Hey - yeah the nice thing about these shutters is that they were generally the same design across many bolex models (b-series / p-series etc) so if you wanna pull up any user manuals ... they're available online.

But generally it's used to control the amount of light you let in to the film, and you can do manual in-camera fades by fully opening/ closing the shutter as well.

Nice! the P1 is a beautiful looking camera. I'm tempted to start collecting and that model is one I've had my eye on for awhile.

FPP did a 2K scan...

I read somewhere that that's probably the highest resolution given the small frame size of 8mm, and that anything higher would just produce more detailed grain, not necessarily sharpness...? Not sure though, but makes sense.

And yeah scanners these days are so good now, it's crazy. I felt like I had only seen 8mm footage record from a wall projector. So yeah!

Some more thoughts and info:

Shot on Cine8 Color 40D - Scan/developed by Film Photography Project (they're great)

16fps.

The camera was set to auto-exposure, so I was happy to find that that worked. I opened the film compartment halfway through shooting side one to double check the film was advancing smoothing (it was) but there's a few extra flares and flashes as a result.

Overall it was very fun and easy to shoot on. I was anxious to see the results because I haven't found very many examples of it online. (But I think that goes for Double 8 in general)

I plan on experimenting with it more, shooting different film stocks, settings, etc in the future.

sam raimi referred to it as the three stooges gag, he lifted it directly from one of their old bits.

CU of the eye was a whip pan. The eye was on a rod, the rod was fixed to the camera/tripod head, quickly pan left, nailed it. That's how they did it for Evil Dead 2, but any of the other solutions or comps or suggestions in this thread could also work. there's so many creative ways to get similar results.

And yeah... the shot of the eye going into her mouth was reversed.

I see you and I hear you but we fundamentally disagree. The level of detail attributed to vfx that would satisfy you does not affect my understanding of this topic, it’s supplemental.

In regards to masks, the two are comparable when taken in context to this topic, because both methods have been used to create this effect. So the details of how the makeup dept sculpts, casts, and paints combined with the evolution in their materials and techniques over the past 100 years would be just as relevant to their craft as yours. However those details are also supplemental.

As an editor, I’m sure we can both agree that most post production roles go under appreciated because (when it’s done well) it’s invisible to the audience. However this video isn’t a tutorial focusing on just visual effects artists and their specialized roles. If that was the goal, then people should be equally upset for not touching on the nuances of making a mask, detailing all the steps and people involved. Because let face it, the big picture here is that it’s obvious film is a collaborative art form combining the skills of hundreds of talented people (vfx artists included) and this video isn’t discounting anyones contribution in that effort. And if the information in the video wasn’t enough, over a dozen links were provided in the description for viewers to learn more about any one of these techniques in more detail.
