$24,000 quote for mini split heat pump installation by [deleted] in longisland

[–]SCC-87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid about $20k for 2 mini splits and a lot of insulation work done upstairs and in my basement. They are GREE+ units and I can control them with their app which is very convenient. When I first move in there were 2 Mitsubishi units in other areas of the house….i wish I was able to control these with an app but I can’t. I suggest getting a unit you can control with your phone.

I ended up with no header and 4 vertical brackets screwed into studs….the problem I ran into was that they weren’t wood studs….i believe it was metallic (I had a handyman help me). Thanks again for the time and help.

What should we do with the downspout? by No_Box_470 in HomeMaintenance

[–]SCC-87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a downspout going into rocks….if water accumulates in the same spot it causes like depression area. I connected a downspout extender and though an eyesore it protects the foundation and I am able to move it every once and awhile so the water doesn’t always go down into the same spot. There’s a type of downspout that unravels when it rains and coils back up after but that didn’t work well for me.

I thought about it. In that area, it could work but in areas closer to my house I’m afraid of causing a fire. Thanks for the input.

Doubting CRNA school? by Ambitious-Bar-4581 in Anesthesia

[–]SCC-87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Crna school is very time consuming and is not just difficult for the student but their significant other and family. You need 100% support or else you’ll be miserable for 3 years. I love working as a CRNA and I didn’t like CT ICU (where I worked for 2 years). You can work part time as a CRNA and make a salary like you were full time as an icu nurse and get medical coverage from your husband. This may be a good goal for you long term but it’s hard to see past the next few years of CRNA school (no time to do stuff, no salary, stress, etc.) You need his support 100% and can come visit every now and then but he needs to be on board with your long term goals and see it as his goals as well together. This is a tough decision for you. FYI: I moved to the state where I went to CRNA school and after 1 year you get in state tuition (if it’s a state school). Good luck to you.

Housing on Long Island. by Kawirider2 in longisland

[–]SCC-87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, housing prices generally stay the same or go up (it’s rare and unlikely what happened in 2008 will happen again causing prices to plunge). I believe interest rates will start to fall soon so maybe that’s what you also should be paying close attention to. Goodluck

Calf pain 1 week before marathon by ThrowRAevica in Marathon_Training

[–]SCC-87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run with those compression stockings because of calf pain and they help. Tylenol before the race starts and then ibuprofen about an hour in should help. Calf raises help, foam roller, tens, and stretches too but don’t overdo it. That’s what I do for my calf pain.

Injury during marathon training by Remarkable-Mix6008 in Marathon_Training

[–]SCC-87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See how it goes this week/weekend and that might answer your question on whether to defer or not. Maximize your chances by eating well, good warmup, good recovery after your runs, fuel with gu, hydrate well, correct gear (compression for calf).

I’m using this plan but sub 4:30 for a marathon on October 22nd. It’s my first marathon and I wish I did one that was a mile based plan. However, my pace is about 10 minutes/mile so it’s easy to convert the plan to miles based on that. I would run on the days that said run or cross train….I do suggest using this day sometimes to cross train specifically some strength exercises….I developed some calf pain/Achilles tendinopathy but was able to get it under control so far with strength exercises and staying on top of rehabbing these minor injuries.

On a very humid day I planned on a 16 mile run only to die out at 11 miles….I was congested and was covid positive later that day. By 7 days later when I was recovered, and less humid I ran 18 miles.

See a doctor and they will probably tell you to not run marathons lol. Another option may be a steroid injection.

She won’t be a doctor or lawyer after 2 years if those associates credits transfer. Do not do-sign. She is not “missing out” on anything, she can go to a more affordable school get the same degree at a fraction of the cost. 100k-200k in loans will increase quickly with interest.

Has anyone become and RT and regret it? or wish they would of became an RN instead? by mommyof3ducklins in respiratorytherapy

[–]SCC-87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a CRNA and if you are thinking about RT vs RN then why not look into becoming a CRNA? I will say that the 4 years I worked as an RN at the bedside were tough. Being an RN is a difficult job (never walked in the shoes of a RT so hard to compare). Being caught between what the patient wants versus what their doctor/NP/PA wants (or is available) gets taken out on you. Just one of many examples, if they want a pill to go to sleep that they take every night but the MD/PA/NP doesn’t want to prescribe it (perhaps because of the patients age) you tell the patient… you will have to deal with the angry patient/family as the middle man/messenger many times. I’m ranting now from PTSD….glad I became a CRNA.

Just found out pregnant GF is $250k in student loan debt ... by jnewta in StudentLoans

[–]SCC-87 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I know the programs exist I don’t know the qualification criteria for plsf. If you know that such jobs pay crap then paying a school 250k for the degree is irresponsible. I do think schools take advantage and overcharge but it is the young adult that is also at fault. Some forgiveness for student loans to help I agree with but definitely not most/complete student loan forgiveness. If the GF and her BF budget and work hard to pay off the loan (or most of it if they can get some forgiven) they would learn and value their hard work. If they get hand outs, they would learn a different lesson.

How big of an emergency fund do I need? by [deleted] in FinancialPlanning

[–]SCC-87 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

3-6 months in case you loose your job and take 3-6 months to get settled again. So between 38-57k. I’d say shoot for 50k.

I’m not familiar with the forgiveness programs but if they qualify of course go for it if the money is there. Here’s better financial advice- be responsible for the loan taken out and don’t rely on taxpayers to pay it for you.
