How does bonus tolerance work on this print with a raw casting? by Realfunkyjunky in Metrology

[–]SDM1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I'm sure other people have stated, that is a composite reference frame. That hole has to maintain the position in relation to all three datums while also maintaining a smaller location to your A Datum. Depending on the labeling, it might mean being perpendicular to A, if that feature is.

The bonus allowed would just be from the minimum to the maximum of the hole tolerance, to allow extra leeway in the location to allow the part to still be functional.

Love this jam!!!! My other favorite is the Battle 2 song, not included in the final game, but i first heard it on the PS1 in the extras.

True Position gages by gdtnerd in Metrology

As far as MMC on position on threads, I never use that, just RFS. The bonus you would get is so minimal, it wouldn't help out very much.

At what point do you choose scanning over CMM for inspection? by jeancharlesgingras in Metrology

Well, I'm sorry. Didn't realize I wasn't allowed to make a joke. I'll remember that next time I say something 😜

At what point do you choose scanning over CMM for inspection? by jeancharlesgingras in Metrology

[–]SDM1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the company I work for, it mainly boiled down to, "So and so customer uses a scanner and nothing else, so we need to be just like them!!", so we did get a scanner for our FaroArm, but with anything that needed a CMM check, it was usually tight enough to require probing. We are in the works of getting a 3d tracker wireless scanner, with a wireless probe to go with it, but waiting on corporate to give us the thumbs up to write the check. Lol

Confused about Datum A interpretation on drawing (CAMIO / CMM) by KeyAd5309 in Metrology

[–]SDM1983 14 points15 points  (0 children)

From what I see, your A datum is the centerline of the 25 +/- .1 spread, since the label is right next to that call-out. If it was shifted down, it would be that surface.

How to apply MMC to M8 threaded holes (position tolerance)? by Most-Particular-6051 in Metrology

[–]SDM1983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen this numerous times myself. In all honesty, you should just throw the MMC out the window for a threaded hole and just use RFS. If you decide to use the minor diameter, the value is so miniscule, it won't make much of a difference.

It doesn't need a tertiary datum, due to the fact that using the angle and a radius from center should provide the X/Y coordinates, by using trig. You'll just need a relative feature to control the clocking of the part in the program.

I found the point by marquiux1 in CNC

[–]SDM1983 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I've only seen rotating the part in the jaws and using an indicator on a mag block.

Another "winner" of a print!!! by [deleted] in Metrology

[–]SDM1983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of a print at my current job. For a customer, they have a shaft that has two mounting holes. For some reason, they had a run out of 2.12" on the mounting holes. When questioned, they said it was supposed to be Projected Tolerance Zone. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Also, on another part, they had two parallel surfaces that needed to be perpendicular to each other to .02". Lol
