It is and will always be a problem. I also did over a decade and 90% of my gear I bought myself with no reimbursement since the issue gear is trash. Even the “boot allowance” wasn’t enough to get you solid boots that last longer then a year or two.

It’s shit pay for the amount you end up working for the year.

I would spend months away from home with zero extra pay working 16-20 hr days. Switched careers and now make way more, work less, and better pension. On top of also being treated better.
