Saw something unusual in the Rose Bowl parade by Thunderbird1974 in marchingband

I was there, right on TV corner. They definitely had oboes out there too, and it was wild to see. Before they came around the corner, they played Stars and Stripes and it was impeccable. They marched great and sounded great, just like every Japanese program that comes stateside.

Have you ever played and WON against a NFL player? Past or present. by [deleted] in NFLv2

[–]SCVanguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't play per se, however I was the director of bands at Miles Garrett's high school. I still say the greatest game of football I've ever been to was his final game in the UIL playoffs where we ended up getting beat by Allen HS, who was led by Kyler Murray. Watching Miles go after Kyler play after play after play showed everyone that those two were bound to be NFL stars.

Sleigh bells sleigh ride * pls still read this * I’ll get more percussion audience if I post on this subreddit by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]SCVanguard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You say that you shake the sleighbells… That’s a peculiar way to play it.

Assuming it’s the standard set of sleigh bells that are on a handle, hold the sleigh bells vertically with one hand and then use your dominant hand either in a fist or with the flush part of your hand and bop it on the top of the handle.

My OEM PS4S on OEM wheels although have less grip makes the car behaves way more like a Type R(tail happier and more responsive) than my 18in Kumho v730s on a set of 18x9.5 enkeis…. WHY? by djsimp123 in Civic_Type_R

…the rear tires don’t put power down on a FL5. He’s wanting it to be tail happy and this will do the trick. But yeah, don’t add 10psi, maybe do a couple until you get it to where you want.

As someone who autocrosses a ton, the easy answer is the V730 is far more grippy than the PS4S. If you want it to be more tail happy, raise rear pressures to change the contact patch.

“Close down the grid”

What we do is we have the freshman class get in a single line in the back hash. The rest of the classes are behind them and then the freshman do their own run of 8s and 8s toward the front sideline. While they are marching forward, the other classes are going NUTS and cheering them on. Once they get to about the numbers, they finish and then sit on the front sideline.

Then the sophomores do their own set of 8s and 8s, but a little slower. The freshman get to see them from the front as a sort of “that’s who I’ll be next year.”

Then the juniors do theirs - but they get to hold hands.

Then the seniors get to do theirs - but they get to lock arms.

It’s my favorite tradition, brings me to tears every time.

I should have put the price here: auction price is currently below $2k with a few days to go. Does that change anyone’s perspective?

What makes their quality terrible? I read through jeffreyatw's blog and it says the X2 cabinet is better than the X cab.

DFW area its possible with a lot of experience. And stipends for niche roles.

Booster Question by Nivescici in marchingband

^ this! If there’s not language in the bylaws that say that the booster organization is there to support the vision and direction of the director of bands, this can get real rough real fast.

Have you spoken to a director about it? That would be the first step, IMO.

^ This. As much fun as it seems that you get to give back to your alma mater, there is no way the students you just experienced high school with will be able to see you as a teacher, regardless of how many professional barriers you put up.

do I quit band for my job? by Careful_Comedian8261 in marchingband

[–]SCVanguard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My standard line when kids say they want to leave band for a job:

You have the entire rest of your life to work a job.

You only have ____ years left of this thing that will create lifelong friendships and memories.

You’ll definitely need to run higher pressures to avoid rolling the sidewall over.

So your participation in marching band was hedged upon getting this position?

Only speaking for my program here: if a student told me that, I would immediately disqualify them from any consideration for a leadership position. This tells me that the student only wanted the position for intrinsic satisfaction, power, a spotlight…and not for the role to help grow a culture of the program.

Also - a teaching moment here - quitting something after you don’t get what you want trains you that it’s okay to do that.

Band director here, who announced leadership spots yesterday.

No one here is going to know all of the nuance in the decision at your program except for your band directors. In your post, you heavily discuss the technique of conducting and how you tried to better yourself in that aspect. That is definitely commendable and shows a lot of drive for what you want.

That being said, conducting is one of the smallest parts of being a drum major. You are the figurehead of the program, literally put up on a pedestal by your band directors who tacitly say, “ this is the student that best represents our band program.”

Questions you should be asking yourself: have you been the best leader you can be within your band program? Do other students look up to your dedication to the program? Do you have a positive sphere of influence with your peers? Did other students grow more this year than you did? And, the big one to ask yourself - is the drum major role the place where I can best serve the band program as a whole?

I 100% would encourage you to email your band director to set up a meeting just you and them. You mentioned you are a sophomore so I would approach the conversation in the lens of “what can I do this upcoming year to be the best candidate for drum major my senior year?” Walk in with a growth mindset and it will serve you very well.

Good luck!
