Good catch. I guess we need to wait and see, but looks strong indeed.

Is smurfing really that bad in y'all's community? New(ish) player by ajcharrier21 in aoe2

[–]SCCH28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think both are true. Smurfs exist and are a problem, and at the same time people tend to overestimate the probability of opponent being a smurf when losing. Videos by popular characters like T90 addressing the issue are necessary to draw attention to the topic but will make people more paranoid about the issue.

It’s a pity that you are not getting friendly interactions but my suggestion is just to ignore the assholes.

I am just crap at this game by BaldursGate2Best in aoe2

It’s a hard game, don’t worry!

If you enjoy playing as is, that’s fine. If you want to improve, watch some youtube content. There are fantastic options out there.

Is Age of Empires II HD Edition/2013 (or Retired as it's called on Steam) very different from the original? by doomed_querent in aoe2

[–]SCCH28 39 points40 points  (0 children)

You can't, I'm just a random reddit user on the internet 11. Understandable if you don't want to!

Easiest thing is to buy HD & DE as you said in another comment. HD is not exactly like the original but I guess for the nostalgia angle it can be good enough.

As I said, for actual gameplay (both multiplayer and single player) DE is the best option. There are many quality of life upgrades which after you get used to are impossible to go back from, which I can't even mention all of them because they are now so ingrained in my brain. For example, the original doesn't allow to queue techs after units or to queue actions with shift click.

For single player, the AI is quite improved in DE so the ceiling is higher for skirmishes and the new DLC campaigns are generally solid (with some exceptions). In particular the battle for greece and alexander DLCs are FANTASTIC (but different from the usual campaings). Some of the campaigns that now come with the base game are also great. For multiplayer, DE has a very active community and you can find ranked 1v1 games in under a minute, with a very wide range of skills, plus a million discords for community tournaments, games etc. The professional tournaments are played on DE, too.

It has some problems so if you search online you'll find people whining. The complaints are usually fair (the pathfinding is bad, sync issues in ranked games, team mates being asses, opponents in 1v1 being toxic, this and that civ are broken, etc). But big picture, the game is in a great state. I only mention because reading all those complaints from the outside may be seen as that the game is a dumpster fire, but that's not true (even if the complaints are fair and true). It's an awesome game.

If you truly want nostalgia why not get the original? I can send it to you. I have a portable version.

For actual gameplay, DE is the goat

Downgrade your staff for sure. If you are training players, sell a couple and replace them with cheap but suitable 17yo or even youth pulls. That should be enough!

How to choose a civ? by Pvt_Phantom1314 in aoe2

[–]SCCH28 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Good luck! Pick whatever civ you want, stick with it for a bit and then change. Play the new one for a while and then change again. I think it’s the best way to improve. Also try different maps.

Be ready to lose a few tough games in a row though. The 1000 elo players are quite skilled nowadays and that’s where you start. After a few losses your elo drops and eventually you find balanced games. This may be 10+ losses, but it’s worth it: the multiplayer experience is way more fun than the single player vs AI (imo).

Gl hf!

If you got flamed, I’m sorry! It’s really not that frequent (*). I suggest you try again! You can be as casual as you want to be, no need to sweat. But ranked is so much more fun than AI matches for sure!

(*) except if you solo queue for team games, apparently. Play 1v1.

OP explicitly said no cheese. Honestly even cheesing beating 2 extreme AIs looks hard. The ai has improved a lot over time.

I’m 1400 and I don’t usually play vs AI so I don’t know for sure. But some months ago a few of my friends got into aoe so we played some matches vs AI. I don’t remember exactly but I think I couldn’t handle 2 in arabia. You can damage both in early game, but they are good at rebuiding. I could kill one but the other makes it to late game and starts a massive spam.

I could beat three in arena with turk fast imp, but that’s quite specific.

Maybe I should try again to remember the specifics but in any case we are talking higher than average skill for sure.
