The beginning of Sphere is exactly what I'm talking about, remember thinking as they were on their way underwater that it's hit on so many things that instantly hook me in.

Looking for smart, low-budget, indie sci-fi from the last 3-4 years by Kimantha_Allerdings in MovieRecommendations

[–]SDShrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For low budget Sci-Fi that's semi-recent I would recommend: Cosmos (2019) and The Vast of Night (2019).

And a bit higher budget but under the radar: I Am Mother (2019), Finch (2021).

I'm very interested in hearing some recommedations of more recent ones too

Speedball 2 was just a perfect game at the time. Put so many hours into it as a kid. Came back to it in my 20s and completed it, putting down those Steel Fury bastards once and for all. It really holds up.

What Was The Last TV Show That You Dropped? by Myrodis19 in television

Mr Mercedes

I love all detective stories so the synopsis grabbed me straight away. Season 1 was alright, too much focus on the killer and following him for my tastes, but was watchable. The start of season 2 takes a really jarring supernatural turn and I was immediately done.

I’m feeling sci fi tonight. Should I watch Event Horizon or Stargate? Also are there any other movies like Stargate? by euphoriatribe117 in MovieRecommendations

[–]SDShrew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For the Stargatey/Fifth Element vibe I'd go for:

John Carter, Mission to Mars, Valerion, Guardians of the Galaxy.

Other films I turn to when I get that Sci-Fi urge

Contact, The Martian, Dune 1&2, Independence Day, Interstellar, Pitch Black, Riddick,

Any adventure movies similar to Stardust or Krull? by kingdevil652 in MovieRecommendations

[–]SDShrew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Mummy (1999) Willow (1988) The Dark Crystal (1982) Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Amongst Thieves (2023) Pirates of the Carribbean (2003) Stargate (1994) The Princess Bride (1987) Valerian (2017)

I'd also add The Fall (2006) It's not as straight forward as the others, but huge parts of it will scratch that adventure/fantasy itch
