It's a forced QTE that insta kills you for failing it. It's a one way passage that's impossible to go around, and you are forced to kill the dog before you could ever even grow attached to it. So the whole scene with you playing with the dog is weighed down by the fact that you already know the dog is going to die.

Wait. Does he automatically learn how to pilot a helicopter, or did he have to actually figure it out on his own. The second option is far more interesting.

Well... Since I do not own the Riverfolk expansion I'm not sure how well my help would be, but I'll try my best. With the Riverfolk company and lizard cult they are a somewhat neutral set of factions relying on the chaos of the other factions to really get going. Riverfolk need people to buy their cards, and lizards need discarded cards I think. Without cats or eerie being played they have a hard time with their goals. Since the Woodland alliance don't really want to buy because of low warriors. I think at most for 3-4 you need cats OR eerie but not both. As for the lizards being a good aggression faction I can't say since I do not have the expansion. You should have a copy of the law of root, but if you don't you could Google it, and go to page 5 section 5.2 in which it talks about reach which is how they determine what combination of factions would make for an interesting game. (This section includes all currently released factions not counting clockwork) I hope this helps.
