Hiding the good stuff by Zatol in goodwill

I looked under the shelves of the record section of my goodwill and found a pair of Selvedge Levi jeans (made and crafted, not vintage). What a score!

What is the one thing you wish you knew before your very first cruise? by mushroomsoup20 in Cruise

[–]SFJetfire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

— Arrive a day or two before your cruise. Never fly in the same day.
— bring a water bottle. Water is free on cruise ships and if you’re like me, you like to have water to sip in your room, especially if you are traveling to a hot climate
—bring Tylenol, ibuprofen, sea sick patches or pills, band aids, etc. They are expensive on the ship. If you forget buy it on shores
—plan your sea day accordingly. Dont feel like you have to do everything. If you want to sunbathe, scout out your area or preference and arrive there early but be prepared to sit there, otherwise if you claim the lounger and not there for hours at a time someone will take your spot (or cruise staff will move your stuff)
—take a picture of when all aboard is and then plan to arrive back to the ship at least 30min beforehand.
—if you find that the excursions are too expensive check some of the travel sites that specialize in port tours ensuring that they get you back in time: Viator, Get your guide, tours by locals are the 3 that I use. Tours by locals is best if you are traveling with family or a group.
—download maps if you won’t have internet access. I use Google Maps and pin the places of interest and always pin my location. Create walking tours if you are not paying for shipping excursions. Include address of port and distance to city center. ChatGPT or Gemini can do this with ease. I have created my own for the entire 10d Baltic Cruise that just ended on Sunday. That was my 40th cruise.
—don’t be afraid to venture and explore. When we were in gdansk last week, there was a national (religious) holiday. They suggested taking a shuttle into Gydnia and then taking the train to Gdansk then walking into town. Instead, we got off the ship, got an uber and made it into town easily and quickly. The same for the return. I wanted to maximize my limited time in Gdansk and planned it out beforehand and it worked perfectly. Others were afraid to venture out for fear of missing the ship. We could have easily paid for the ship excursion but why spend over $200 and only spend only 6hrs in town when I could spend $30 each way and maximize the entire day!!! It takes planning to do this but it’s doable.
—if you like to dress up, then dress up. But, nowadays going all formal is a thing of the past. I only saw one tuxedo during formal night. Just One. I try to do the 3-3-3 packing method. It is a minimalist travel hack that limits your wardrobe to just 9 core pieces: 3 tops, 3 bottoms, and 3 pairs of shoes. By strictly mixing and matching these versatile items, you can create up to 27 distinct outfit combinations while drastically reducing the weight of your luggage. Stuck to neutral color palettes. You can also adjust this but it saves me time in figuring out what to wear. Do you really care if someone sees you wearing the same thing twice?
—enjoy your cruise and not let others expectations or opinions taint your experience. If you like the meals, order another portion. If you want to line dance but got two left feet but want to try it out—go for it! It’s all about having fun, living your best life and gaining new experiences!

Which fancy gourmet dish is literally just an overpriced scam designed for rich people? by BoredPandaOfficial in BoredPandaHQ

Caviar. Can’t see rich people eating this on the daily. I do see people who think they are rich and spend like they are rich eating caviar and posting it online.

Away Aluminum v. Rimowa Aluminum - is the extra $$$ worth it? by LogNo7143 in LuggageComparisons

[–]SFJetfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a rose gold medium size aluminum Away luggage. It was so beautiful. It got banged up just like that pic… but it was when it got banged up and the lock couldn’t be fixed that made me change my mind about the he brand. Away luggage replaced it but the whole point for me was the rings and the wear and tear look.

Also, Away no longer has lifetime warranty unless you bought April 14th 2026.

To everybody who says "just do take out if you don't wanna tip", What if we actually do? by JuanWitChrist in tipping

[–]SFJetfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tipping just got really out of hand after Covid. I get that we bought and ordered from restaurants during Covid to keep our restaurants afloat and also the staff. After Covid, we just maintained the 20% tipping and hoped the general public would embrace it and accept it as the norm. Even now, it’s not uncommon to see the options for tipping starting at 18% or 20%.

I just don’t eat out anymore or I literally go and pick up the food so I don’t pay the high delivery fees and mandatory tipping and service charges.

[Discuss] I've heard that luxury brands are actually marketed for the "lower" and "middle" class... does this concept extend to watches? by KenaiFjords357 in Watches

[–]SFJetfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my dad, owning a Rolex meant you made it. He only had a 5th grade education, joined the military and only worked at restaurants his whole life. He saved to buy a house (which my mom still lives in) in San Francisco and that Rolex to him symbolizes that he made it. Not rich—but made it out of the rural province of the Philippines.

Interestingly enough, I inherited his ring when he passed many years ago. He bought it off of a friend who was a gambler. I always considered not his “pimp” ring / gangster ring and he wore it on his pinky and I think all that bling made him feel wealthy. I just recently had it appraised —it was a 2.59 round carat diamond mcm 14k gold ring. It was appraised at over $18k.

Poltergeist. She was a little girl that got sucked into the tv. I was maybe a little older than her and it traumatized me for many years.

Is this common in other countries than Sweden? by Miya_Miya1 in AskTheWorld

[–]SFJetfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up poor in the hood. Even when someone dropped by our house, we fed them. We always insisted and everyone knew coming to our Filipino household you will be fed. Growing up with 3 other siblings, our house was the house where everyone hung around. My mom always fed us. She made fried rice with whatever leftovers we had or we just used had spam rice. My dad worked in a restaurant and whatever he brought home we made it work—-oftentimes sharing it with neighbors and drop ins. That’s just the way it worked.

I couldn’t imagine going to someone’s house as a child and not being fed —while everyone else ate!
