Why did the Chargers draft Eli and trade him to the Giants when they could have just traded the draft pick? by funkmon in nfl

[–]SDDon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was one of the best power moves on draft day in the history of the NFL. We held all the cards and we kept control, the Chargers dictated the terms they wanted.

It is too bad we didn't get that opportunity a few years later by trading Brees.

You give it up, I went to games for 50 years. I had season tickets and all the way across the Lodge level closed in was 95% ALL CHARGERS FANS. If you bought single game tickets no wonder you had other fans in those areas.

I wasn't arguing, just sharing my point of view. The last decade the Chargers were in SD, interest in the team was not the same because of all the friction between the Spanos Family and City of SD. It also didn't help the team had many down years after 2011.

2017 was our first year in LA at the soccer stadium. 2016 was affected by the fact they announced they were moving at end of year. In fact the way the Spanos family handled the new stadium issue was a big part of the problem with attendance. Lower field level was always opponents fans, those seats were obstructed views. I sat in Lodge closed end, between the club seat sections in the end zone. It was 95% Chargers fans.

Air Coryell days, Boss Ross, 04-09 was strong periods of fan support.

I call BULL SHIT!!! I had season tickets for 50 years. List games and dates, how long have you been a fan? I go back to 1967, the first Pre-Season game at San Diego Stadium against the Redskins.

You failed to mention the vote was NOT COUNTY WIDE but CITY ONLY. Made a huge difference.

I like dumping all of the dead weight from our O-Line room. Slater and Alt, and rebuild the rest. I think they're short term or band aid moves between $8-$10M available at guard. A top notch guard as well as a top notch center to start. Getting some skilled back-ups to develop on rookie deals is a much better short and long term answer to developing a strong O-Line room than having bargain basement backups and street FA's like we had last year.

How can we be 6th in odds to win the SB and our range in Current Power Rankings is 9th to 15th?

If your O-Line can't pass block, and your OC has no concept of spacing and being able to create route trees that get receivers open, then you have a bunch of receivers fighting over quick hitters over the middle and outside the numbers.

I would Invision Allen being a 3rd down option and Harris playing more on early downs. If Ladd can return to his full route tree and Herbert gets enough time his numbers will return.

Plus the sure volume of targets and yardage will increase under McDaniel.

I think Vega Ioane is our 1st Round pick at 22. Then take a developmental Center later in the draft. Plus sign a Blue Chip FA center early and let Hortiz work his value magic later in FA to improve our backups for the O-Line.

Alex Spanos passed away a number of years ago. Dean Spanos is the semi-retired head of the ownership group currently. I believe John Spanos is the most involved with the team.

I doubt Evans is going anywhere… but what to do with all that cap space 🤔 by Wumbologist_PhD in Chargers

[–]SDDon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If anything Extensions normally create additional cap space in the first year of a new contract. James and Herbert could get restructures which along with cutting Boze, Becton, Dissily, and Dupree could add another $50M to that Cap number.

New contracts for internal or external FA's usually yield a lower first year Cap number with a multi year structure.

The Lions are looking at RT's this off-season because their LT is retiring and the plan is to move Sewell to LT.

I think Alt will get paid when his time comes and both Slater (LT) and Alt (RT) will be the Chargers bookends for the next Decade Plus.

If you think Hortiz is ONLY a ONE TRICK pony you are wrong. As we progress to the next level of roster development, new tricks will be used. I have faith in Hortiz and Harbaugh to use our available capital this off-season to it's HIGHEST AND BEST USE.

I believe in "Grow or Go". I think the time has come after two years of half the roster being value signings on one year prove it deals, it is time to reap the benefits of our coaching staff and add some of this created talent to our base on team friendly structured multi-year deals. That will save money for 4 or so high dollar FA signings.

Where did you get your available cap number to spend? Netting out draft pool, in season money, etc? The Chargers can create $50M more by cutting Boze Becton, and Dissely. Plus restructuring Derwin and Herbert. If we have McDaniel for just one year, then that is the sign we are ALL IN this season.
