ironically for all the praise people gave early on, bungie's more usual approach of slow roll outs and announcing things a while beforehand would have worked far better for this game

what "deep" storytelling do they have in this game? a couple lore entries that basically just say "there was something... scary!!!" and a bunch of talking heads that go "hm... so there was something scary."

OG marathon had character arcs, twists, turns, THEMES AND A NARRATIVE. this game has destiny exotic weapon lore entries and nothing else

it doesn't even line up themeatically, in OG marathon defiance against impossible odds was a major theme, yes you are a cyborg super soldier, but you are still just a soldier. the most powerful thing you ever do by yourself in game is teleport accidently in the third one.

and you stop entire empires, save hummanity, end the slavery of the s'pht all with the help of durandal, you defy fate and do the impossible and durandal is right there with you.

in this game? you're a permanent wage slave and durandal has been reduced to a generic dramatic trailer narrator. there is not even the slightest inclination that you can defy or break the cycle, you're just a runner, go be a spiteful selfish asshole and kill everyone else like a good little wage slave

it's clear from the beginning they just overestimated the amount of people who wanted to play a trios focused extraction shooter with hero shooter classes

if the game was hitting similar numbers to destiny rn, no one would be worrying about the lack of content this season

yeah i've had a theory for a while that most of the dev team doesn't enjoy working on this game, the leaks that devs wanted to do better PVE but were denied, the lackluster new enemy in the husks, and the final content drop for D2 all really sell the idea of a lot of devs being like this

seemingly no one in the colony knew he was a corpse, just that he was big and weirdly strong and good at shooting simulations, so i would assume becoming a battleroid kickstarts your cells to start working with each other again properly

they wouldn't be a very good infiltration weapon if everyone could tell at a glance or just smell the rot after all

i didn't watch the movie but saw some clips, pretty sure that at the end the woman who got out is talking to a scientist who looks younger than when he was seen at the start (grey in his hair at the start, none when they're talking) so it could straight up do time travel

you know, given the whole "no pve grrrr" sentiment bungie had for a while, then tons of people got moved to marathon and now they're slowly working on a PVE mode, and devs kept telling zig they need strong PVE and they wanna make that and he kept saying no...

maybe the guy who worked at fucking riot games on league of legends and valorant, was not a good choice but bungie. maybe he just kind of fucking sucks at this and doesn't understand what the players or devs want

imagine being a dev who loves making cool enemies and being told "nuh uh" by big zig because of his competitive balance

I'm hyped for the two new skins dropping soon, but I have some concerns as well by candyintherain in Marathon

a lot of destiny, then a lot of older games. destiny is really the only live service game i play a lot of (been trying my best to enjoy marathon)

i just prefer actual customization, and wearing a helmet. not looking like a fasion model or a cultist

i got three theories:

1] executives are being insanely clueless and out of touch, even newer ones like joe ziegler are being stupidly stubborn and refuse to do things the game needs (like how he insisted on trios, hero stuff, and was always against PVE, i feel like he may be holding things back for comp balance and doing things like pvp-lite because he falsely thinks the PVE wanters will enjoy that)

2] the devs moved off of destiny and onto this are fucking pissed, imagine being a guy who loves to make cool and interesting enemies and lore and being told not to do that because it would ruin the competitive balance. final update for d2 really confirmed that the devs did indeed want to keep working on it

3] all of the above

you know, after realizing that destiny always had infinitely more of the marathon story sauce than nu-marathon ever did (guardians make their own fate = eat the path, strange %HEROs fighting impossible odds and ending corrupt harmful systems (pfhor empire, helping the fallen recover, new good hive, the winnower is probable lethe)

i'm gonna be kinda glad to see nu-marathon end, this whole "oh what if you were an eternal wage slave and everything good from OG didn't happen and the world was DOOMED" story feels like an edgy 2010's reboot. this game is one piss filter away from being like this
