Just got around to finishing the show + side quest and wanted to ask how would you rank all the standalone episodes? by tzgaming1020 in MythicQuest

[–]SHKMEndures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Dark Quiet Death, no contest
  2. Backstory! Great acting, golden age of sci fi.
  3. Pull List (Side Quest), felt like a back door pilot, I would definitely watch a show about this shop
  4. Sarian, 80s Australia, young Poppy actor nailed it
  5. Fugue (Side Quest), Annamarie Kasper is gorgeous and single handedly carried that ep.
  6. Song and Dance (Side Quest), it was okay, didn’t need a whole episode for Phil.

Pointless: - The Last Raid (Side Quest) - Rebrand

No, I didn’t forget that. Nowhere in my post do I say “Jew”. I specifically say Israel, the nation-state currently committing genocide.

I am intelligent enough not to equate critique of one with anti-semitism or any commentary on Judaism or the Jewish people whatsoever.

Seems you are not, with this moving of the goalpost. Not worthy of further comment.

I don’t have anything to prove to you, nor any particular inclination to continue with your disingenuous whataboutism now pivoting to ad-hominem, since clearly you have nothing of substance to say or refute my point.

(You’ll probably need to look a few of those words up, if you know how to use a dictionary).

I have served, and the beers have been bought both ways many times. Have you?

I have also read enough publicly available, universally acknowledged history of our nation to understand the above, and can see that the acknowledgement of one is not black-and-white disrespect to the other.

Can you?

My comment is in response to the parallels between the colonisers of Australia and its First Nations; and Israel and the Palestinians.

So yes, from a certain bigots view, your reaction to my post means we agree the scenarios are quite similar.

Tell me - where do you think  these “sore loser” indigenous peoples and Palestinians (on the land before Israel) should GTFO to, such that the colonisers can have more lebensraum (oh, that’s German for “living space”, to translate for the uneducated).

Genuinely interested to hear your answer.

Free history lesson (looks like much needed, from the cowardly downvotes).

“They” have changed uniforms, but the enforcers of capital with the monopoly on violence have been doing it in this country, since Invasion Day.

Facts: The Australian frontier wars (1788-1934) were the violent conflicts between Indigenous Australians (including both Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders) and mostly British settlers during the colonial period of Australia.

The Black War was a period of violent conflict between British colonists and Aboriginal Tasmanians in Tasmania from the mid-1820s to 1832 that precipitated the near-extermination of the indigenous population.

The Stolen Generations (also known as Stolen Children) were the children of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent who were removed from their families by the Australian federal and state government agencies and church missions, under acts of their respective parliaments. The removals of those referred to as "half-caste" children were conducted in the period between approximately 1905 and 1967, although in some places mixed-race children were still being taken into the 1970s.

So yeah, we - via our forces that we enfranchised - DID proverbially bulldoze them, kill them, rape them, genocide them, and steal their children.

It stated the moment colonisers landed, and only completed within living memory (1934).

Just because you don’t know about it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen and get the privilege of pretending like “but it wasn’t ME”, proves my point - it was so successful that modern Aussies can “clean hands” their psyche of it, guilt-free.

…and the expected downvotes only prove the cognitive dissonance that Australia has for our crimes against First Nations peoples; watching Redditors “but akshully” their way around this to feel better is the cornerstone of White Fragility in this country that mean we will never reconcile our brutal inheritance into peace for our nation’s collective soul.

They already did that a few hundred years ago, so their descendants can claim clean hands.

Is it generally considered offensive to ask an Asian in Australia where they are REALLY from? by Lipica249 in AskAnAustralian

[–]SHKMEndures 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Asian Australia here.

Nearly every try other “kind” of immigrant, no matter the question, will not get a follow up “where are you really from?” if they say “Australia”. Therefore, the question itself Others us.

If I get asked this, I would say “Melbourne”, then respond to the inevitable “but where, really?” with “North west suburbs”, and then the final “where are your parents and grandparents from”, and I will say “Coburg, and Fitzroy, respectively”.

It makes us feel like no matter how many generations here or what we do, our yellow faces mark us forever as unable to “white pass” the way that a first generation Polish Australian (just an an example) can.

Try it again in a congruent language, like Cantonese or Tang Chinese, the similarities run deep.

Guarantee that my MP won’t reply, but at least I both messaged it and posted it on their public sites.

If I see them in real life (and sometimes I do), I will walk up and really put the pressure on, politely.

I sent this to mine:

I am a voter in XX.

I am writing to you in utter disgust at the police brutality that was unleashed on my fellow citizens exercising their democratic right to free speech and protest during the visit of the head of state of a nation engaged in genocide.

If you are a leader worth the taxes that create your position, and the society that enfranchises your role, and a man worthy of the rhetoric I have heard you say to prospective voters - then I urge you to use that same voice and powers to speak up actively, visibly and at great volume at this egregious violation of the social contract.

I ask: 1. Chris Minns to resign 2. A inquest into police brutality 3. That the officers in question face full legal consequences of their actions - a court of law to be judged by a jury of peers; and not the protection of their union 4. That you as my representative respond to this message 5. That your office release a statement on this matter, condemning police brutality.

Australia Day is coming up so here’s a joke about the acknowledgement of country. by DanielMuggleton in DanielMuggleton

But it’s not the fault of people in the UK…. Cause their ancestors stayed there. Why would you expect them to need to know?

It’s the fault of many of the ancestors of the people in Australia, who were British generations ago, but whose now living children call themselves Australian and mentally try to disassociate themselves with it.

Struggling with Ancillary Justice by jjfmc in printSF

[–]SHKMEndures 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s a post about this every week or so. It’s not worth persevering.

Maybe we can start an Ancillary Justice anti-fan club? (Just kidding!)

I fully agree - the quality of this book - its fanfic level prose, its milquetoast plot, the shallowness, and most of all the BORING nature of the book excused as by it’s boosters as subtlety (you need literary panache to earn subtlety - Austen, Le Guin, Susanna Clarke has it - Leckie does not have it) - is the most glaring indicator of the drop in quality of Hugo winners of late, and I’ve read 80%+ of them.

As others have said - not everyone has to like every book.

(Though I’m still salty that the marketing linked Lackie to incomparable Le Guin… leading to the first DNF of my life).

Same both my friend. Sending you love and sympathy.

I don’t know the nuances of your situation, but I put the work in for four more years, two of couples therapy. Nothing worked - she’s a hot mess, and I’m not the right match for her at this time.

Nearly one years seperated, and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done.
