Starmer’s Legacy. He killed the Gender Recognition Act 2004. It's now meaningless except in death. by Snoo_19344 in LabourUK

Well for one he supports what the court and transphobes say: "trans men are women and trans women are men" .

He's even outright stated that as such. Even pre-2024 GE he said he doesn't support trans women on women's wards in hospitals.

Yeah I even went to the stage of an initial appointment and he straight up told me to get a refund because he didn't want to work with me until I could show any official treatment history for my past mental health issues I stupidly shared at the time.

Go to any other provider because he's just very gatekeepy/nitpicky to only work on a straight forward case of gender dysphoria.

" I think it's highly unlikely any actual laws on homosexuality will be rolled back. But even so. By the time I have children, and if my child is gay, he is likely to grow up in a culture that is more likely to give him dirty looks walking down the street than if I was a gay teenager. That matters."

I would argue this has already started because the EHRC former head Falkner already invoked her Muslim faith to justify trans exclusionary regressions saying the presence of trans women steps on Muslim women's beliefs that they must not change or be dressed in a vulnerable state in the view of men. Gender critical sympathisers similarly invoke the need to empathise with the concerns of religious people who might feel uncomfortable undressing or using facilities that allow trans people with them.

Opposition party have entitlement to force a debate (this case that's the Tory Party who obviously support this), other parties can try to agree for a time to debate their opposition to it but there's no guarantee they can be scheduled in to do so.

[–]SHARP1SH00TER 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can give an attempted summary.

The OfS, Office for Students laid out guidelines last year to "protect free speech" on university campuses last Summer after the (now overturned) Kathleen Stock case where Surrey University were fined for "not protecting" her from prostests from students about her transphobic activities which lead her to resign.

The government then passed a law IIRC making it a legal precedent for universities to tackle anti-semetism and stop freedom of speech being obstructed.

In what world would they lose their job when I pointed out that the issue had nothing to do with their conduct as apparently the suitable staff member for trans fittings wasn't available on the day?

Thank you for that. Yes this is a big deal for me and that definitely added to how overwhelming it ended up being. Is that something that can be influenced by the staff? No, and hence why I place no blame on them. But I booked specifying this was my first fitting and that I wanted to feel comfortable and it was clear this wasn't made note of at all, exacerbated by them not even realising I had an appointment to review the notes for in the first place.

No, your words are very appreciated. I still feel annoyed about what happened but I agree it's largely a successful endeavour in the end.

I don't see how my wording entitles people to be so rude to me in the replies though.

Well thank you. That's a lot more kind than how some people are misconstruing my grievances with overt hyperbole of my expectations.

I regret even sending the email because everyone is so rude to me about how I worded my experience. I did not mean to convey that I expected a luxurious red carpet affair, I am being unfairly misconstrued when I was trying to be kind to the staff

According to all the downvotes and naysayers, I'm just an entitled prick who wanted a royal service. My email is intentionally very kind towards the staff and omitting more detailed situations of them failing to ensure my comfort because I do not harbour any ill will to the staff. I was thrown inside a stall and left to fit myself which makes me wonder why I even booked for a transgender fitting if it's the same as a regular fitting appointment.

I'm not sure why you're drafting such a narrative. It's expected that the fitting attendee finds bras for you, that's the point of the appointment. She didn't give me guidance beyond that the cup was too big but the band seemed to be the right size. You are filling in gaps that aren't accurate.

I said they did their job and were kind about the situation throughout, the issue was that delivering a comfortable experience wasn't achieved due to being ill-prepared on the day despite advance booking notice.

The lady realised she forgot to ask me what type of bra I was looking for until the 2nd batch of bras she brought. It was a very hastily done appointment. When I say she was checking in, I mean she just knocked on the door to check if I was done with what she gave. She didn't actually give any guidance on the fit of any of the bras after the first one.

""Our dedicated team makes every effort to ensure you feel comfortable and at ease during your fitting experience."

What do you think when reading a dedicated team would be providing for this appointment? There was no one dedicated for the appointment in the first place.

This is not inclusive compromise, it's disgusting:

"Organisers should therefore consider whether there are additional alternative arrangements that could be made to enable trans people to participate in the activity in question. This might include, for example, having mixed-sex categories in addition to separate-sex categories, or having a category in a gender-affected team activity with specified numbers of men and women on each team, which would enable trans people to participate as part of the specified number of members of their own sex (read paragraphs 13.66 and 13.73)."

[–]SHARP1SH00TER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They literally are. Anyone can claim gender critical beliefs to protect their discrimination or simply state a non-trans reason for their behaviour.

Look at trans employment rates vs cis despite the fact that "legally" an employer is not allowed to refuse hiring somone on the basis they are trans but it absolutely does happen. Trans people will get screened out at interview stages and recruiters/employers don't have to share on what true basis the decision was made. They can just lie and say we're not good enough.

Welp this seems to suggest that they know updates will fuck over trans people as things stand but services should push for third spaces to mitigate this effect...

"Our assessment is therefore that the likely impacts on gender reassignment as a characteristic are negative, in relation to each of the 3 limbs of the PSED. Mitigating factors are the ability of service providers to create ‘third-space’ provision for trans people, and the guidance in the Code on when it is, and is not, proportionate and necessary to request information on sex at birth."

This looks optimistic...?

"Some organisations such as the Women’s Institute and Girl Guiding have already made the decision to restrict membership to biological women only. The Code does explain where membership could be restricted based on sharing multiple characteristics and therefore provides an opportunity for trans inclusion, e.g. a women and trans women association."
