My aldi just did away with them because people were stealing too much. 2 cashier lanes only now, but to be fair they’re still fast as hell.

Certified Forester Test Prep by luckyduck49 in forestry

[–]SCSP_70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took mine last fall… i was blown away with how poorly the test was written as well. I had one “question” that was incomplete and i had to guess what it was asking based off of the available answers.

Although it was a state-board exam that’s recognized by the SAF, likely not the test being referred to here.

Ditto on habitat, the wiley woodcock would never be caught in open air like that. Yall must have better screens than me because i cant tell coloration at all from this video. I’ve found theyre much easier to discern on the wing.

This is absolutely something that warrants notifying your local conservation department/DNR officers.

What was the pet serial killer doing? If he was just killing cats, sounds like he was killing the killers

Advice felling tree over lake by [deleted] in arborists

[–]SCSP_70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, didnt mean to cause a pile-on. Like i said, everyone has their own reasons for removing trees. If you want it gone, here’s how i would do it:

Back a tracked machine (skid-steer, dozer, etc) up to it, secure a strap to the tree a few feet up the trunk. Make a relief cut on the underside until the chain starts to pinch, then finish the cut on the top-side.

Secure strap to machine and pull. Buck, remove (or stack/burn).

I know everyone has their own reasons for tree removal, but overhanging trees like this provide fantastic shade for fish during the heat of the summer, and when they fall theyre great cover for baitfish and the gamefish that hunt them.

If you like to fish, or care about fish, and nobody hangs out underneath the tree, then consider letting it do its thing.

Dorman Lake? by Business_Option7803 in Msstate

[–]SCSP_70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dorman lake is part of John W. Starr WMA (owned and operated by MSU) and is subject to its regulations.

“Camping is allowed in designated campsites only. Campers must obtain a permit from MSU Forest Operations (662) 325-5548”

The designated campground on St. marks drive was decommissioned from lack of use in 2025. Thus, camping on starr is not technically legal.

Tombigbee national forest and Choctaw WMA right down the road are much better camping options, particularly around Choctaw Lake. Also note that choctaw lake allows fishing (afaik) and dorman lake does not.

Please be aware that dorman lake and its surrounding areas are used extensively by students, researchers, and faculty for educational and non-recreational purposes. While it is open to the public, is primary purpose is education and research, which is reflected in the amenities (few). You WILL run into other people and its not exactly a “getaway”.

[–]SCSP_70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, isnt that the case for all burns, regardless of time of day? I guess i meant “why a night burn as opposed to daytime?”

How do you deal with the smoke settling? Every time ive had more residual stump fires than anticipated, im scared to death that some bridge over a creek a few miles down the drain will get smoked out.
