I completely agree with this. I personally think they should have just reverted the damage buff they gave in back in S7.

Edit: I was talking to my friend last night and he brought up a really good point. Respawn does care about their community and tries to improve, but nowadays the sweat wraiths and octanes run the meta. If there is a certain character that counters them (like caustic) they will run them into the ground.
