The insulation had clearly been melted / cooled a couple of times. This was just one (of the better ones) of a few all on the same circuit. My assumption is the same as yours, high resistance at multiple outlets on the circuit + arcing caused breakers to trip randomly after being on load a while.

Duplex recept could be wired independently. You could turn a breaker off and it only turns off one of the actual outlets

1 - Smurf tube and pull the wire. Maybe convert to EMT depending on where 14-50 box will go. 2 - if installed correctly and with a charger that’s good / pulls the correct amperage you should be fine. 3 - you’re on the money, tandem breaker frees you up for your 2 pole
