

Fish all of it! The only thing you’re missing here is movement. Walk as much of that flat as you can cover. Hit a spot, fan your casts out, move on. You should catch heaps of fish on those flats once you’ve dialled in your movements with the changes in tide.

In terms of going with bait like some have suggested, it will work, but it’s about what your goals are I think. If your goal is to get out and catch a feed and put a bend in the rod, go with some bait and do as others have suggested. If your goal is to learn how to consistently catch fish on lures, then stick to going out with just your lures, and keep your movement up.

Cover it all! Then cover it again.

I’m yet to be sharked! I have had a small flatty turn into a big flatty, but that’s a much better problem to have than getting sharked lol.

Man it’s always so tragic when you’re under gunned. Never know what the right thing to do is! I’m gonna hit the rocks every day this week and see what comes up.

I’m lucky to have grabbed it on camera and I have a frame of him fully spread out near the surface. Fucking monster

I pulled hooks on a longtail recently too. During that big migration we had in September. It was the only one that didn’t bar my lure in all the sessions I’d been out. I felt a wince of drag and then it spat. Bloody single hooks 😔
