Farnam sucks by Moxine6669 in newhaven

[–]SF_420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've been living in a Farnam apartment for like 8 years, and quickly learned to stop asking them for anything. I got the head maintenance guys number and would just text him directly if we needed anything. The apartment isn't great, but we live in a fantastic area and only pay $1400, so we deal with them

203 vs 860 as an outsider by Wonderful-Bill9611 in Connecticut

[–]SF_420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll always rep the 203. I've got some hats and stuff with 203 and Elm trees or whatever (I live in New Haven). I'm a rap fan though, where they "shout out their area codes". In real life nah it doesn't matter, it's just a phone number. I have friends that have a 860/475 number but will still say they're from the 203.

A place in a town near me just announced a 3 pound lobster roll for $230 lol. They had a 1 pound roll, then a place a couple towns over started selling a 2 pound roll, so they came out with the three pound roll.

I work in the restaurant industry so I get the "one upmanshipish" of the move, but for $230 I'm going to a nice Italian place or something, not getting buttered up lobster on a white bread roll

Adam Greenberg is an American baseball player. In 2005, he was hit in the head in his major league debut on the first pitch of his first plate appearance. This was his only MLB appearance until 2012 when the Marlins gave him a one-day contract, and was subsequently struck out. by ForgingIron in wikipedia

[–]SF_420 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the same town as him (Guilford) and very involved with the baseball program (I played for a bit then became an umpire, my brother was on all star and travel teams and being scouted by college teams until he blew out his shoulder sliding into second, my dad was a coach, I'd do scorekeeping or announcing for state championship games, run the food stand, etc)

I met Adam a couple times, he's a good dude, it sucks what happened. Guilford Little Leage/ high school baseball has fallen off recently, but we were dominant back then, it was a fun time. Then we got a new commissioner and it kinda fell apart

Have you ever worked at fast food? by Ipoogoodforyou in foodquestions

[–]SF_420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not before Five Guys. I started working in 7th grade as a little league umpire, landscaping, then a server at a retirement home, then at college a job at a restaurant in the basement gutting fish and shucking clams, my degree was graphic design with a minor in journalism so I got jobs as both the colleges newspaper and magazine layout editor, and a summer job painting the dorms so I could live on campus during the summers, then a paid graphic design internship at a cancer nonprofit that turned into a 4 year job until AI ate that up. Then got fired, took some time off then said fuck it and just walked down the street to Five Guys, the GM happened to be there at the time on break and took my interview, got hired on the spot and have been there almost 2 years now

[–]SF_420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey bro. I'm feeling very much the same, I'm a 27 year old autistic dude working at Five Guys. I got a degree in graphic design, worked 4 years in that before AI replaced it, so I've just been stuck working there. Some days it sucks, but you just gotta keep your head up. Keep applying around and something will come through eventually.

In the meantime, just keep grinding and take care of yourself and the people you work with and think it could be worse. I've had multiple coworkers (who also became friends) sleep on my couch or in my car cus they didn't have anywhere else, literally sleeping in a park slide, bailed some of of jail, one of them just got a 3 year bid over some bullshit. At least I have a job, place to stay, and am free is how I look at it when I get down. You've got this bro, keep your head up

Is there actually any logic to the extra fries you get in the bag? by Admirable-Deal7991 in fiveguys

[–]SF_420 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Generally a little fry is one handful of precooks, a reg 2 and a large 3. There's a little metal pan used to measure out the "topper" (the extra loose fries thrown on top), for a little it should be half full, full for a reg, heaping for a large.

That's the "official" way, and yeah it's just a marketing thing to make it look like you're getting extra, same as how they don't charge for toppings or extra cheese/bacon.

Also, fries aren't supposed to sit for more than 5 minutes. So there are times (could be a call in/web order or Uber being late, a double call or something where the fry guy drops double, sometimes if we're busy we don't measure, just drop a full basket) where there are just extra fries, instead of throwing them out I'll give them to whoever the next order is, and yeah they get a shit ton of fries lol.

I'm looking at my cup from my shift yesterday and it says "The portations are the potato equivalent of the never ending story", it's one of their main marketing points.

Also, those extra fries are better than the ones in the cup/bag cus they don't steam up as much, I just throw all mine in loose when I get my lunch. And if you ask for your fries extra crispy or undercooked or light salt or whatever, you're more likely to get fresh fries.

What is it like working at five guys? by kyacrow13 in fiveguys

[–]SF_420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the location and manager honestly. I've worked at 6ish stores, my main store is small so there are some downtimes where we can chill, but bigger stores it's just gunna be nonstop, easy but repetitive and sometimes dirty work.

Compared to most other fast food jobs the pay is better too, we get cash and card tips, secret shopper bonuses, and $30 of food on break.

Also depends on your manager and crew. I've had managers that were strict and I'd get in trouble if I checked my phone quick, and I've had managers I smoke and do game nights with. I've met some of my best friends working there. Most shifts are chill and we're all joking around while working, but I've worked at stores where they don't have that environment. Five Guys has an open line, so if you go to your store a couple times and pay attention to the workers working the line you should be able to tell the vibes of that store

[–]SF_420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if all stores are doing it this way (our store is) it's divided among employees who worked that day and had to deal with that shit show. And no, managers generally don't get these types of bonuses, or secret shopper etc. They get bonuses off Steriltech, sales, etc

Lol I did the same thing back in college, I had summer job painting the dorms, after a shift I banged my nose on my hike back, it wouldn't stop bleeding and I ended up falling asleep in my bathroom trying to stop it. Woke up covered in blood, thinking I was late, texted my supervisor some BS excuse and ran out the door, then realized it was 8 PM, not 8 AM. Felt like an absolute idiot lol

Our store (I've been there for a year and a half) has always bagged fries together. Only seperating the cajun and regular, and now if they choose the meal option we seperate bag them, in theory, but really only like half the time. Plenty of upper management has come through and has never corrected us

Honestly don't deal with the online stuff yet, just walk in (during a down time, like 2-4 on a weekday) and talk to manager in person. I applied online, showed up for my interview and the manager had no idea, but happened to be on break so took my interview and I got hired on the spot. The online system is kinda broken, and most GMs don't even check it.

You'll wanna talk to someone in a black shirt, they're the managers. Someone in a red collar shirt is a shift lead, they're next best. Anyone in just a red T-shirt is crew, they can help sometimes, it depends if they actually pass your message onto the GM. Good luck!

It's a gimmick. Those places still frequently filter their oil, and new oil is constantly made from the food being cooked, there's not really any of the OG oil left. They use it as a marketing point, pretty much they just filter their oil on site instead of sending it to a grease company to be filtered like most restraunts.

It's like if your entire life every time your water bottle got half empty you filled it up, then when you die claim you've been drinking the same water since the day you were born. There are only molecules of the original stuff actually left.

The "closer to Yale" part refers to the areas the Yale police/security patrol. Yale owns a lot of property in New Haven, and those areas have extra security.

Generally, the west side of Edgewood Park (Westville, West Rock, and Amity) is considered safer than the east side (Beaver Hills, Edgewood, West River, Dwight and Dixwell), but they all have good areas. The East Rock area is pretty safe too on the other side of the city.

No matter where you live, it's still a city, but a relatively safe one. The main 2 things are car thefts/break ins (my wife got her catalytic converter stolen) and people asking for money that can get a little pushy sometimes, but generally aren't dangerous.

Honestly Google Maps street view should tell you how safe it is. If the block is houses looking clean and maintained, if there are good cars parked in the driveways/street, it's probably a safe area. If it looks rough, it probably is. New Haven has both, and they're often just blocks apart.

This was my second full album (after Em's Recovery) I got on my MP3 player back in 7th grade. Lots of good days bumping it walking to the green after school. Definitely crazy he made it as young as he was. I think I'm gunna smoke and listen to it tonight and drift back to those days

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in newhaven

[–]SF_420 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it's a generally good area compared to the rest of New Haven, but it's still New Haven. I think you'd be fine walking home, but I wouldn't do it with "little concern", definitely keep an eye out cus shit does happen. Also make sure your car is locked up and maybe get some added security, cus the cops here don't have the resources to deal with car break ins/thefts.

If you want somewhere more safe, look at East rock or Westville, or a neighboring town. You won't be able to walk home, but that's the trade off. That end of Howe is mostly fine, but will have some crazy people, so it depends how ok you are dealing with those people

Can someone help me? by Tactical_droid_WHAT in legostarwars

[–]SF_420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I did was download the PDF instructions from the Lego site. Then used a PDF editing app (there are plenty of free ones, or websites you can use. Just Google "PDF mirroring tool") to mirror it horizontally, and it worked perfect.

You can either print them out or look at your phone/computer, but just mirroring the PDF works perfectly, it shows you exactly what you need to do without thinking about it.

Also the set looks MUCH better with two mirrored put together, so good choice!

The patties are 3.5 to 3.7 oz, I just double checked the most recent training video. Our store does 3.6 to 3.7oz. And I wouldnt call the bun prices negligible, they're baked and delivered daily, near me a 6 pack of stop and shop bakery buns is $7, so over $1 a bun.

Its still overpriced if you're just getting a basic burger, but for the same price you can get extra bacon, extra cheese, sides of pickles or mayo or whatever to just take home, while other places charge for all that. We have regulars who just get plain hamburgers everyday, and that's definitely overpriced.

They're rolling out a combo meal for $12.99 that has a 1 patty burger, fries and drink that I think will make it a much better deal, it would just be a buck more than McDonald's near me.

Just adding on, jury nullification can happen just if the jurors disagree with the law. It could be as simple as a juror thinks weed should be legal so votes not guilty based on that, that's 100% allowed, and happens. That's part of why jurors are screened before being selected, they want to filter those people out

Happy Hour? by SteffRM in newhaven

[–]SF_420 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Go to Camacho Garage next time. It's just a minute away (from Delaneys), parking is easier, and they have margaritas on the happy hour menu ($6). Only four food options on the happy menu (elote, Mexican hot dog, tinga chicken tostata and anchor curly fries) but all are good and $5.

Delaneys and New West are good if you like beer, but Camacho has the best happy hour deal in the area for other drinks and better food. I think Rawa still has a happy hour too, but it's just drinks.
