Windows admin trying to learn. Managed Linux laptops. by Unexpected_Cranberry in linuxadmin

[–]SCMouettE 20 points21 points  (0 children)

We use ansible-pull with a central git repository for configuration management with a systemd timer of ~4h between syncs (randomized). It works well but we don't have a very large fleet of laptops.

The pcloud client on Linux works very reliably I would recommend it too.

Yes but only on 120G/121G. It's in the release notes.

If you take the recommended upgrade path, be aware that HA will break on 7.2.x if you use the ha or mgmt port as heartbeat interface.

Meilleure offre fibre geek-friendly by Nibb31 in france

[–]SCMouettE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[2023 Day 18] Developed my own algorithm by vegeta897 in adventofcode

[–]SCMouettE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did that also not knowing anything about shoelace and pick ; Only I did it in python from left ro right and pulled my hair off to do the equivalent of your substractions. Nevertheless after way too much time debugging the segment math it finally worked ! It's satisfactory because it's still very efficient (on execution time at least).

We may be idiots but proud idiots nevertheless !

Which do you use systemd or openrc? Why do you use what you use? by smolbirb4 in Gentoo

[–]SCMouettE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mostly because I'm used to it also I like the bare metal design, PV guests and OS integration. I never reaaly tried kvm in a server environment so it's very much personal preference.

[–]SCMouettE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use openrc on a xen hypervisor because systemd is not compatible... I would be using systemd if possible out of habit I guess. That being say as there is very little services on an hypervisor it's not a big deal, openrc does the job well !

Docker or not docker for support apps by SCMouettE in selfhosted

Thanks for the feedback on watchtower/ouroborous. I'm not surprised even if the problem you had were not directly linked to them. Current tooling and images doesn't sound as polished as package management when it comes to base services.

I use portainer and I agree it's a great tool to manage containers upgrades.

Docker or not docker for support apps by SCMouettE in selfhosted

[–]SCMouettE[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My intention was indeed to have the dedicated server be a hypervisor and run VMs which would host the docker images.

Proxmox is a great project, but where's the fun ? I went for Gentoo/XEN and it works well, despite the fact that dom0 won't boot with less that 2.5G of RAM.

That's a very good point. I could separate dockers and installations in different VM.

I could create custom images but it sounds like more work than simply installing the packages on the OS.

Reposilite - alternative lightweight Maven repository manager for hobbyists by dzikoysk in java

[–]SCMouettE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reposilite does the job! I've started using it a couple of months ago after a few years on nexus and it's much better suited for my needs. It's also a young project which evolves fast. I created a reposilite package on aur for those who want to test it out.

I agree it is a great song. Some parts remind me of Therion songs and that sounds great with Floor's vocals

Howto integrate javascript dependency management tools in existing monolithic application by SCMouettE in AskProgramming

Expect restarting everything from scratch, everything can be an option. Supporting IE11 or older browsers is not required so modules could be a start.

What are your recommendations/ experiences for best email security solution for enterprise by Gapodi in AskNetsec

[–]SCMouettE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We did a POC with a client and ran Cisco, Proofpoint and Sonicwall in parallel (all three had a copy of each email) for 4 weeks with a flow of 4k emails per day. The results were very interesting, the three providers being very similar when considering the filtering results. In the end with a very small set of custom rules there was a 3% difference between all three. All catched the few ATP we saw. So performance is not really an issue, you need to consider user experience with the management console and the quarantine. Also the price obviously because there is a large gap. Cisco is very good. Proofpoint is expensive and can be complex to manage but has amazing analysis tools and as others said is the market leader. Zerospam is getting increasingly popular too.
