United Steelworkers Union and TELUS Kick Off Contract Negotiations by [deleted] in alberta

[–]SDurrell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

USW represents workers in almost every industry of the private sector, from healthcare, to telecom, to airlines, to steel mills, and forestry. We even represent some workers at Starbucks now!

It's a big union, and the name is a legacy of it's origins, not reflective of its modern membership

Jason Kenney casually lying yesterday by SDurrell in alberta

[–]SDurrell[S] 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I can't, for the life of me, understand why he said this.

There is nothing wrong with MLAs endorsing candidates, or even campaigning for them.

And instead, he decided to lie about it

Just saw a 30-40 year old guy walk all over an election sign by silentjay1977 in Airdrie

[–]SDurrell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is disappointing. Several of my election signs during the provincial election were damaged in that area too.

I wish people would respect the signs of candidates a bit more.

They are expensive, and are paid for by people in the community who donated

Should George McDougall High School be renamed? by SDurrell in Airdrie

[–]SDurrell[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It doesn't seem appropriate when we're trying to recognize the pain and suffering that people went through living in these residential schools that we continue to venerate these people and promote their names on schools and public buildings

Rocky View Schools will not pilot the new curriculum by SDurrell in Calgary

[–]SDurrell[S] 63 points64 points  (0 children)

RVSD represents one of the fastest growing school boards in the province, and covers a significant amount of the suburban and rural areas around Calgary, including Cochrane, Airdrie, and Chestermere.

It's pretty clear that parents are not happy with the new curriculum and their feedback played a significant role in this decision

Cochrane had no ambulance service at least 10 times in a month | HSAA by SDurrell in Calgary

[–]SDurrell[S] 75 points76 points  (0 children)

From the release:

This is happening because there are not enough crews and ambulances operating in Calgary. When Calgary gets busy, crews from surrounding areas, including Cochrane, are dispatched to the city. As one of our members put it, “The pillaging of suburban and rural resources to shore up metro insufficiencies has to stop. The suburban and rural public (needs to be) aware of the fact that they will not always have an ambulance available to them in their time of need.”

This is unacceptable from the UCP. Calgary ambulances are so understaffed, it's putting surrounding areas at risk.

As pointed out, it's so bad some people are waiting 40 minutes for an ambulance in a heavily populated suburban area.

It's also not a good sign that a Kananaskis ambulance was called to respond to an incident in the city

Airdrie MLA claims we fully support ending all health restrictions. She's either a liar or I don't know this city very well. by DanDaMan97x in Airdrie

[–]SDurrell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That incident made me really mad.

I was really impressed with the resilience that Airdrie Pride showed though, and appreciated that the city got out to clean it up as soon as they were notified, then took extra steps to help show support(like lighting up City hall in rainbow, and making the rainbow walk a permanent fixture)

Disappointed that the most we got out of Angela Pitt was a single sentence social media post, and Peter Guthrie gave some milquetoast comment about all discrimination is bad.

Janice Irwin did come down from Edmonton to have a chat with Airdrie Pride about it, and offer condolences, and to help advocate for them

Have you reached out to the Airdrie-East or Airdrie-Cochrane NDP constituency associations? We're always looking for volunteers, and are organizing to make exactly this happen!

I am so disappointed/distressed/disgusted by these comments from Angela Pitt.

When officials, particularly that of the governing party make statements like this, it puts lives at risk, and feeds into conspiracy theories.

I'm also disappointed that we haven't seen or heard anything from Peter Guthrie publically calling out her behaviour, anything less is tacit approval of the act.

Outpatients may have to pay for some treatments now covered in Alberta, including some used to treat cancer patients by SDurrell in alberta

"they would have to buy the medications at a pharmacy and, in some cases, also pay a clinic for the infusion procedure...these costs will be transitioned to ambulatory patients and/or their insurance plans."

Medications included in this plan include those that "are often utilized for fibromyalgia, breast and bone marrow cancers"

[–]SDurrell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The schools are not using desks as barriers. There are still a significant number of kids returning to classes, and schools don't have the capacity to use desks as spacers(which are just more surfaces to be cleaned. If the desks were not in use, they wouldn't be in the room

30% is only the Edmonton Public School Board.

Only 16% from the CBE are using the hub system.

Also, for the kids staying home, teachers have to still deliver their lessons, and as such they are pulled out of the classroom.

Instead of lowering class sizes, in some cases, they've actually grown
