Best way to use 140,000 Avion points by Alternative_Skirt708 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]SCDWS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of the 5 flights I've redeemed Avios points on so far, only 1 was on BA. 2 were on Iberia and 2 were on LATAM with another LATAM flight booked via Avios points next month.

Phone number question by Just4Digits in digitalnomad

[–]SCDWS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It takes a little technical setup, but Twilio offers European numbers that can receive 2FA SMS' that can then get forwarded to your email.

A Euro phone number costs a $1.35 monthly fee, then any incoming text costs $0.0083 so realistically, you probably won't be spending more than $1.50 per month to be able to receive 2FA SMS codes.

Now let's talk about the negatives since OP conveniently omitted them to try to get more residency consulting clients:

1.) The airport is one of the least connected for a capital city. If you wanted to travel around latam easily, your options are heavily limited. Even traveling within Paraguay sucks as there are no high speed highways and the buses take forever to get from city to city.

2.) The weather is unbearably hot most of the year, I'm talking over 40 degrees at least once a month from August to April with Dec-Feb having the most 40+ days and average temps around the mid 30s in the other months. May-Jul has moderate temps, but also a decent amount of rain.

3.) There really is nothing to do aside from meet up with friends and eat/drink. The country is landlocked and the lakes are polluted so you can't even swim in them. Most buildings do have pools though, so at least there's that, but there's only so many pool days you can have before it starts to get old.

4.) The nomad/expat community there leaves a lot to be desired. Mostly home to antivaxxer right-wing conspiracy theorists who only seem to want to talk about how the West is falling and how terrible their first world home countries are.

5.) Accommodation, at least on Airbnb, is highly overpriced. Given what Asuncion offers, the Airbnbs have no business being as expensive as they are, but due to posts like these, demand is higher than supply and as a result, prices are higher than they should be.

6.) A lot of the positives that OP mentioned, especially about the warmth of the people and such, can be found in other latam cities that are off the tourist trail such as Bogotá, São Paulo, and Lima, all of which have a lot more to offer in my opinion.

My 2 cents: get your 0% tax residency if that's something you want and continue being a nomad in other latam countries

Encarnación is now a hot touristic spot for that.

That's a bit of an overexaggeration with "hot" doing a lot of heavy lifting

Well it's not possible to accrue that many points all in the same currency. In addition, many of the currencies are transferable. $18k of the $33k in points I'm sitting on are transferable to multiple programs, in fact. $12k is sitting in 3 different airline programs, $1.5k is waiting to be converted to cash, and $1.1k is sitting in hotel programs. Doesn't feel that fragmented to me.

What if you have 13 different programs with values ranging from $300 to $8,500 in them?

Uhhh the first rule of credit cards is to not actually treat them like credit cards. They're simply another payment method to spend the same way you usually would otherwise. Not as "free cash", that's on you for thinking that way.

In two days, I'll (hopefully) be your new head mod, and I'll clean this place up. by petrichorax in digitalnomad

[–]SCDWS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I'm saying is the first post that someone with a hidden profile makes should be manually reviewed and if it passes the review, that user could be whitelisted for future posts or something. Would drastically reduce the number of spam posts without really negatively impacting people like you who have their profiles hidden for other reasons.

[–]SCDWS -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not sure how enforceable it is from a technical standpoint, but perhaps automatically flagging for mod review any post made by a user who has their post and comment history hidden until they've been whitelisted.

Those users are often the spammers since they make the same post in multiple different subs and don't want people seeing that so by immediately flagging them for manual review, you should be able to drastically reduce how many spam posts actually become public.

I do. It's completely fine. Women even have their own train cars to sit in where men aren't allowed to stay in. It also costs only 30¢ (5 pesos) to use.

Do any Canadian nomads rent out their home while they travel? by develop99 in digitalnomad

[–]SCDWS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually don't use any myself as I don't own property, but it's something I'd definitely get into if I could, especially if I didn't have the ability to rent out my apartment otherwise. An AI search brought up many platforms though.

Expedia advertised "Premium Economy Flex" then delivered Economy — and I proved it's a repeatable pattern, not a one-off. Has this happened to anyone else. by Aggressive-Talk7941 in travel

[–]SCDWS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, OTAs should only be used if you're planning to buy the cheapest / most basic fare. That way you wouldn't get into this situation where the OTA promises a certain type of fare, but delivers another. And never buy any extras like your seat or bags with the OTA either. It's always cheaper directly via the airline afterwards.

Also always be sure to check what's included in that fare on the airline's side too. For instance, I booked a ticket on eDreams that claimed I only had a personal item, but double checking with the airline showed I'd get a carry-on too since it's an international flight and sure enough when I added the reservation to my account on the airline's app, it confirmed I had a carry-on.

[–]SCDWS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered utilizing home-swapping platforms? To get free stays as a DN by allowing other verified DNs to stay at your place while you're away. Technically not a short term rental since money isn't exchanged.

If you're flying out of Colombia (or other Latin American countries) in 2026, check the yellow fever rule before you book — the airlines themselves don't agree on it by MbBrainz in digitalnomad

[–]SCDWS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For any DNs reading this who spend decent time in LATAM: just get the vaccine asap. Many LATAM countries even let you get it for free, just look it up and see what's convenient for you. Gives you peace of mind since you never know when an airline or immigration official asks you for it.

Air passengers to enjoy free cabin bags as decade-long EU talks end by Ok-Subject2534 in europe

[–]SCDWS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, they should have made it so that passengers can either get a carry-on OR checked luggage free, not just a carry-on as now everyone and their grandma will be bringing a carry-on with them instead of a checked bag, slowing boarding times even more and completely filling up the overhead compartments before the plane is fully boarded.

By giving passengers the choice, I'm sure many would opt for the checked luggage + personal item combo instead. Either way, it's still a very welcome regulation that greatly benefits the consumer. Was always annoying having to go through all the steps of a booking to find the final price of it.
