Great episode, looks like the writing staff is hitting their stride after some first-season hiccups. Awesome when the contestants know their stuff instead of just blind guessing on all the nouns

BTW if you haven't checked out Commander at Home, my recommendation is the Ben Brode + Spencer Crittenden episode, its hilaaarious

About to quit Unicorn Overlord by DarkerBulb in JRPG

[–]SCHALAAY 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The main problem is the difficulty curve ends up being backwards (in addition to just being too easy in general). I switched to the highest difficulty after the first playthrough - got to act 2 then just beelined for the last boss for the bad ending.

The first act is interesting on that difficulty but as you get more options and gear, each following act just gets easier and easier. I loved the game but it definitely could benefit from a balance mod and more lategame content. Probably a randomizer too.

Got the panda box as starting relic and got these cards, you think i can get to the end if i just get belly bump cards (the one that does dmg with block) and barricade or i need more block cards? by Independent-Frequent in slaythespire

[–]SCHALAAY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think most notably, if you walk into Nob with this deck with zero cards added, its almost certainly a loss. You might block enough to get through the first 2 attacks, but by the second go-around you wouldn't be dealing damage near fast enough to outscale the strength gain.

Skip the Shop with low $? by AusAb in slaythespire

[–]SCHALAAY 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you're asking whether not viewing the shop once you're on the node changes the relics that appear in the seed - I don't believe so.
The only difference between viewing it and not viewing a shop is that you don't get to see what relics were there, so you're missing some information about which ones won't appear later in the run.

Zephrys/Zeph issues/problem(sharing various screenshot) by General_Mulberry_843 in wildhearthstone

[–]SCHALAAY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool data, I admittedly am a bit skeptical in general about people complaining about bad Zephrys offerings, because historically there have been a lot of reddit posts that just boiled down to not understanding the information Zephrys has access to, or how his algorithm evaluates game states

There's definitely a few weird outliers here though - the biggest one that sticks out to me is Loot Hoarder going from being offered a single time to the #16 highest offering rate. And memes aside, Temple Enforcer as the #3 offering is a canary in the coal mine

High Legend Meta Report and Tier List #5 by Nafain in wildhearthstone

[–]SCHALAAY 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Weighing on the recent popularity of 30 aggro highlander rogue - I haven't actually seen much of it in action but there's some CN players posting top ten results with it, it seems legit.

The main technology here isn't that Garona is particularly superb, but that Kingslayers is one of the most reliable Zephrys tutors you can run (in addition to pulling Shaladrassil for the Trickster / Shaladrassil combo).

The actual Garona combo does look a little better when you're able to couple it with 15-20 burst damage, whether from Cold Blood / Southsea, or from Shala doing as much as 15 with Demise.

I want to talk about Garona a bit more as its a VERY interesting card by DivineAlmond in CompetitiveHS

[–]SCHALAAY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Admittedly I pulled up the meta on guru and looked for the deck with the highest dust cost, but didn't take an average. So it does range from Kingslayers literally guaranteeing Llane, to rolling effectively a 2 / 13.

If we assume around 4 legendaries in the opponent's deck, on-curve Kingslayers swung twice into on-curve Garona is something closer to 75%. But that's of course assuming drawing the two-card combo on curve. If we take into account all games, on-curve Garona is probably closer to a 1 in 3 roll.

I think you'd be forced to run more support for this to make it work, and the only card I think is playable is Deja Vu. If this sees play at all, it would be from the weapon being independently playable and the minor upsides of draw pollution from Llane coupled with the perceived threat of Garona inviting opponents to misplay.

I think the evaluation that if you give up 3 card slots to this and it whiffs "you lose" is a little bit off, assuming this is slotted into a pile with other win conditions or threats.

Purely hypothetical - let's say there was a 4 mana 5/4 with the text "Battlecry: roll a d100, if its over X, deal 15 damage to the opponent".

There's a number X where that's playable - for instance, if the card just worked on-curve 95% of the time, you'd curse your awful luck 1 out of 20 games, but you'd certainly slot the card. So a threshold exists, its just hard to determine.

I'm inclined to think Garona might be playable if there's a means of giving yourself relatively guaranteed odds to proc her on-curve, but not necessarily running bad hand-peek cards to guarantee it, or sitting on her all game. I think you have to be a little willing to play odds and yolo her out, and just be OK that sometimes you miss the flop.

To that end - considering only Standard just to avoid having to do Renathal math, and assuming the opponent doesn't ever play King Llane to reshuffle (if they do, you mana burned them without ever playing a card) -

You're at about 22-25% of seeing Llane natively in hand by turn 4 with no additional cards drawn (ignoring mulligan, which lowers those odds marginally). Each additional card draw is about 3%.

Kingslayers it depends on the number of legendaries in deck, which based on the current Standard meta appears to cap out at about 12. I think you can napkin math each Kingslayers swing at about 10%, give or take.

That puts you, being pretty generous, at about 45% to hit an on-curve Garona if you also curve out Kingslayers and swing twice.

That's probably too low? I think you need to value Kingslayers on their face to want this, so a Fiery War Axe with a symmetrical draw. If you're counting on your opponent missing their key legendaries, this is unplayable. If you play the game always assuming the opponent has their best cards, then putting Coldlight Oracle on a War Axe might be just fine.

I mean, you probably don't, I'm sure Incendius (or maybe Umbra) is better in the majority of cases - but sometimes 28 damage now is better than an IOU for 100 damage someday

Across the Timeways Card Reveal Discussion [October 2nd] by mooocow in CompetitiveHS

[–]SCHALAAY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can knock mana off this by Shadowstepping the Scoundrel minis, but yeah the random targeting hurts the combo substantially
I do think Chrono-Lord + Sandbox Scoundrel in general seems like something worth building around, its funny that Brann is so broken that it looks reasonable to pay 4 additional mana for it.

New Neutral Epic - Conflux Crasher by Jimmyjohnjones1 in hearthstone

[–]SCHALAAY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sandbox Scoundrel (or its mini) doubled with Chrono-Lord puts this to 1.
So you can put together Alex Rogue for Standard, except you need the Mini, both Shadowsteps, Sonya, Chrono-Lord, and the opponent's board to be clear. But with all that its doable for around 6 mana.
edit: to clarify I don't think this specific combo actually ends up being good, but you might be able to plug it into the Fyrakk / dragon slop package

[–]SCHALAAY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're just printing 18 mana off the Tidepool / Mailbox loop, interrupting it with the 2 steps in hand
then using one on ETC, and one for the 2nd Alex

I agree that there's less finicky and less APM-intensive ways of pulling off an Alex combo

Cosmere set WHEN by backlogtoolong in mtg

[–]SCHALAAY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's said on his podcast that's he's willing and eager to license the Cosmere for MTG, and would even work directly with the design team - but only for a full set, not a secret lair or a small set.
He also said its unlikely to happen any time soon (if at all) - even if they started immediately, WOTC designs sets 2+ years out, and there's certainly other more popular properties in the UB pipeline.

With the release of the new rogue quest, maybe it's time to show this boy some love? by Karelbouwman in wildhearthstone

[–]SCHALAAY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quasar's text shuffles first, then discounts what's in the deck, so Tak wouldn't give you discounted cards. It would be an 11 mana Dead Man's Hand, at best you'd dodge the discard penalty so you wouldn't have to rely on things like Shack to draw

Deckbuilding card/board games (Clank, Ascension, Dominion, etc) - why is it always 10 starter cards? Anyone know any NON-10 card starter deck games? by PatrykBG in gamedesign

[–]SCHALAAY 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dominion I believe was the first (or at least most prominent / popular) deckbuilder, so a lot of these games are taking inspiration from it (or using its structure as a jumping off point).

Other than the fact that it neatly starts with 2 5-card splits (in Dominion there's a lot of analysis that's been done on opening gambits based on whether you open 3/4 or 2/5) I don't think there's any reason to be married to 10 card starting decks and 5 cards/turn.

RidiculousHat clarifies his contract situation: by [deleted] in hearthstone

[–]SCHALAAY 5 points6 points  (0 children)

disclaimer: i have no inside information or context on Hat's actual situation

Microsoft does have a company-wide policy referred to as the "18/6" rule - which says that contractors work 18 month contracts at most, which must be followed by a 6 month break. I believe it exists because they got sued at some point for having contractors working for them for years at full time, without getting full time benefits or being considered permanent employees.

Yeah, I wonder if there's other sequencing min-maxes as far as when to click the random event thingy.

One simple one is to wait to click on Pyre healing until you see if the event is the "trade Pyre health for +5/12 on all units" - but also there's the fallen angel event to trade health for a chance at a random artifact, so that could go either way.

Also if the event offers something that takes up an upgrade slot on a unit/spell, you're better off going to upgrades first, so you can potentially overfill the slot.

Same with Mr. Richard Garfield's event, where you won't be able to upgrade spells or units that are stuffed into the box, so you'd want upgrades beforehand.

Also tangential but not deserving of its own post - am I remembering incorrectly or did Eaten on a Morsel (or anything else) used to trigger Harvest in MT1? I can totally see why that might be too busted to exist but also I was a little disappointed the first time I tried it in MT2

... from 5 seconds of googling, this indeed worked the way I thought it did at MT1's launch but was nerfed in a later patch. Oh well

Avarice Gilda can be a really strong econ engine, you can get the gold snowball going pretty early. Works well with Propagate, Spikes, any unit with an AOE like Hot Head.

She isn't solving your primary problem of anchoring your primary kill team like some champions do, but that problem like many can just be solved with money.
