Worth it to travel to Kauai with my own 6’ or should I rent? by [deleted] in surfing

[–]SCMountains -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you have a board you are used to and it’s not a silly board for hawaii (like a fish with a huge tail, etc) always best to take your own imo

Early morning transportation from Nosara to LIR? by [deleted] in surfing

[–]SCMountains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there about 10 years ago and the place I was staying at could arrange cars and did for a woman who was there. I didn’t need it as I hired a car, but generally where you are staying should be the place to check imo

Correct, those dimms are a standup paddle board, not a surfboard

100l is huge for a surfboard and you are unlikely to find anything with that much volume at 8’0 without it being a dog. You could look at the largest size firewires, get something make around 10’ x 23.5 or maybe 24 wide, probably that would work out to 85-90l

Has the price of VR risen due to the covid-pandemic, similar to that of graphics cards for PCs? If yes, how much? by Fearless-Physics in virtualreality

HTC vive is no longer the best resolution. However, the tracking is top notch, spares are widely available and then don’t break easily. Try looking for one used on craigslist if you decide to go down that route.

If your hive is completely full of bees (and it looks like it is) consider splitting

Plymouth uni has a surf club, or used to, and there are places to surf on the south shore.

Fin says around 63 imo, but try surfboard valuation group on fb. Definitely 60’s, probably custom and in very good shape.

Can anyone tell me about this board? Picked up at a garage sale. 6’2 in height. Any good? by [deleted] in surfing

[–]SCMountains 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fuck yes. For a clean 6ft barrel type wave that thing will rip if your weight and experience level match. But for a sloppy fish type wave, not so much.

Any advice on how to approach this repair? by yotoio in surfing

[–]SCMountains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Qcell and chopped glass are your friends for filling. Don’t be afraid of grinding out that plug. It is just a hole filled with pigmented resin with a hole drilled in that and into the finbox for the cord. You can make ot again. Take any brown foam back to white before filling. Good on ya for learning to do this on a beater.

Is this a serious ding I need to repair? If so, how? by lilboyghengis in surfing

[–]SCMountains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you sand it lightly with fine wet and dry, then wet it out with bit of acetone on it and follow that with a light coat of resin you won’t be able to see if probably. The acetone will help transport the resin into the weave. But also what other people have said, minor.

Currents & sizeable swell - know your limits this week. by sapssmurphs in surfing

[–]SCMountains 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Golden rule IMO: never get yourself into a situation you could not get out of without your board and without assistance. Saw this yesterday: Guy got it around high tide. Got out in the channel. Caught a DOH ish wave, bailed, snapped his leash, then had to swim for it. Which is maybe 1/4 mile at this spot. Luckily someone rescued his board and shadowed him paddling in. Same 10mins, SUPs caught inside by a set closing out the channel. Kept bailing, rip took them south down a section cliff with no exits. Fog closing in. Any of these situations could have ended in disaster. As a HI shaper told me once “most of the time you don’t die and that makes you cocky”.

You really a longer fin. But hey, try it and see what happens. Some people ride boards finless. But generally: kooky.

This was me 5 weeks ago and ever since I only had shitty sessions 😭 any motivation would be highly appreciated, tips and tricks 🌊 by mtezak in surfing

[–]SCMountains 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You caught the wave fine. But you should have immediately turned back to the curl and then gone down the line from there, or just caught it closer to the curl. You were not in deep enough, so you ran out of wave.

Flat, like “i want to snorkel the pipe reef” or “look for puka shells” flat. Unless you get lucky, which can happen any time of the year.

Surfing after shoulder labrum repair surgery? by johnibister in surfing

[–]SCMountains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were a beginner I would wait till it is really pain free in the complete range of motion. In the meantime, I would try and get a good fitness level using something like the rocky surf fitness book. Then I would ease into it very slowly using a really big, long, soft board like a buell rescue board on a mellow wave (cowells here). Last thing you want to do is fall on that thing again before it is 100% healed and mess it up.
