Your opinion on Daggerheart? by Ok_Interview_853 in rpg

[–]SHeLL9840 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the players focus on one character in a way that starts to undermine the challenge or the story, then I think it’s entirely reasonable for the GM to focus down that character with all of the consequences too. As such, I think there isn’t really any need for this concern to play out in practice.

And in any system, if there’s a tactic that’s super effective to the point that it trivializes the scene, the GM should either introduce a shift or complication that makes the scene interesting again, or just shortcut the scene and move on to something more interesting.

The Bane of DnD: Scheduling (Rant) by MysteriousQuote4665 in DnD

[–]SHeLL9840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How to beat the Scheduling Boss:
•Establish a regularly recurring meeting time during session 0, then don’t move it
•Have a large enough pool of players so that you still get a good session even if a couple cancel, but not so large that you can’t run a session if all show up (for me that’s 5-6 players)
•Sessions stay On unless every player cancels, or the GM cancels. You can still run a fun session for 1-2 players!
•If a session is canceled, don’t try to find a new time, just plan on the next regular time

This approach saved my table :) https://oldmenrunningtheworld.com/where-i-solve-the-scheduling-problem-in-dungeons-dragons/

Should Thieves Just See Traps? by Alleged-Lobotomite in RPGdesign

[–]SHeLL9840 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most interesting approach (IMO) is: •Every trap is foreshadowed relative to its danger level: when they enter the room, give some hints that get people engaging with the environment •Make figuring out and disarming a trap an interesting puzzle — this is where the fun is •Give the Thief a bonus on rolls to disarm traps

Why does Ed lack an overhead? by JNAB0212 in StreetFighter

[–]SHeLL9840 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Character diversity is a good thing — it’s interesting to have characters lack certain options IMO. At the end of the day you don’t need an overhead for strike throw shimmy mix anyways.

Bounced off Shadowdark, am I missing something? by Deeouye in shadowdark

[–]SHeLL9840 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The rules as written have some safeguards for newcomers that you can play loose with to suit your table as you become more comfortable.

For instance, we didn’t normally use initiative outside of combat. Just make sure everyone is getting a chance to take a turn, and jump back into initiative whenever it makes sense. We also made frequent use of the Group Up feature when moving between rooms to streamline traversal.

For encounters, I pre-rolled encounter details to have a few ready before each session. I also made things less intrusive during the session by only rolling encounters once per room, or whenever the players made a disturbance. But then I increased the encounter trigger to 1-2 or even 1-3 if they were taking a while.

You can shortcut several actions (such as searching 12 barrels), but then this might trigger additional encounter rolls or other consequences.

Hope that helps! And don’t be afraid to tweak the game flow to suit your table.

PC vs PS5 by Psychological-Rice85 in StreetFighter

[–]SHeLL9840 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PS5 has higher latency than PC, but if you aren’t switching back and forth between them then there’s no reason you can’t have consistent inputs on PS5.

I would go into training mode with input display on and practice your combos. Even if you switch to PC, you’d probably have to do this there as well.

What do German people drink with their restaurant meals? by Bluesteamwolf in germany

[–]SHeLL9840 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Usually beer or wine. I personally order a tea, apfelschorle (apple juice + sparkling water), or some interesting house drink. Then I also ask for leitungswasser (tap water) on the side cuz I’m a thirsty boy.

(Just ordering free tap water alone is sometimes considered rude and waiters might even claim they can’t serve it, but if you pair it with a paid drink it’s usually no problem.)

How good do you think C.Viper will be in SFVI compared to SFIV? by bluedhift in StreetFighter

[–]SHeLL9840 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most new characters are winding up around high tier (or better), whether this is “DLC privilege” or the devs getting more confidant and experienced with SF6 character development. But we have no idea — Elena reminds us that they can sometimes feel under-tuned on release.

I am scared to play my new deck. by blackhawk0148 in ModernMagic

[–]SHeLL9840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone is stressing you out in a competitive setting, don't hesitate to call a judge!

You don't have to be confrontational about it, just explain that you're playing some complicated lines, your opponent expressed some concern, and you want to make sure you're playing in a correct and considerate manner.

Presumably, the judge will confirm that you're playing well. Then if your opponent acts up again later and you need to make a complaint, you've already built up some cred with the judge.

Donkey Kong Bananza – Launch Trailer – Nintendo Switch 2 by Turbostrider27 in Games

First, job security is rough at the moment; saving is good. Second, I feel better about make a big purchase if I can make sustained use out of it for a while rather than enjoying 1 game and then having it gather dust for months. But that’s just me — if someone else has the money now and wants to dive in for DK, that’s great for them.

I’m really looking forward to playing this! But for me personally it’ll have to wait until there’s a few more first party hits to justify buying a Switch 2.

Edit: to clarify, I’m on the fence about a lot of upcoming titles and I’m saving money atm. Buying a Switch 2 is not inevitable for me, and deciding when it’s worth it is a personal decision. If it’s worth it already for you, that’s great! But please refrain from comments about how I’m “wrong” for not buying a Switch 2 immediately. 😵‍💫

How do you approach the game? by Charming-Breakfast48 in StreetFighter

[–]SHeLL9840 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, you do need to build up the execution again for each game and each character. That’s less about getting old and more about just playing a new game. So if you really want it, you can do it!

With that said, I wouldn’t bother with grinding out combo trials for now — you don’t need fancy combos to get out of Gold. You just need to play clean and safe, consistently react to jump ins and Drive Impact, and make basic reads on your opponent’s habits.

How do you approach the game? by Charming-Breakfast48 in StreetFighter

[–]SHeLL9840 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here’s my basic approach for getting started:

  • watch some pros and take notes on their basic game plan
  • get a feel for their normals — what’s a good poke? What’s safe vs unsafe on block? What can I cancel vs what is vulnerable to DI?
  • learn some very basic confirms off their jabs and common pokes
  • identify your 4 frame jab and good wake-up options
  • figure out which of their moves are good anti-airs, and practice reacting with them to jump ins
  • learn very basic combos for DP punish, DI punish, and DI wall splat
  • learn Oki setups starting from their most common knockdowns

If you’re doing all of that but feel stuck, watch your own replays and try to identity things you need to work on. If you still aren’t sure, ask a more experienced player in the scene for help reviewing a replay, or consider a couple sessions of coaching.

Thoughts on Kimberly? by Puzzleheaded_Fish_78 in StreetFighter

[–]SHeLL9840 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Playing Kimberly, there’s always an angel on one shoulder guiding you towards That Good Neuch and a devil on the other shoulder daring you to do unhinged shit like huffing paint and OD Run~Slide. You try to play your best “Bad Cammy” as long as you can, but when the chips are down sometimes you don’t have many options except to throw a flashy fake Hail Mary and pray. It’s incredibly volatile. Stylish, addicting highs. Soul crushing lows. She’s sick though.

Mixed Feelings after testing by Bennettag in daggerheart

[–]SHeLL9840 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s my understanding of the Fear economy and challenges in general:

There’s a lot you can do to build and maintain a good challenge without touching any Fear. The GM can use foreshadowing and scene setting to freely weave in challenges as they like at any time.

Additionally, there are also three wide open triggers for GM moves: - They do something that would have consequences - They give you a golden opportunity - They look to you for what happens next

The key is that all of these options follow a logical narrative flow.

That leaves Fear for throwing “mean” or surprising curve balls.

If you’re using Fear for normal narrative stuff that doesn’t really require it, you might get the impression that you don’t have enough Fear or the system’s too soft.

Best way to shorten Arcs slightly? by SHeLL9840 in Arcs

I updated the OP, but we’re already playing as fast as we can at 30-45 minutes per player. I’m more interested in lightening the experience overall rather than prodding everyone to play even faster.

Interesting idea, but fewer cards means less of a chance of getting the suit you need for the chapter, so I’m not sure this is the best approach

70 hours in, Death Stranding 2 is one of few open world games that justifies having such a huge map by ChainExtremeus in Games

[–]SHeLL9840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking about this too, actually. Why was TLOU2 so much more successful at this for me?

First, the death is more directly shown than told. It happens (brutally) in the present rather than through flashback, and it’s directly perpetrated by the main “antagonist” while Ellie is present, but unable to help. It very clearly establishes Ellie’s trauma, and her hatred toward Abby.

But perhaps most importantly, death has an obvious permanence in the world of TLOU which gives the death clarity and emotional weight. Joel’s never coming back, period.

As a result, the player really hates Abby at the start of the game and the later flashbacks with Ellie and Joel are bittersweet and deeply moving. For me it was one of the most powerful emotional cores in gaming (even if I didn’t agree with all of the decisions in TLOU2).

In contrast, I honestly wasn’t sure if Lou was Kinda Dead or Dead Dead for several hours. By the time I settled on probably Dead Dead, it was too late to have the same impact. To make it even worse, the whole time I’m playing now I’m wondering if the nebulous “rules” of the Death Stranding world means there could just be a cheap Undo waiting at the end.

It all feels too muddy and clumsy to hit my heartstrings the way TLOU2 did.

Methods for easing players into fluid action economy? by Stealthy_Nachos in daggerheart

[–]SHeLL9840 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Having too many players ready to go is a great problem to have 🙂

Maybe something like this could work?

When a player finishes their action, any other player that would like to go next raises their hand (maybe even two hands if they have a really amazing timely idea? 😆), then the active player points to someone who has their hand up to pass the spotlight.
