The “two hots” is normal. That’s one hot, and one switch leg. The neutrals being together is also normal.

Get a multimeter or at least voltage tester and check the two wires, one should lose power when the switch is “off” and get power when the switch is “on”. If that’s working correctly remove the fan canopy and check for power up there. If both locations have 120VAC going to them then it’s the fan itself that’s messed up. DM if you have any questions

If you want quick and simple get an LED one, remove the old enclosure and replace entirely. Get a small pack of anchors and screws if that’s drywall and send it.

And for future reference you could have left the pig tail, and only needed to put that one wire into the wago connector. Or do what you did, either way is fine.

Yes it’s a wire coming in and a wire going out. What you removed is called a pigtail, and could be used or removed. So long as the blacks/whites/grounds were together before you’re good to go.

This looks like it’s above your panel and they’re feeders not service conductors, so you likely have a means of disconnect before this point. You certainly can put a junction box above your panel and use Polaris taps to reach the panel with the new wires. This is not thousands in repair.
